The Defence India Startup Challenge is the main iDEX route in. It was launched by the Ministry of Defence in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission to support startups, MSMEs and innovators in creating prototypes or commercialising products for national defence and security. Each edition carries problem statements from the Armed Forces and other nodal agencies. Edition 14 was launched in March 2026 with 82 problem statements and closed on 4 May 2026. No edition is open as of October 2026.

ADITI is a sub-scheme of iDEX for critical and strategic defence technologies at an early stage of research and development. It carries a much higher grant ceiling than DISC and a longer development timeline. Editions so far include ADITI 1, ADITI 2 with its re-opened rounds, ADITI 3 and ADITI 4. ADITI 4 was launched in March 2026 with 25 problem statements and closed on 4 May 2026, and none is open as of October 2026. The scheme document covers budget support for 2023-24 to 2025-26 only, and the site does not say what funds later rounds. The second edition covered areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, military communication and anti-drone systems.

DIO's help pages name only DISC, ADITI and Open Challenge as current categories, so Prime is listed on the portal but not in that list.

SPARK grant-in-aid

SPARK, the Support for Prototype and Research Kickstart in Defence, is how iDEX pays winners. It is not a separate application. A startup becomes eligible for grant-in-aid once it is declared a winner under DISC, ADITI, the Open Challenge or another iDEX challenge.

Equity: DIO states it takes no equity or ownership in the startup or MSME. Another page on its site describes funding as being in the form of equity or other relevant structures. Read the grant agreement before you accept.

चयन और फंडिंग कैसे काम करते हैं

ADITI, यानी Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX, महत्वपूर्ण और रणनीतिक तकनीकों के लिए iDEX की एक उप-योजना है। इसमें DISC की तुलना में कहीं ऊँची अनुदान सीमा और लंबी विकास-समयसीमा होती है। इसका चौथा संस्करण, 25 समस्या-विवरणों के साथ, DISC 14 के साथ ही लॉन्च हुआ और उसी दिन बंद हुआ। Open Challenge में आवेदक स्वयं समस्या चुनते हैं और सेवाओं, किसी रक्षा PSU या किसी अन्य नोडल एजेंसी की ज़रूरत के लिए प्रस्ताव भेजते हैं। DISC और ADITI के समस्या-विवरण केवल एक तय अवधि के लिए खुले रहते हैं।

कौन आवेदन कर सकता है
DISC और Open Challenge तीन प्रकार के आवेदकों को स्वीकार करते हैं: भारत सरकार द्वारा मान्यता प्राप्त स्टार्टअप्स, कंपनीज़ एक्ट के तहत निगमित भारतीय कंपनियाँ जो मुख्यतः MSMEs हैं, और व्यक्तिगत नवप्रवर्तक। शोध और शैक्षणिक संस्थान व्यक्तिगत श्रेणी के अंतर्गत आवेदन कर सकते हैं। स्टार्टअप में भारतीय हिस्सेदारी बहुमत में होनी चाहिए। संयुक्त उद्यम और कंपनियों के कंसोर्टियम आवेदन नहीं कर सकते, और प्रोटोटाइप के लिए कोई न्यूनतम तकनीकी तत्परता स्तर (TRL) नहीं है।
ADITI पर भी यही इकाई-नियम लागू होते हैं, लेकिन कुछ अतिरिक्त शर्तों के साथ। चयनित व्यक्तिगत नवप्रवर्तक को बाद में स्टार्टअप या MSME के रूप में पंजीकरण कराना होता है। हर ADITI चुनौती में अधिकतम दो विजेताओं को सहायता मिलती है, एक आवेदक एक समय में केवल एक ADITI चुनौती जीत सकता है, और पिछली ADITI चुनौती बंद होने के बाद ही नई पर विचार होता है।
फंडिंग कैसे काम करती है
चुनौती के विजेताओं को Support for Prototype and Research Kickstart in Defence (SPARK) के तहत अनुदान-सहायता (grant-in-aid) मिलती है। संस्थापकों को SPARK के लिए अलग से आवेदन नहीं करना होता। स्टार्टअप को विजेता घोषित होने के बाद पात्रता मिलती है। ग्रांट समझौते के तहत धनराशि छह माइलस्टोन-आधारित किस्तों में जारी होती है, और अनुदान प्राप्तकर्ता को उत्पाद विकास बजट का कम से कम आधा मिलान योगदान देना होता है। यह योगदान नकद, पिछले खर्च या इन-काइंड के रूप में हो सकता है। DIO अनुदान प्रबंधन और निगरानी देखता है, जबकि साझेदार इन्क्यूबेटर व्यवसायिक सहायता, मेंटरिंग और स्टार्टअप सुविधा प्रदान करता है।
