The Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission (StartupTN, also known as TANSIM) is the nodal agency of the Government of Tamil Nadu for promoting and developing the startup ecosystem in the state. Established in 2018 under the MSME Department, StartupTN operates from Chennai and works to make Tamil Nadu one of India's top startup destinations. The mission implements the Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Policy and runs a portfolio of programs spanning grants, incubation, acceleration, and ecosystem development.
StartupTN coordinates with district-level incubation centres, educational institutions, and private sector partners to ensure that startup support reaches founders beyond Chennai into cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and Salem.
StartupTN serves as the bridge between the Tamil Nadu government and the entrepreneurial community. It implements state policies, disburses grants, manages incubation infrastructure, and runs thematic accelerator programs. Its district-level approach is notable, as it actively works to develop startup ecosystems in Tier 2-3 cities across Tamil Nadu rather than concentrating resources only in Chennai.
StartupTN runs several flagship programs including TNIF (Tamil Nadu Innovation Fund) grants for early-stage startups, sector-specific accelerator programs in partnership with industry partners, the TANSIM Grand Challenge for problem-statement-based innovation, and district-level incubation centres. The mission also facilitates startup registrations under the Tamil Nadu Startup Policy, provides mentorship connections, and organizes networking events. StartupTN has launched focused programs for women entrepreneurs and social impact ventures, and operates co-working spaces through its incubation network.
Startup founders across Tamil Nadu, including those in Tier 2-3 cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy. The programs cover a wide range of sectors from agritech and healthtech to SaaS and cleantech. First-time founders, women entrepreneurs, and social enterprise builders find particular value in StartupTN's accessible and inclusive programs.
StartupTN has been instrumental in elevating Tamil Nadu's position in India's startup rankings. Its district-level incubation approach ensures that startup support is not limited to Chennai, making it one of the more geographically inclusive state startup missions in India. The combination of grants, accelerators, and policy support creates a comprehensive support structure for founders at every stage.
