About Watson Institute
Watson Institute is a US organisation based in Boulder, Colorado, that runs entrepreneurial and leadership fellowships for impact entrepreneurs. It describes itself as powering these fellowships in partnership with corporations and foundations, among them Western Union, the Truist Foundation and the Enlight Foundation. It is not an Indian programme, and founders based in India should read the eligibility notes below before spending time on an application.
How the fellowships work
Watson Institute runs cohort-based fellowships rather than a standing incubator. The programmes it lists are typically 16 weeks long, run largely online, and combine training, mentorship and a peer network. Several are built around a Basecamp, a community event that Fellows organise and host themselves, and a Summit that brings a cohort together at the end. Basecamps and Summits are parts of the fellowships, not separate programmes.
Each fellowship is funded by its partner, and the pages describe them as fully funded for the Fellows, with no programme fee. Watson Institute does not publish a standing open call. Instead, each programme page shows whether applications are open or closed, and closed programmes offer a form to be notified when they reopen.
The programmes
The Truist Foundation Fellowship is the only programme open at the time of writing. It is a 16-week virtual fellowship for small business owners, nonprofit leaders and entrepreneurs building solutions for underbanked and underserved communities. The cohort runs from 2 March to 22 June 2027, with a priority application deadline of 17 January 2027 and decisions by 20 February 2027. It also includes an in-person Summit.
Three other programmes are closed. The Western Union Global Fellowship is for entrepreneurs working with refugees, highly marginalised and displaced people. The Enlight Fellowship is for rising leaders creating solutions for youth mental wellbeing. The Flagship Fellowship is described as Watson Institute's signature programme, a 16-week fellowship for impact entrepreneurs from different backgrounds and sectors, with workshops, mentorship, connections to capital, pitch training and a professionally recorded pitch.
The pages of the three closed programmes do not state who is eligible, where applicants must be based, or when they will next run. Our catalogue lists them as global, but none of the pages we read names India.
Who can apply
For the Truist Foundation Fellowship, applicants must be 18 or older and run a business that has operated for between one and five years with fewer than ten employees. They need engaged customers, measurable results and some financial traction, and must commit to all 16 weeks of live sessions. The sessions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, US Eastern time, and take about eight to ten hours a week.
The fellowship is open only to founders located in listed US states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee in the Southeast; Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC and West Virginia in the Mid-Atlantic; Texas; and Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio in the Ohio Valley. Applications from outside these places are not considered. That means it is not open to India-based founders.
There are no fees to join, apart from possible travel and meals for in-person events.
Track record
Watson Institute reports that it has more than 3,600 alumni, based in 27 US states and 81 countries. It reports that 340 Basecamps have been hosted, reaching 25,000 participants. It also says alumni have been selected to Y Combinator and the Echoing Green Fellowship, and that some have been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 lists.
These are the organisation's own figures and its pages do not always agree. The number of Forbes 30 Under 30 alumni is given as nine on some pages and eleven on others. The share of alumni continuing a venture, working at large companies or studying is given as 90 per cent on one page and 93 per cent on others. The total number of people reached by all fellowships is given as 6,000 on one page, while the pages for single fellowships report larger numbers for one programme alone. We have not used these totals as measures of results.
Locations and contact
The main office is at Pearl E. Circle in Boulder, Colorado. Its contact page also lists a second location in Boca Raton, South Florida, where Watson Institute works with Lynn University on a tuition-based undergraduate degree in social impact and entrepreneurship. That degree is for students and is not a funding programme.
Watson Institute also keeps a careers page. General questions can go to info@watson.is.
Is it relevant to Indian founders
Based on what the pages say today, no programme currently open to applications accepts founders from India. If a global programme reopens and states its eligibility, the programme page will say so. Until then, treat Watson Institute as a US fellowship provider and check each call's location rules before applying.
