Programmes they run

Standing programmes at Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, separate from the funding calls above.

Only the Atal New India Challenge takes applications from startups directly. The other entries are schemes that fund host institutions, and founders reach them through an individual centre's own call. AIM's homepage says the portals for Atal Tinkering Labs, Atal Incubation Centres and Atal Community Innovation Centres are not currently open.

Grant-in-aid and support for prototype-stage technology solutions to national challenge areas, applied for directly to AIM during a call.

Best for: Prototype-stage startups and MSMEs with a working solution to a listed challenge area

  • Prototype
  • 12 to 24 months per the May 2026 guidelines
  • Grant support for selected startups

With NITI Aayog

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

ANIC is the one AIM programme that startups apply to directly. It asks for technology-based solutions that already work as a prototype and answer a sector challenge, and it supports selected startups through to commercialisation. Calls are phase by phase and each phase has its own challenge areas.

What you get

  • Grant-in-aid, released in three tranches over the project
  • Mentorship and support through to commercialisation
  • A project period of 12 to 24 months under the May 2026 guidelines (older AIM pages say 12 to 18 months)

Who can apply

  • The who-can-apply page lists MSMEs, startups, R&D organisations, academicians and innovators
  • The guidelines set the entity rules: an Indian company recognised as a startup by DPIIT
  • A working prototype relevant to the challenge area
  • The majority stake in the applicant must be held in India

Challenge areas listed for ANIC 2.0: e-mobility, road transportation, space technology and applications, medical devices and equipment, sanitation technology, waste management, agriculture, post and telegraph, drinking water and sanitation, renewable energy and clean-tech, education and open innovation.

On equity: AIM's awards page describes part of the award as a small government equity stake, while the ANIC 2.0 guidelines describe the support only as grant-in-aid. We could not reconcile the two, so check the current call before applying.

How to apply: Applications are received only through the online portal on the AIM website during a call. We did not find an open call or deadline when we checked, so confirm on the AIM website. Questions go to anic-aim@gov.in.

AIM funds universities, institutes and companies to run incubators; founders apply to the individual centre, not to AIM.

Best for: Institutions that want to host an incubator; founders reach the scheme through a centre's own intake

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

Atal Incubation Centres are incubators that AIM supports with grants-in-aid at universities, institutions and corporates. The scheme is for the organisations that host a centre. A founder who wants to be incubated applies to a centre, and each centre runs its own call.

What the scheme provides to a centre

  • Grants-in-aid to set up the centre for a period of five years
  • Seed support that a centre can pass to its incubated startups, with a cap per startup, in the form of grants, and the guidelines also mention debt or equity

Who can apply to AIM to host a centre

  • Higher educational institutions, R&D institutes, companies, alternative investment funds registered with SEBI and business accelerators
  • At least three years of existence at the time of application
  • Non-government applicants that made a loss in any of the previous three years are not considered

How to apply: As a host, apply online to AIM during a call. AIM's homepage currently says the AIC application portal is not open. As a founder, find a centre in AIM's register and follow that centre's own call.

AIM funds host institutions to run community innovation centres in unserved and underserved regions.

Best for: Institutions that want to host a community innovation centre; innovators use a centre once it is set up

  • Idea
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

Atal Community Innovation Centres bring technology-led innovation to unserved and underserved parts of India, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, aspirational districts, and tribal, hilly and coastal areas. They support pre-incubation and grassroots innovators. The scheme is for the institutions that host a centre.

What the scheme provides to a centre

  • A grant from AIM, on the condition that a funding partner provides equal or greater matching funding

Who can apply to AIM to host a centre

  • Publicly funded institutions, privately funded institutions, or a public-private partnership
  • A funding partner, or self-funding of the matching contribution

How to apply: Applications are submitted online to AIM through a web portal when a call opens. AIM's homepage currently says the ACIC portal is not open. AIM's register of ACICs lists the centres that are established.

How to apply to Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog

About Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog

Atal New India Challenge,

Atal New India Challenge

पहले चरण में e-mobility, road transportation, space technology and applications, medical devices and equipment, sanitation technology, waste management और agriculture शामिल हैं। दूसरे चरण में agriculture, post and telegraph, drinking water and sanitation, renewable energy and clean-tech, education और open innovation शामिल हैं।

Atal Incubation Centres

Atal Community Innovation Centres
