About CSIR-NEIST BioNEST Bio-incubator

BioNEST is the incubation centre of CSIR-NEIST, set up in 2021 with financial support from BIRAC. It takes in biotech and allied ventures — agri, food, health, industrial biotechnology, environment — mostly from the North East, and gives them space on the Jorhat campus plus supervised access to the institute's labs. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; no cohort dates are published.

What you get

  • Office space, internet, a shared printer and reception service, and common lab services, with up to 500 sq ft per incubatee and more possible case by case
  • Shared wet-lab workstations, independent lab cubicles for teams that need more room, and separate business suites
  • Access on request to CSIR-NEIST analytical instruments and to thirteen groups of processing and production units, with the concerned department's permission and charged separately
  • A business mentor and a faculty advisor for technical questions
  • Training programmes, and quarterly progress reviews against a set format
  • In-house filing of patents, trademarks, copyrights and industrial designs
  • Guidance on manufacturing and scientific compliance and on legal registrations
  • Expos and industry exposure programmes to meet buyers
  • Help applying for grants, seed funding, soft loans and equity investment, subject to schemes being open

Who can apply

  • Researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and individuals, preferably with a science or technology background
  • Startups with an innovative idea or an established working prototype
  • A majority of the founders or core team should be Indian citizens
  • Outside founders, not just people attached to the institute
  • Incorporation is not required to apply, but a selected unregistered team must register within eight months of approval
  • Idea, seed, early and growth stages are all accepted

How selection works: you register and send a detailed application with supporting documents. First-stage selection is confirmed by email. Shortlisted teams present their proposal in person or online, covering the technology and IP, value proposition, market and competition, funding requirement, capital structure, milestones, development and marketing plan, team and risks. Expert members may ask for more detail or a revised proposal. Final scoring weighs the strength of the idea, potential for IP and technology transfer, how much of the institute's facilities the project would use, the team's credentials, ability to raise finance, and break-even period. Selected applicants then submit due diligence papers. BioNEST says the decision is at its sole discretion and it is not bound to give reasons for a rejection. A Biotechnology Ignition Grant holder skips the initial assessment and signs an MoU instead.

How to apply: use the "Apply for Incubation" form in the BioNEST section of the CSIR-NEIST site. That form was not working when we last checked and the page itself asks applicants to email the incubator team instead, at the address shown on it. Read the guidelines document on the BioNEST downloads page first — it sets out eligibility, charges, tenure and exit terms.
