Which route in to use

BVCSRB has one real incubation programme, PrISE (Promote and Incubate Social Enterprises). Everything else on its site is either an event, a training course, a research output, or CSR advisory for corporates. If you are a founder, PrISE is the door.

• Running a social startup with a working prototype: apply to PrISE.
• Still at idea stage: the summit and the capacity-building workshops are the way to get in front of the team first.
• A corporate looking for CSR help: that is the Responsible Business side, not incubation.

How applications actually work

• The standing programme page sends you to a short registration form first — name, contact number, email and the name of your enterprise. You cannot reach the full application without it.
• The dated cohort pages skip that and link to their own application form.
• Cohort pages go stale. The site has carried a cohort page with a passed deadline while the home page said a later cohort had already started. Before you rely on a date, email or call the social entrepreneurship team and ask which cohort is open.
• Check the fee position for your cohort. The numbered cohort pages state an incubation fee, one of them also charged an application fee, and the standing programme page mentions no fee. Ask before you budget.

How selection works

Selection is two stages, and BVCSRB publishes both.

• Shortlisting is on six things: impact potential, scalability of the proposed solution and its impact, team capabilities, founders' background, market and financial attractiveness, and business feasibility.
• A final interview with a panel of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, in-house experts and industry experts. Finalists go into the cohort.

What reviewers are looking for

• A real prototype, not a plan. The eligibility list asks for a working prototype for pilot studies and a technological fix to a social problem. Bring what you have built.
• Impact you can measure and a business that can pay for itself. BVCSRB's whole framing is balancing social mission against revenue, so be ready on both the impact case and the unit economics.
• Scale. Both the shortlisting criteria and the cohort eligibility ask whether the solution scales beyond where it is now.
• A team, and your own story. Founders' background is a named shortlisting criterion.
• Community fit. Bala Vikasa's own work is rural community development across Telangana and neighbouring states, and the incubator leans on that network for grassroots testing grounds and early customers. A venture that can use that network has an easier case to make.

Practical notes

• PrISE is run in person. The office desk you get seats two and can serve as your registered office address, so plan for someone to be on the Ghatkesar campus.
• Different pages name the campus location differently — Ghatkesar in the address, Keesara on one programme page. It is the same 20-acre campus on the Outer Ring Road.
• BVCSRB says nothing about equity either way. Ask directly if it matters to you.

Bala Vikasa Center for Social and Responsible Business (BVCSRB, also written Bala Vikasa CSRB) is a social enterprise incubator on the Outer Ring Road at Ghatkesar, on the edge of Hyderabad, Telangana. It was set up in 2014 by Bala Vikasa Social Service Society, a community development organisation founded in 1991 by Andre Gingras and Bala Theresa Gingras. It describes itself as a centre of excellence for responsible entrepreneurship, and it does two quite different jobs: it incubates early-stage social startups, and it advises corporates on their CSR programmes.

How the incubation programme works

The founder-facing programme is PrISE, short for Promote and Incubate Social Enterprises. It runs for nine months in numbered cohorts. BVCSRB calls it a non-funded programme: it does not invest in the startups it takes, and the support is space, training, reviews and introductions rather than a cheque. The home page says a fourth cohort has started, with seven social startups working in health, agriculture and other sectors.

A cohort starts with an induction session with the BVCSRB team, then goal setting, where each startup writes down what it wants to reach and how, covering impact, scalability, stakeholders, business and financial model and management. From there the programme runs on customised training, workshops and seminars with in-house and industry experts, periodic business reviews by internal and external reviewers, and a demo day where startups pitch to investors, mentors, NGOs, funding agencies and other people from the sector. BVCSRB also helps incubatees build environment, health and safety practices into how the business actually runs.

BVCSRB publishes its own teaching method for the cohort. It uses the VCA method as the anchor concept in SOCENT, alongside neuro-linguistic programming for motivation, Asset Based Community Development, PRA and triple bottom line thinking for building socially minded enterprises and mobilising communities, learning by doing to understand the entrepreneurial process, and Result Based Management for building and managing an impact enterprise.

Who can apply

PrISE is for a highly motivated social entrepreneur running an early-age startup with an innovative idea that addresses a social problem, a working prototype for pilot studies, and a willingness to learn and experiment. The cohort pages put it slightly differently: mission-driven, with a scalable solution and a viable business model, looking for funding, mentorship and strategic guidance, and working in healthcare, education, environment, livelihood or another area of social impact. The invitation to apply also names startups with a minimum viable product and growth-stage startups that want non-financial support.

Elsewhere BVCSRB says its programmes are sector agnostic, across livelihoods, education, environment, agriculture, clean energy, drinking water, women empowerment, sustainable development and rural innovations.

The programme page's apply buttons lead to a short registration form asking for your name, contact number, email and the name of your enterprise. Completing that registration is required before you reach the full application form. The dated cohort pages instead link straight to an online application form of their own. Applications are shortlisted on impact potential, scalability, team capabilities, founders' background, market and financial attractiveness and business feasibility, and the shortlist then goes to a final interview panel of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, in-house experts and industry experts.

One thing to check before you apply: the numbered cohort pages state an incubation fee, and one of them also charged a separate application fee, while the standing programme page mentions no fee at all. Ask which applies to the cohort you are applying to.

Facilities

BVCSRB's campus covers 20 acres. Its Training and Incubation Block runs to nearly 1,40,000 sq ft. Selected startups get coworking space there, plus a furnished office desk seating two people that can double as the company's permanent office address, a meeting and conference room and printers. The campus also holds named training halls — INSPIRE, IMPACT, INFLUENCE, IMPART, IDEATE, ITERATE and INTERACT — which together seat more than 600 people, a residential block with suites, twin-sharing rooms and dormitories, a dining hall, an amphitheatre, lawns, WiFi, projectors, a multimedia studio with recording facilities and parking. BVCSRB says the dedicated space has the potential to hold up to 150 startups under one roof. There is also a city office in Somajiguda, Hyderabad.

Other things it runs

Impulse is BVCSRB's annual social entrepreneurship summit, held on the Hyderabad campus. The most recent edition published on its site, Impulse 2025, ran on 11 November 2025 and mixed panels, masterclasses, an expo, pitching and reverse-pitching sessions and an incubators symposium. BVCSRB also runs capacity-building training and executive post-graduate programmes on social entrepreneurship, publishes research in a social responsibility series, and works on ecosystem building, including an effort to form a pan-India federation of social startups. On the corporate side it consults on designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating CSR programmes. It has also run a pre-incubation workshop series for tribal women entrepreneurs in Telangana with WE Hub.

Rahul Bhardwaj is Senior Director and Head of Bala Vikasa CSRB. Shoury Reddy Singareddy is Executive Director of Bala Vikasa, and Ramana Gupta is an advisor and board member. Vijender Mogili manages the social entrepreneurship team, with Anil Battini and Janani Mohan alongside him. BVCSRB publishes a named mentor panel drawn from Upaya Social Ventures, Caspian Impact Investment Adviser, Bosch, AssisTech Foundation, the Telangana State Innovation Cell and others. Careers are listed on its own careers page, currently including incubation, research and impact assessment, CSR and networking roles, with applications going to its HR inbox.
