Track record

What MGU Innovation Foundation reports about its portfolio.

These are MGUIF's own published figures and they are undated. Its counter and its named startups list do not agree with each other.

19Startups supportedMGUIF's own undated counter reads 19 total incubatees. Its startups page separately lists 22 companies by name, so its own pages do not agree; the counter also reports 50 applications received.

All figures self-reported — incubation.mguif.com, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at MGU Innovation Foundation, separate from the funding calls above.

MGUIF runs two rolling space offers and two funding routes. The space offers are paid and take no equity; the seed scheme takes an equity stake through convertible debentures. Both funding routes are currently between intakes.

An eleven-month virtual incubation that lets a startup register and run its company from the MGUIF address without being on campus.

Best for: Founders who want a registered address and incubation support without taking a desk on campus

  • Idea – Early revenue
  • 11 months
  • Online
  • Paid, no equity
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

MGUIF offers incubation in two modes, and this is the one that does not need you on site. A virtual incubatee is not physically present at the facility but can form a company using the address MGUIF provides, or move an existing business's registered place of business there. MGUIF's own framing is that it lets a founder start with minimal cost.

What you get

  • Use of the MGUIF address for company registration and official correspondence, for eleven months
  • Lounge access, parking and a receptionist, included
  • Conference and meeting room and the studio, available at extra cost
  • Access to MGUIF's high performance computer and spray dryer at subsidised rates
  • MGUIF's panel of mentors
  • A route into the Big Idea Fest and the Seed Funding scheme

Who can apply

  • Students, faculty or any outsider with an innovative idea and a strong business plan
  • Registered entities including proprietorships, partnership firms and other legally recognised bodies; you can also register your company after joining

How selection works: The MGUIF incubation department reviews the application and replies within forty-eight hours.

How to apply: Sign up on MGUIF's incubation portal with your email address, a password and a mobile number, log in using the one-time code sent to your registered email, and apply from the dashboard. Questions go to incubation.manager@mguif.com or the front desk on +91 481-2992684.

Full Virtual Incubation guide

Desks and laboratory space on the Mahatma Gandhi University campus, charged per seat per month, with access to the university's instruments.

Best for: Startups that need a desk, a lab bench or campus instruments in Kottayam

  • Prototype – Early revenue
  • Monthly, per seat
  • In person
  • Paid, no equity
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

The second of MGUIF's two incubation modes puts you on campus. Seats are charged per month and the admission process is the same as for virtual incubation. MGUIF also offers space for companies to set up their own laboratories, and points deep tech teams at the university's equipment in nanotechnology, advanced chemistry and environmental science.

What you get

  • A furnished seat with internet, electricity, a dining room, car parking, a conference room and printers, with a nominal fee on some services
  • Space for setting up a laboratory
  • Access to the university's instrumentation and mentoring from its researchers
  • MGUIF's high performance computer and spray dryer at subsidised rates
  • Concessional rates for students and faculty of Mahatma Gandhi University and its affiliated colleges

Who can apply

  • Registered companies including proprietorships, partnership firms and other legally recognised entities
  • The same applicants as virtual incubation, which MGUIF describes as open to students, faculty or any outsider

How selection works: The same route as virtual incubation — the incubation department reviews and replies within forty-eight hours.

How to apply: Sign up and apply on MGUIF's incubation portal. Questions go to info@mguif.com or +91 481-2992684.

A RUSA 2.0 innovation grant for Kerala innovators and MGU-affiliated students and faculty to build a prototype, with three years of incubation for winners. Registration for the 2.0 edition has closed.

Best for: Kerala innovators and MGU-affiliated students and faculty with an idea or early prototype

  • Idea – Prototype
  • 36 months of incubation for winners
  • Hybrid
  • Free
  • Grant support for selected startups

With RUSA 2.0, Ministry of Education

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

The Big Idea Competition is how MGUIF puts the RUSA 2.0 Innovation Grant in front of founders. MGUIF is direct about what it is not: the innovation grant is not prize money for having an idea, it is there to help an innovator build the prototype or product and scale it into a venture. The 2.0 edition closed for registration on 3 December 2025 after an extension, published its shortlist on 22 December 2025, and lists a pitch day on 21 January 2026, with the award ceremony to be announced. It has run before and is worth watching for the next edition.

What you get

  • Thirty-six months of incubation at MGUIF
  • Grant support towards building the prototype or product
  • Help with patent registration
  • Seed funding and investor introductions
  • Mentoring from domain experts

Who can apply

  • Any interested inventor based in Kerala
  • All students and faculty of colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, including anyone associated with the university up to two years earlier
  • Teams at the ideation and design stage, proof of concept stage, or working towards a minimum viable prototype
  • Not eligible: service projects and asset creation; proposals that outsource the whole product build or any major milestone; purchase of self-services; use of the grant for CSR activity; and any company where a director holding more than a fifth of the stake has already taken an MGUIF grant for another company

How selection works: Idea submission, then a published shortlist, then a pitch day in front of a panel, then an award ceremony. MGUIF publishes its guidelines and a sample pitch deck alongside the entry form.

How to apply: Register and submit the idea on MGUIF's incubation portal during the entry window. Questions go to incubation.manager@mguif.com.

See the latest call

Staged seed investment for DPIIT-recognised private limited startups under five years old, taken against convertible debentures. The last published round closed in July 2024.

Best for: DPIIT-recognised private limited startups under five years old, incubated at MGUIF or nominated by a government-approved incubator

  • MVP – Early revenue
  • In person
  • Free, takes equity
  • Grant support for selected startups

With RUSA, Ministry of Education

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

MGUIF formulated this scheme under the RUSA guidelines. It is the one route where MGUIF takes a stake: funding is provided against compulsorily convertible debentures, and the incubator's equity is capped at 9.5 per cent. Funds come in three instalments, and an expert committee checks that each has been used as intended before releasing the next. The last published call closed on 15 July 2024, with decisions promised within two months, and no newer round has been posted — treat it as between intakes.

What you get

  • Seed investment towards product development, testing and trials, marketing, work on intellectual property, and operational expenses including working capital
  • Release in three instalments with an expert committee review before each further release

Who can apply

  • A private limited company, or a startup willing to convert to one before funds are released
  • Recognised by DPIIT and incorporated not more than five years before applying
  • Affiliated with MGUIF for at least six months, with a valid lease for co-working space or a virtual office at MGUIF
  • Companies from outside MGUIF may apply if nominated by a government-approved incubator; only one company per incubator
  • Technology has to sit in the core product, service, business model, distribution model or methodology
  • Focus areas named are data science, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, renewable energy, tourism, sustainable agriculture using technology, nanotechnology, healthcare innovation, edutech including college ERP systems, e-commerce platforms and drone technology

How selection works: A technical review committee evaluates written proposals against published criteria, shortlisted teams present to the committee, and it assesses how innovative the proposal is and whether it can be commercialised. A separate approval committee of multifunctional experts decides the allocation, and progress is monitored after funding.

How to apply: Prepare a proposal in the format MGUIF specifies, setting out objectives, milestones and expenditure, and submit it during the designated period. A balance sheet, profit and loss statement and bank statements may be asked for. Clarifications go to incubation.manager@mguif.com or +91 481-2992684.

Official approvals this incubator holds.

MGUIF describes itself as running a DST NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubator. It makes no Atal Incubation Centre or NIDHI seed-support claim, and it appears in none of the other DST NIDHI registers.

DST NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubator (i-TBI)

MGUIF's own careers page advertises a chief executive post at "the MGUIF DST NIDHI Inclusive Technology Business Incubator (i-TBI), established with the support of the DST". The Department of Science and Technology's published list of NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubators carries Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam as a host institute, with healthcare, medtech and biopharma as its thrust area. The register names the host university rather than the foundation, and gives no sanction date, period or status, so whether the support is current cannot be told from it.

How to apply to MGU Innovation Foundation

Choosing the right route

MGUIF has four doors and they are not interchangeable. If you want an address and a light touch, apply for virtual incubation — it runs eleven months, does not need you on campus, and lets you register a company at the MGUIF address. If you need a desk, a lab bench or access to the university's instruments, apply for the co-working space instead. If you only have an idea or an early prototype, wait for the next Big Idea Competition rather than applying for seed funding. If you are already a registered private limited company with a product, the seed scheme is the one to aim at.

Get the entity question right first

Both space offers are written for registered entities — proprietorship, partnership firm or another legally recognised body. You can apply before you register and incorporate afterwards, and you can move an existing business's registered address to MGUIF, but decide which of those you are doing before you fill the form. The seed scheme goes further and requires a private limited company; if you are something else, you will have to convert before money can be released.

You do not have to be from the university

The virtual incubation page says in as many words that students, faculty or any outsider can apply. The Big Idea grant is written for any interested inventor based in Kerala as well as for students and faculty of affiliated colleges. Do not rule yourself out because MGUIF sits on a campus.

How applications work

Everything goes through MGUIF's incubation portal, not the main website. Sign up with an email address and mobile number, confirm the one-time code sent to your email, and apply from the dashboard. The incubation team says it comes back within forty-eight hours. Keep an eye on the email you registered with — that is where both the confirmation and the reply go.

What reviewers look for

For the Big Idea grant, MGUIF states plainly that the grant is not for having an idea; it is for building the prototype or product. Write the application as a build plan with milestones. It will not fund a service project, asset creation, or work where you outsource the whole build or a major milestone. Check your cap table too: a director with more than a fifth of the company who has already taken an MGUIF grant elsewhere makes the company ineligible.

For seed funding, the published criteria are a demonstrable market fit, a viable commercialisation strategy, room to scale, and technology sitting in the core of the product, service, business model or distribution rather than bolted on. A technical review committee scores written proposals first, shortlisted teams present to it, and a separate approval committee decides. Prepare the proposal in the format asked for, with objectives, milestones and a line-by-line spend plan, and have your balance sheet, profit and loss statement and bank statements ready.

Two things to check before you plan around them

The seed round published on the site closed in July 2024 and no newer call has been posted, and the Big Idea Competition 2.0 has closed for registration. Both are recurring, so ask the incubation manager when the next intake opens rather than assuming either is live. Also confirm the current rates for virtual incubation and co-working, and whether you qualify for the concessional student and faculty rate, before you budget.

About MGU Innovation Foundation

MGU Innovation Foundation (MGUIF) is a not-for-profit Section 8 company incorporated on 19 December 2019 as a special purpose vehicle of Mahatma Gandhi University, and it works from the university campus at Priyadarsini Hills in Kottayam, Kerala. It describes itself as the business innovation ecosystem of the university and says it functions under the guidance of the RUSA 2.0 project of the Ministry of Education. Its own recruitment notices describe it as running the MGUIF DST NIDHI Inclusive Technology Business Incubator, established with the support of the Department of Science and Technology.

What they support

MGUIF says it fosters incubation in cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cyber security, the Internet of Things, and mobile and web applications, as well as science and engineering fields including automobile, mechatronics, robotics, nanotechnology, bioinformatics and drug design. The technology thrust area recorded against Mahatma Gandhi University in the Department of Science and Technology's published list of inclusive Technology Business Incubators is healthcare, medtech and biopharma. Its seed funding notification names a different and more commercial set of focus areas: data science, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things; renewable energy; tourism; sustainable agriculture using technology; nanotechnology; healthcare innovation; edutech, including college ERP systems; e-commerce platforms; and drone technology. Read together, the foundation is broad rather than specialised, with a visible tilt towards deep tech and life sciences because of the laboratories it sits next to.

Programmes

There are two ways to take space and two ways to apply for funding.

Virtual incubation runs for eleven months and does not require you to be on site. The foundation lets an incubatee use the MGUIF address to register a company, which is the point of it for a founder trying to start with low overheads. It is a paid arrangement, with concessional rates for students and faculty of Mahatma Gandhi University and its affiliated colleges. Lounge access, parking and a receptionist are included; the conference room and the studio are charged separately.

The co-working space is a desk on campus, charged per seat per month, again with concessional rates for university and affiliated-college students and faculty. The admission process is the same as for virtual incubation. The foundation also offers space for setting up laboratories, and points deep tech companies at the university's equipment in nanotechnology, advanced chemistry and environmental science.

The MGUIF Big Idea Competition is an innovation grant run under RUSA 2.0. MGUIF is careful to say the grant is not prize money for having an idea; it is meant to get a prototype or product built. The most recent edition, Big Idea Competition 2.0, closed for registration in December 2025 with a pitch day listed for January 2026. Winners are offered thirty-six months of incubation at MGUIF, help with patent registration, seed funding and investor introductions, and mentoring.

The Seed Funding scheme supports product development, testing and trials, marketing, work on intellectual property, and working capital. It is released in three instalments, with an expert committee checking that each is used as intended before the next one goes out. MGUIF takes an equity stake through compulsorily convertible debentures, capped at 9.5 per cent. The last published round closed on 15 July 2024 and no newer call has been posted, so treat it as between intakes and ask before planning around it.

Who can apply

This is the part worth reading closely, because MGUIF is more open than a university incubator usually is. The virtual incubation page states plainly that students, faculty or any outsider with an innovative idea and a strong business plan can apply. Applicants for either space offer need to be a registered entity — a proprietorship, a partnership firm or another legally recognised body — or to register after joining; an existing company can move its registered place of business to MGUIF.

The Big Idea grant is written for any interested inventor based in Kerala, and separately for students and faculty of colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, including people who were associated with the university up to two years earlier. Service projects and asset creation are not funded, nor is work where the whole product build or a major milestone is outsourced. A director holding more than a fifth of a company who has already taken an MGUIF grant for another company is not eligible.

The Seed Funding scheme is tighter. It asks for a private limited company recognised by DPIIT and incorporated not more than five years before applying, with a lease for co-working or a virtual office at MGUIF and at least six months of association with the incubator. A company from outside MGUIF can still apply, but it must be nominated by a government-approved incubator, and only one company per incubator is accepted.

Facilities and support

MGUIF runs a high performance computing service called Paramastra, used for academic and industrial research and development work. It has an audio and visual studio covering video and audio recording and editing, graphic design, VFX and 3D work. It operates a fifteen-litre spray dryer used in nutraceutical processing, and has announced a particle size analyser. Incubatees get these at subsidised rates. Beyond its own equipment, incubatees can reach the university's instrumentation and its researchers. The foundation also keeps a panel of external mentors drawn from industry and academia.

Track record

The incubation portal's counters report nineteen incubatees and fifty applications received; the same portal separately lists twenty-two companies by name under its startups page, so the two numbers do not agree and neither is dated. Named incubatees include Panlys Nanotech, Embase Pro Suit, Estoc Automation, Vitromix Lab, Kulina, Sanbella Edutech and Academy of Material Research. MGUIF also takes on consultancy and project work in its own right — a detailed project report for a KSCSTE supercomputing centre, the design and supervision of a research and development centre for Kerala Rubber Limited, computational chemistry work for Camlin Fine Sciences, and an AI-powered diving learning system for an Indian naval base.

How to apply

Incubation applications do not go through the main site. They go through a separate portal, where you sign up with an email address, password and mobile number, log in with a one-time code sent to that address, and then apply from your dashboard. The incubation team says it replies within forty-eight hours. Questions go to the incubation manager's inbox or the front desk line. Recruitment is handled separately again, on the foundation's careers page, which has carried posts for a chief executive, course managers and several internships; applications there go to the human resources inbox. News and events, including bootcamps and workshops, are posted on the main site.
