How to apply to Prime Venture Partners

Know what this is

  • Prime Venture Partners is an equity investor, not a grant, and it publishes no application form or intake window.
  • It backs early-stage tech companies and says it is sector agnostic.

How to get in front of the team

  • Ask for an introduction from a portfolio founder, an angel or another investor the team knows. Prime says this is the best route.
  • Cold messages are described by Prime as the least effective route because of volume. If you must write, address the investment team through the general inbox at info@primevp.in.
  • Writing, speaking or posting about the problem you are solving is something Prime says helps it find founders.

Prepare for the first meeting

  • Expect 45 minutes to an hour covering your team, market and problem. Prime says it spends the most time on the team.
  • Prime points founders to its fundraising tip videos before a first meeting.
  • Size your market from the bottom up, and be ready to say why your solution is 10X better.

What reviewers look for

  • A team with a strong passion for the problem and a bias for action.
  • Early validation: revenue, engaged users or exceptional founder-market fit.
  • A route to large revenue scale over time.

Timeline

  • After the first meeting come a lead partner meeting, an all-partner meeting with due diligence, and the Investment Committee. Prime says the decision takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on sector.

About Prime Venture Partners

Prime Venture Partners is an early-stage venture capital fund based in Bengaluru. It is led by Sanjay Swamy, Shripati Acharya, Amit Somani and Brij Bhushan, and it says it is often the first institutional investor in a company. It started in 2012 as AngelPrime and took its current name in 2015.

What kind of fund it is

Prime describes itself as sector agnostic and founders first. It says it prefers to be the first institutional cheque and to lead the round, and that it does not write small cheques as part of large rounds. Its own pages say it has invested between seed and Series A. It also says it has backed companies before they had written a line of code or earned any revenue, though early validation such as revenue, engaged users or strong founder-market fit improves the odds.

Who can approach it

This is not a grant or an accelerator. There is no cohort, no application form and no deadline on the site. Prime says it meets founders at all stages, from idea to mature startup, and that its sweet spot is a company with some initial product-market fit and an early business model. It is an equity investor, so a founder who does not want to sell shares should look at grants and non-dilutive schemes instead.

How the investment process works

Prime lists four steps. The first meeting is with someone on the investment team and lasts 45 minutes to an hour, and it is mostly about your team and the problem. The second is a meeting with the lead partner. The third is a meeting with all partners, while reference and due diligence checks run in parallel. The last is the Investment Committee and a decision. Depending on the sector, it says a decision can take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks.

What it looks for

Prime names four things. A star team with a deep passion for the problem. A big market sized from the bottom up. A solution that is 10X better than what exists today. And a path to revenue scale, which it calls 1-10-30-100, meaning how long it takes, and how much invested capital, to reach four revenue milestones.

After the investment

Prime says it helps with product, go-to-market and sales strategy, team building, partnerships, later fundraising, and operating help on finance, legal, PR and community. It says it does not make any decisions about your business; those stay with the founders. Each fund lasts 10 years and invests in the first 3 years, so it expects to hold a company for 7 to 10 years, ideally until an IPO or a sizeable acquisition.

Track record and portfolio

Prime says it has invested in over 50 companies, with 7 exits and 1 IPO. These figures are its own claims. Companies shown on its site include MyGate, Niyo, WheelsEye, Dozee, Sunstone eduversity, Wayground (formerly Quizizz) and Frinks AI. It also publishes podcasts, articles and videos for founders on its Founder's Zone.

How to reach Prime Venture Partners

The best way in is a referral from someone Prime already knows, such as a portfolio founder, an angel or another investor. The contact page lists the investment team's LinkedIn pages for this reason. If you have no referral, Prime says to build visibility by writing or speaking about the problem you solve, or to reach out to the investment team directly. The office is in Whitefield, Bengaluru, and the general inbox is info@primevp.in.
