The Global Youth Institute is the Foundation’s annual conference for students. Delegates selected from the Youth Institutes share key findings and recommendations from their research with international experts and their peers in roundtable discussions. The Foundation says nearly 4,000 student delegates have attended since 1994.
Who can apply
- High-school students selected as delegates from a state or national Youth Institute.
How to apply: Selection runs through a Youth Institute. The 2026 conference is on 20 to 22 October 2026.

Youth Institutes are where students present their food-security research. The Foundation co-hosts 40 of them across Honduras, Kenya, the Netherlands, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sweden, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States, in partnership with major agricultural universities. Its pages say more than 2,000 students present each year.
Iowa Youth Institute is for eighth to twelfth-grade students and is held in Ames, Iowa. It has no registration fee, and meals are provided. Participants arrange their own transport. The next institute is on 7 April 2027.
Florida Youth Institute is for eleventh and twelfth-grade students and is held in Gainesville, Florida. A registration fee applies, and the date is not yet set.
Who can apply
- Students who write a three-to-five page research paper on a country and a food-security topic.
How to apply: The Iowa registration and paper deadline is 24 March 2027. Participants are recognised as Borlaug Scholars, the Foundation says.
An unpaid international internship of at least eight weeks, with no fee to apply or take part. Applications for 2027 have not opened yet.

The Borlaug-Ruan International Internship places students at agricultural research and development organisations abroad. The Foundation says it has placed 460 students since 1998, in countries including India, Brazil, Kenya and China. The Foundation and host organisations provide an intern research project, weekly mentorship and supervision, specialised training, virtual tours and cultural immersion.
The internship is unpaid. Interns commit to a full-time placement of at least eight weeks in summer 2027, and do not return home except in an emergency.
Who can apply
- Its internship page describes eligibility as having taken part in, volunteered for or otherwise been involved with a Foundation programme.
- Age: the internship page says applicants must be 17 or older on 1 June 2027. The application page says between 17 and 20 on that date. The two pages do not agree.
How to apply: Applications for 2027 have not opened yet. The page says they will open soon.
USDA Wallace-Carver Fellowship

Applications for the USDA Wallace-Carver Fellowship are closed until further notice.
The fellowship gave college students paid placements with noted scientists and policymakers at USDA research centres and offices across the United States. It was initiated in 2011 by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack, and the USDA and the Foundation partnered to create it.

The World Food Prize is presented each October on or around UN World Food Day (16 October), at a ceremony during the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue. The award recognises contributions in any field involved in the world food supply, from plant, animal and soil science to food processing, economics, policy and public advocacy. Laureates receive a cash award and a sculpture designed by Saul Bass.
Who can apply
- Nominations only. A nominee must be living and able to attend the ceremony, give an acceptance speech, and take part in selected media events and the Global Youth Institute.
