About MassChallenge

MassChallenge is an accelerator network based in Boston, with offices in Dallas, Jerusalem, Renens and London. It has supported startups since 2009, more than 5,000 of them by its own count, and it runs programmes for founders in complex and regulated markets.

How programmes work

MassChallenge runs several kinds of programme. Traction is for early-stage founders from pre-seed to Series A, and focuses on go-to-market work, strategic exposure and early commercialisation. Challenge programmes are built with corporate and industry partners. They are designed to move a founder's solution from discovery into practice, with the partner helping to co-create, test and scale the solution. The provider describes three outcomes for these programmes: pilots, proofs of concept and commercial outcomes. Breakthrough Bio connects biotech and medtech companies from Israel and Taiwan with US investors, regulators and industry partners.

Some programmes are run with named partners, including Sanofi, Verizon, SMU Cox and the Israel Innovation Authority. The Taiwan cohort of Breakthrough Bio is hosted by MassChallenge in partnership with the Development Center for Biotechnology.

Selection is a competition. Applicants go through one or two rounds of judging. The first round is an online review by a panel of judges. The second is a pitch to judges or partners, held in person or online, for the startups that make it through.

The judges are drawn from the startup community and are trained to identify high-impact startups across industries. They do not sign non-disclosure agreements, so the provider advises founders not to include in an application anything that would harm the company if it were disclosed. Applicants can also ask for feedback: every applicant receives feedback from the judges on the online application.

Who can apply

Eligibility depends on the programme. Early-stage accelerator programmes accept applications from startups from anywhere in the world, with limits on the equity funding and annual revenue a startup has already raised. Breakthrough Bio is open only to biotech and medtech companies headquartered in Israel or Taiwan. Its Israel cohort is open only to companies incorporated and operating in Israel, and its Taiwan cohort only to companies headquartered in Taiwan.

The pages we read do not describe a programme for India-based founders, so check the programme page before applying.

Equity

MassChallenge says its programmes take zero equity from the startups it supports. It does not invest in startups up front. Participating founders and alumni can compete for cash awards and other prizes.

Locations

The US programmes run from Boston, Massachusetts, and Dallas, Texas. Hybrid programmes run from Jerusalem in Israel, Renens in Switzerland and London in the UK. The Switzerland and UK programmes accept applications from founders worldwide, across all industries, with tracks in agtech and food tech, materials and industry, healthtech, AI, autonomy and cybersecurity. Their status on the provider's pages is not consistent, so check the dates before applying.

Scale

The provider's aim is to back founders who take on complex problems, and it describes the network as one that connects startups, experts and partners across industries and continents. It states that none of its programmes take equity from the startups it supports.

By its own count, MassChallenge has supported more than 5,000 startups since 2009 across five challenge areas: healthcare and life sciences, security and resiliency, sustainable food systems, climate, and global financial systems. It reports about 90,000 jobs created by those startups and more than 500 partners worldwide. These are the provider's own figures, not audited totals.

Who runs it

The CEO named on the About page is Cait Brumme. The organisation publishes its tax returns and audited financial statements on its website.
