The Department of Pharmaceuticals is a department under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India. Created on July 1, 2008, the department was established to provide greater focus for the growth of India's high-potential pharmaceutical industry, one of the largest in the world.
The department is entrusted with the responsibility of policy formulation, planning, development, and regulation of the pharmaceutical sector, including drugs, pharmaceuticals, and related industries. It oversees public sector undertakings in the pharmaceutical space and formulates policies to strengthen India's position as the "pharmacy of the world."
The department manages regulatory frameworks including drug pricing, production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and bulk drug parks to reduce import dependency and boost domestic manufacturing capabilities. It is headquartered at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi.
