Pick the right track

BBC's support is organised by how far along your idea is:

• Just an idea, or still a student project: Pre-Incubate — you get help testing whether the idea is technically feasible and has a market, mentorship, and access to basic shared lab equipment.
• You have an idea and need to build the actual product: Incubate — you get your own private wet lab plus access to BBC's shared high-end instruments.
• You already have a market-ready product: Accelerate — the focus shifts to pilot partnerships with hospitals, pharma and agri-industry players, help with regulatory approvals for other markets, and getting investor-ready.
• You need bio-products manufactured at scale, not just a lab bench: the Co-Manufacturing cGMP facility is a separate route, open even if you are not otherwise incubated here.
• You need lab testing done but don't want to build your own lab: Contract Research is a paid service open to outside companies and institutions too.

How applications work

BBC's site does not publish a written eligibility checklist, selection process or deadline for any of the three tracks — the apply page is a simple form. Given that, the practical path is to apply online and then follow up by email (info@bioinnovationcentre.com) or phone (+91 80 2852 2270) for specifics on your case, or to visit the centre at Electronic City Phase 1, Bengaluru.

What to have ready

• For Pre-Incubate: be ready to explain the problem your idea solves and any early validation you've already done — the track exists specifically to test feasibility and market potential, so you don't need a finished case yet.
• For Incubate: come with more than an idea — this track is described as being for startups "ready to build their products", so a working concept or early prototype helps.
• For Accelerate: you should already have a market-ready product, since this track is aimed at scaling sales and preparing for Series A/B fundraising, not building the first version.
• For Co-Manufacturing or Contract Research: these are paid services rather than incubation tracks, so come with a defined scope of work — batch production needs for Co-Manufacturing, or a specific assay/testing requirement for Contract Research.

A caution on public numbers

Several of BBC's own programme pages (Pre-Incubate, Incubate, Accelerate, Co-Manufacturing) currently show unfilled stat counters ("0+" ideas validated, "0L" manufacturing capacity, and similar) rather than real figures, and the main Facilities page is marked as still being updated. Don't take those zeros as literal — verify current capacity and eligibility directly with BBC before applying.

Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) is a life-sciences incubator run as a Government of Karnataka undertaking, inside Helix Biotech Park on the IBAB campus in Electronic City Phase 1, Bengaluru. It works with startups across five sectors: health tech, agri tech, food tech, climate tech and Industry 5.0.

How programmes work

Founders move through three staged tracks. Pre-Incubate is for early-stage innovators and students who have a promising idea but need to test it — BBC assesses the idea's technical feasibility and market potential, connects them with mentors from academia and industry, and gives access to common instruments and basic lab facilities for early experiments. Incubate is for startups ready to build their product: they get a private, fully furnished wet lab with its own gas, water and power, plus access to central instruments such as mass spectrometry, SEM and flow cytometry without having to buy the equipment themselves, along with co-working space. Accelerate is for growth-stage startups with a market-ready product, and focuses on business scaling — strategic introductions to hospitals, pharma companies and agri-industries for pilots and sales, guidance on regulatory pathways like FDA, CE and CDSCO for going global, and preparing founders for Series A/B fundraising through valuation workshops and investor introductions.

BBC's own pages do not state a fixed duration, published eligibility checklist, cost, or equity terms for any of the three tracks, and the site's application page is a simple call-to-action with no listed steps or documents — a founder currently has to apply through the online form or reach the centre by email or phone to learn the specifics.

Alongside the three tracks, BBC runs two paid services open to non-incubated organisations too. Co-Manufacturing is a cGMP-compliant common manufacturing facility for taking biologics, enzymes and other bio-products from pilot to commercial scale, with stainless-steel and single-use bioreactors for microbial and mammalian cell culture, filtration and purification systems, and automated filling and packaging lines. Contract Research offers assay design and validation for drug discovery and diagnostics, advanced characterisation using HPLC and LC-MS, and antimicrobial and sterility testing, for external companies, startups and academic institutions that want to outsource R&D rather than build their own lab.

Who can apply

Each track targets a different stage: Pre-Incubate for early ideas and students, Incubate for startups ready to build a product, and Accelerate for startups that already have a market-ready product. Sector focus spans health tech (bio-electronics, diagnostics, healthcare robotics), agri tech (farm-level innovation, food-business support for FPOs, agricultural engineering including drones and IoT), food tech (processing technology, nutraceuticals, sustainable packaging), climate tech (carbon capture and ESG, bio-energy, circular economy, renewable energy) and Industry 5.0 (human-centric manufacturing, sustainable industry, resilient supply chains).

Facilities

BBC's Central Instrumentation Facility gives incubated startups shared access to equipment they would otherwise have to buy: a BD FACLyric flow cytometer (12-colour, 3 lasers), bioreactors from BioJenix and Nilsan Nishotech, an SP Virtis Genesis floor-model freeze drier, RT-PCR, a Leica Stellaris confocal microscope, an analytical ultracentrifuge, an LC-MS 2000, an Akta Avant 25 FPLC protein purification system, a Leica Thunder fluorescence imager (DAPI, GFP, RFP channels), and a Waters Xevo TQ-S Micro UPLC-MS system. Incubate-track startups get their own private, modular wet lab with gas, water and power laid on. Separately, the Co-Manufacturing facility adds cGMP-grade bioreactors and downstream processing equipment for scaling up production once a product is ready to manufacture. A general co-working area with meeting and conference rooms rounds out the physical space. As of this research, BBC's dedicated facilities page was still under construction and several programme pages did not yet show real capacity figures.

Scale

BBC's own cohort page names String Bio, Yostra, Indoor Biotech, Aindra, Terra Blue, Pandorum, Atrimed and VNIR among its incubated startups, and says it has supported "100+ more" beyond those named. Two of its startups have had recent, large funding rounds reported on BBC's own news page: Pandorum Technologies, a regenerative-medicine company, raised a Series B round, and 4baseCare, a precision-oncology company, also raised a Series B round. BBC's pages do not give an overall count of startups supported, survival rate, jobs created or total capital raised across its portfolio.

BBC also connects founders to third-party grant schemes rather than running its own grant fund: the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, DST NIDHI's Seed Support System, and K-Tech's Idea2PoC grant-in-aid, plus a BIRAC BioNest grant that funded its own MedTech facility. Its agri-tech work is backed by NABARD and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.

Who runs it

BBC is chaired by Dr. Manjula N, IAS, who is also Secretary to the Karnataka government's Department of Electronics, IT, BT and S&T. Rahul Sharanappa Sankanur, IAS, Managing Director of the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS), sits on the board as a director, alongside Prof. D. Sundar of IBAB, who also holds the Biocon Chair. Dr. Mohamed Adil A.A. is BBC's Managing Director. BBC currently lists no open job positions on its careers page. It runs a regular calendar of workshops and bootcamps, including a recurring Medicos Innovation Bootcamp series for healthcare-innovation students and founders, hands-on IoT and 3D-printing workshops, and a month-long horticulture entrepreneurship programme run with Syngenta Foundation India and the University of Horticultural Sciences.
