About Qmet Laser Hackathon 2026

Qmet's NV-centre magnetometers need a rugged optical source, and this challenge asks entrants to build one: a compact, efficient 532 nm laser module delivering around 100 mW at the fibre output, able to survive real deployment and, for space-bound designs, radiation. The page publishes a detailed table of mandatory and target specifications covering wavelength, output power, fibre coupling, electrical power and efficiency, operating and storage temperature, humidity, thermal and power stability, warm-up time, size, mass, vibration, shock, electromagnetic compatibility, lifetime and fault protection.

What you get

  • A reward for each of two winning entries
  • The opportunity to collaborate with Qmet Tech Foundation on its quantum sensing projects

Who can apply

  • Not stated. The page sets no company, student or nationality requirement

How selection works: submissions have to show clearly how each mandatory parameter is met, with supporting design data, simulations or test results where available. Radiation tolerance is expected only for designs intended for space flight, and the shock levels and final qualification tests depend on the target deployment platform.

How to apply: through the form linked from the challenge page. No opening or closing date is published, so check with Qmet before you start work.
