Track record
What FIRST TBI – Foundation for Innovation & Research at SASTRA reports about its portfolio.
Every number here is FIRST's own, taken from counters on its homepage in September 2026, and none of them is dated on the site. FIRST's pages disagree with each other on how many startups it has supported in total — the university's innovation page gives a much lower figure than the incubator's homepage, and the directory of current incubatees is a third number — so no total is published here.
All figures self-reported — sastratbi.in, as of Sept 2026.
Programmes they run
Standing programmes at FIRST TBI – Foundation for Innovation & Research at SASTRA, separate from the funding calls above.
The three funding schemes are national programmes with published national rules; FIRST delivers them as a centre and reports startups it has funded under each. None of them requires a connection to SASTRA. FIRST's nav also lists an Accelerators page, which is empty, so no accelerator is written up here.
Technopreneur Incubation
IncubationRolling application for founders from outside the SASTRA campus to be incubated at FIRST.
Best for: Founders from outside the campus working on hardware, sensors, robotics, drones or immersive media
- Idea – MVP
- In person
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
This is FIRST's own way in for founders with no connection to the university. There is no announced intake window and no closing date, so you can apply whenever you are ready.
What you get
- A place at FIRST's block on the SASTRA campus, with incubation and office space.
- Use of the 3D printing, IoT and immersive media labs.
- Access to FIRST's mentor panel.
- A route into the three national funding schemes FIRST delivers.
Who can apply
- Aspiring founders. The form asks for your current location and educational background and does not ask for any SASTRA roll number, department or affiliation.
- Your work has to fit one of five domains: 3D printing, IoT, virtual reality, robotics or drones.
How selection works: FIRST does not publish its selection process for this route.
How to apply: Fill the Apply for Incubation form on FIRST's Technopreneur page. It asks for your name, email, phone, domain, current location and educational background, a problem statement, how you came to want to start something, why you want to be an incubatee at FIRST, and a CV upload.
Student Incubation
IncubationRolling application for students to be incubated at FIRST.
Best for: Student teams building in FIRST's five domains
- Idea – Prototype
- In person
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
FIRST keeps a separate application route for students, alongside the one for outside founders. No intake window or closing date is announced.
Who can apply
- Students. FIRST does not state whether this is limited to SASTRA students.
- Your work has to fit one of five domains: 3D printing, IoT, virtual reality, robotics or drones.
How to apply: Fill the Apply for Incubation form on FIRST's Student page.
NIDHI-PRAYAS
Grant schemePrototype grant from the Department of Science and Technology for turning an idea into a working physical product, delivered through FIRST as a PRAYAS centre.
Best for: Innovators and very young startups with a physical product idea to prototype
- Idea – Prototype
- 18 months
- In person
- Free, no equity
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science and Technology
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
NIDHI-PRAYAS exists to get an idea to a physical prototype. FIRST runs it as one of the scheme's centres, and reports startups it has funded under it. No intake window or deadline is published.
What you get
- Grant support for building the prototype, released in tranches.
- A project period of eighteen months from the first tranche.
- Intellectual property that stays with you or your startup.
- The money can go on outsourced R&D, design engineering, consultancy and testing, raw material and consumables, fabrication of a working model, limited business travel, patent filing and contingency.
Who can apply
- An individual innovator with no company: at least eighteen, an Indian citizen with government-approved proof of nationality. If you work in a team, the team agrees a lead innovator who applies and receives the funds.
- Or a co-founder of a startup: incorporated in India, at least fifty-one per cent held by Indian citizens, not more than seven years old, under a turnover ceiling in every year since it started, and not already funded for this prototype by anyone else.
- The idea has to be based on technology and science, and you need a technical background.
- The prototype has to be a physical product completable within eighteen months. Anything already past prototype stage is out.
- Pure software, e-commerce, service solutions and app-based products are excluded, as is funding research or student internships.
- If you are employed or studying, you need a no-objection letter permitting you to apply, giving you time to work on the project, and confirming the intellectual property vests with you.
How selection works: A monitoring committee at the PRAYAS centre you apply to decides. Its decision to approve, reject or reduce the award is final. You cannot take PRAYAS support twice or from two centres, and you cannot hold it alongside NIDHI-EIR.
How to apply: Use the Apply for NIDHI-PRAYAS link on FIRST's scheme page, which opens its own application portal.
NIDHI-EIR
FellowshipTwelve-month Entrepreneur-in-Residence fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, with a monthly subsistence grant and space at FIRST.
Best for: Science and engineering graduates ready to work on a technology business idea full time
- Idea – Prototype
- 12 months
- In person
- Free, no equity
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science and Technology
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
NIDHI-EIR is for someone who wants to leave a job or graduate straight into building a technology business and needs a year of cover to do it. FIRST hosts recipients and reports fellows it has supported. No intake window or deadline is published.
What you get
- A monthly subsistence grant for twelve months.
- Office space and administrative support at the incubator.
- Guidance and mentoring from FIRST in business planning and execution.
- The grant stops from the date you receive the first tranche of any funding or investment you raise.
Who can apply
- Indian citizens with government-approved proof of nationality.
- Either four years of full-time undergraduate or postgraduate education towards one or more degrees, with the basic degree or diploma in science or engineering; or a three-year degree or diploma in science or engineering plus two years of full-time work after it.
- Typically a first-generation founder with no other source of income, pursuing the venture full time. It cannot run alongside another education programme, a paid assignment or another fellowship.
- You cannot be the promoter or hold more than ten per cent of another company, either when applying or after approval.
- You have to be registered on FIRST's pre-incubation or incubation programme for the whole period.
How selection works: Preference goes to ideas with larger technical uncertainty or long development times, ideas built on technology or intellectual property from publicly funded research or academic organisations, and ideas with real social impact. Ventures with little or no technical novelty, or less than six months to market, are discouraged from applying.
How to apply: Use the Apply for NIDHI-EIR link on FIRST's scheme page, which opens its own application portal.
Startup India Seed Fund Scheme
Grant schemeSeed support for DPIIT-recognised startups, from proof of concept through to market entry, delivered through FIRST as an approved incubator.
Best for: DPIIT-recognised startups under two years old, working towards market entry
- Prototype – Early revenue
- In person
- Free
- Grant support for selected startups
With Startup India, DPIIT
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme puts money into startups early enough that investors and banks are not an option yet, with the aim of getting them to a point where they are. FIRST publishes the scheme and reports startups it has funded under it. No intake window or deadline is published.
What you get
- Seed support for proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialisation.
- It comes as a grant and as debt or convertible debentures, each available once under the scheme's rules.
Who can apply
- Startups recognised by DPIIT and incorporated not more than two years before applying. You get DPIIT recognition from Startup India first.
- You need a product or service with market fit, a viable route to commercialisation and room to scale.
- Technology has to be at the core of the product, the service, the business model, the distribution model or the method.
- Indian promoters must hold at least fifty-one per cent of the shares when you apply.
- You must not already have taken more than the scheme's ceiling of support from another central or state government scheme. Prize money, subsidised space, a founder allowance and lab or prototyping access do not count against it.
- Preference goes to startups in social impact, waste and water management, financial inclusion, education, agriculture, food processing, biotechnology, healthcare, energy, mobility, defence, space, railways, oil and gas and textiles.
How to apply: Read the scheme guidelines linked on FIRST's page, then use its Apply Now route.

Labs & facilities
Equipment and space on campus.
These are FIRST's own labs and space, in its own block. SASTRA separately hosts ABLEST, a different incubator for diagnostics and therapeutics with containment and sequencing facilities — that is not FIRST's, and the university's research centres, campus labs and student numbers are not FIRST's either.
Rapid Prototyping Centre and 3D printing facility
A bank of printers working in polymers, resins, ceramics, biologicals and metals, alongside a design facility.
IoT lab
Sensors, modules, kits, signal generators, web nodes and transceivers, with cloud storage attached for collecting and analysing data from edge devices.
Virtual and augmented reality labs
Set up for incubatees building VR and AR content, including for training and tourism.
Incubation and office space
Part of FIRST's own block, which also holds an innovation and training centre and a board room.
Co-working space
Named by incubatees among what FIRST provides.
Support services
Help offered alongside funding and space.
IP & patents
FIRST counts patents, trademarks and copyrights filed by its incubatees and lists intellectual property partners.
Business advisory
A mentor panel, and business planning and execution support for fellowship recipients.
Design services
A design facility inside FIRST's own block.
Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
The Department of Science and Technology's own list of technology business incubators records FIRST as a NIDHI-TBI. FIRST's own pages do not use that term about themselves; they say it was set up in association with the department. Nothing on FIRST's site supports an Atal Incubation Centre or NITI Aayog designation, and its partners page is a wall of uncaptioned logos, so nothing is claimed from it.
NIDHI-TBI (Department of Science and Technology)
The Department of Science and Technology's own list of technology business incubators records FIRST as a NIDHI-TBI, in a column that marks other centres as plain TBI. FIRST's own pages say only that it was set up in association with the department, so this comes from the department's list rather than from the incubator. That list does not show whether the designation or its funding is current.
How to apply to FIRST TBI – Foundation for Innovation & Research at SASTRA
About FIRST TBI – Foundation for Innovation & Research at SASTRA
SASTRA Deemed to be University Foundation for Innovation & Research at SASTRA Technology Business Incubator Department of Science and Technology
FIRST पाँच थ्रस्ट क्षेत्र गिनाता है: 3D printing, Internet of Things, virtual reality, robotics और drones।
Department of Science and Technology
