Techtonic is Social Alpha's recurring scouting and challenge platform, run in themed editions. The current edition, Innovations for Sustainability, looks for start-ups working across the energy transition, new materials and natural resources.

This edition of Techtonic focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean-energy access across the energy lifecycle, with a special focus on energy for livelihoods, smart energy systems, energy storage and thermal comfort. It is closed to new applications.

Who it was for: Start-ups solving critical bottlenecks in India's energy value chain.

The Atal Incubation Centre at Social Alpha was set up under NITI Aayog's Atal Innovation Mission to give early-stage start-ups end-to-end support on their lab-to-market journey, with a focus on five areas: energy transition, circular economy, health and wellness, mobility and sustainable construction. Start-ups join through specific grand challenges (past ones include the India Clean Air Challenge, Pfizer INDovation, and Techtonic editions on waste management and clean energy) or through lateral entry.

Who can apply: Early-stage start-ups and entrepreneurs with market-creating innovations in the AIC's focus sectors, usually onboarded through a specific grand challenge.

The SpaceTech Innovation Network is Social Alpha's platform for start-ups applying space science and technology to sectors such as aviation, maritime and land transport, mapping, disaster management and agriculture. It is supported by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

What you get

• Access to syndicated capital pools and a network of mentors
• Market-access programmes, workshops, co-founder clinics and international collaborations

Who can apply: Start-ups and early-stage entrepreneurs with science and technology innovations applying space technologies, in either a Foundational Technologies or Downstream Applications category. The programme runs up to 12 months depending on the innovation's stage.

How selection works: Applications are reviewed every quarter by the SpIN Selection Committee; shortlisted applications go before a Grand Jury to form the cohort.

mach33.aero is Social Alpha's platform for innovation and entrepreneurship in aviation, aerospace, space-tech and related emerging technologies, run jointly with CSIR's National Aerospace Laboratories from its Industry Interface Building in Bengaluru.

What you get

• Mentorship and expert guidance
• Early-stage funding through grant and equity capital pools
• Product testing and validation using labs, software and test beds
• Market access and connects, plus shared administrative and operational support

Who can apply: Deep-tech start-ups in aviation, aerospace and space-tech.

Social Alpha hosts a seed fund under the Department of Science and Technology's National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) Seed Support System. It provides financial assistance for technology and product development, testing, marketing, mentoring, professional consultancy and IP-related costs, with no equity taken.

Who can apply: Start-ups registered in India (preferably DPIIT-registered), with at least 51% Indian promoter shareholding, that have been associated with Social Alpha's resident or virtual incubation programme for at least three months and have a validated customer proposition. It cannot be used to repay loans, create personal assets, or benefit promoters personally, and applicants must not have already received NIDHI seed support from another DST-supported incubator.

How selection works: Applications are evaluated and monitored by the NIDHI-Seed Support Management Committee.

The CEIBIC CleanTech Challenge's first cohort is closed to new applications. It looked for clean-energy innovators across the full energy lifecycle — smart appliances, clean cooking, rooftop solar, electric vehicles, grids and storage — with preference given to start-ups registered in Kerala or willing to set up there.

What participants got

• Access to innovation labs for prototyping and testing at the Energy Management Centre in Trivandrum and the Clean Energy International Incubation Centre in Delhi
• A pilot implementation grant, plus the opportunity to pitch for equity investment
• Office space at the Energy Management Centre in Trivandrum, shared services and digital service credits

Who it was for: Innovators in a Pre-Pilot category (early-stage, proof of concept) or a Post-Pilot category (working prototype through to market-ready), preferably registered in Kerala.

Krishi Mangal is a joint initiative between Social Alpha and Cisco CSR that began in 2021 to strengthen smallholder farmers' resilience. It has supported start-ups in soil restoration, efficient irrigation, decentralised processing and circular waste management. The third edition broadens the scope to deep-tech innovations for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

• Business-model validation sprints and go-to-market strategy support
• Access to innovation labs for product development and testing
• Mentor engagement and funding access, subject to due diligence
• Preferred deals and credits on legal, IP, accounting, HR and marketing services
• Fundraising support, including pitch-deck preparation

Who can apply: Start-ups innovating for smallholder-farmer resilience across agriculture and allied rural sectors.

Social Alpha runs two fellowship tracks alongside its incubation programmes. The Entrepreneur-in-Residence programme brings in individuals from any background — corporate, government, scientific or entrepreneurial — to work with research institutions and commercialise existing deep-science lab innovations. Entrepreneurs for Impact (E4i), described as Social Alpha's flagship fellowship, is a hands-on, experiential programme for people who want to become entrepreneurs: it takes them from observing problems on the ground, through validating a theory of change and building prototypes, to developing a preliminary business plan and, where a good fit exists, forming a co-founding team.

Who can apply: For EIR, individuals from any background with a strong belief they can help India tackle social, economic or environmental challenges. E4i is aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs-in-the-making rather than existing start-up founders.
