The programme supports pre-revenue and early-stage companies, as well as small SMEs, academics close to spinning out, and social enterprises, to overcome technical challenges through bespoke R&D projects with university academics and access to R&D facilities. Participants receive up to £25,000 of direct R&D support (for internally funded projects), over 25 workshops on topics like medical device regulations and NHS procurement, dedicated support from MBA students, grant application review, mentor introductions, pitch deck development, and a demo day. It also offers access to partner products and services like AWS credits and SeedLegals, free local hot desk access, and student support on short-term project work.

SYIP supports organisations based in South Yorkshire across all sectors (excluding public sector), including charities and social enterprises. It primarily aims to engage 'innovation inactive' businesses to foster innovation. While generally not providing pre-start/pre-trading support, exceptions are made for activities involving innovative product/service development with a clear R&D need and alignment to South Yorkshire strategies. The programme contributes a percentage of project staff/labour costs, ranging from 60% for large companies to 90% for micro-companies and 3rd sector organizations, with 50% for partner facilities/equipment, materials, consumables, workshops, and events. Support counts as a Minimum Financial Assistance (MFA) subsidy. Clients can undertake multiple projects across Programme Partners, but multiple engagements may require Delivery Group approval.
