BMS Institute of Technology and Management (BMSIT&M) is an engineering college in Yelahanka, Bengaluru. Its innovation centre, BICEP (BMS Innovation Centre and Entrepreneurship Park), is set up to encourage students and faculty to build innovation-driven enterprises.

The incubation centre

The centre says it has been recognised and approved as Host Institute to set up a Business Incubator by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. It is housed on the institute campus. Its support covers space, mentoring, training programmes and networking.

What incubated companies get

Incubated companies get ready-to-use office space with furniture, connectivity and shared facilities such as a meeting room. They have access to the institute library and to the R&D laboratories, workshops and testing and characterisation facilities on campus, along with technical support from institute faculty. Training covers ideation, business planning, entrepreneurship, marketing, business communication, intellectual property and idea pitching. Business facilitation covers pre-feasibility studies, project appraisal, market research and techno-commercial studies.

Mentoring and equity

Each incubated company selects one faculty member from the institute as its mentor. The page says the company must offer at least 1% of its share equity to that mentor. A company may also select an industry mentor within six months of joining, with the same minimum 1% equity. The centre says its mentor pool includes senior faculty, industry people and business consultants, and that business modelling, business plan preparation, finance and legal support are part of the mentoring programme.

Funding

The centre says it may provide seed loans, subject to the availability of funds, grants or schemes for that purpose. Admission does not automatically entitle a company to a seed loan. A company may apply for seed funding after three months of incubation, and the loan is decided on the centre's eligibility criteria and seed funding guidelines. The page also lists cash support, grant support advisory from funding services, and access to venture and angel networks.

The IDEA Lab

The institute also runs an AICTE IDEA Lab, an innovation hub for design thinking, prototyping and entrepreneurship among students and faculty. It was set up with financial support from AICTE under its IDEA Lab Scheme, and with industry sponsorship from Eurofins IT Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. Its activities include hackathons, ideathons and competitions, and industry interaction and mentorship sessions.

Who can apply

The centre's stated purpose is students and faculty of the institute. The page does not say whether founders from outside the college can join, and it states no geographic rule. Founders who are not students or faculty should ask the centre before applying.

Who runs it

Dr. Raju Hazare is Dean, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Prof. Archana K and Prof. Mahalakshmi S hold the chief and deputy coordinator roles for the Innovation Centre and for the Incubation Centre and Entrepreneurship Development Cell, with Ms. Shama H M as coordinator for the Innovation Centre.
