How to apply to Bhau Institute of Innovation
Choosing the right programme
- Start with the incubation model if you have an idea and need mentoring. The fellowships pay a monthly stipend, so check the state and community rules first.
- Check each scheme's status before you plan around it. Several are closed or have a fixed deadline.
- Read the eligibility lines for age, domicile, degree and caste or category before you start a form. Those rules are strict and are not waived.
How applications work
- Incubation models: apply through the institute's website. There is no registration fee for applying.
- Fellowships: apply through the link on each programme page, and attach the documents listed there, such as domicile, caste and non-creamy-layer certificates where asked.
- Keep a pitch deck ready. The institute and the fellowship forms both ask for one.
How selection works
- Incubation: application, shortlisting, then a first idea pitch before a place is offered.
- Fellowships: selection follows the scheme's own process, and selected fellows report monthly progress.
What reviewers look for
- Whether the idea can become a technology business within a year.
- Whether the founder can commit full time, since parallel income is barred under most schemes.
- Fit with the institute's focus areas: IoT, AI and ML, healthcare technology, cyber security, EV and smart mobility, agritech, renewable energy and grassroots innovation.
- Team strength and the potential for patents or new products.
About Bhau Institute of Innovation
COEP's Bhau Institute of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership is a startup incubation centre in Pune, Maharashtra. It is hosted by COEP Technological University, which is based at Shivajinagar, and it was incorporated as a not-for-profit company in 2017. Its name means elder brother, and it sees its role as giving founders just enough mentoring to get started and then letting them run their own companies.
How programmes work
The institute offers four incubation models. Pre-incubation takes an idea from validation to a detailed business plan. Virtual incubation suits founders who cannot relocate, and it still requires an in-person review about once every 2 months. Physical incubation is selective and intensive, with structured training, targeted mentoring and access to the institute's network. Incubation Lite lets early-stage founders use the facilities at a nominal fee while they validate a plan.
Beside these, the institute runs fellowship schemes that pay a monthly stipend for a fixed period, for example the AMRUT-BHAU and SARTHI-BHAU programmes. It also runs schemes funded by central and state bodies, including NIDHI-PRAYAS for prototyping and the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.
Who can apply
Application to the incubation models is open to founders with an idea, a prototype or an early company. Mid-career professionals working on a venture on the side are encouraged to apply. An already funded startup is also eligible, though its terms may differ. Virtual and pre-incubation can support founders who are not based in Pune.
The state fellowships are limited to Maharashtra residents and to specific communities, and each has its own rules on age, degree and income. The national schemes set their own criteria, which are covered in the programme sections below.
Facilities
Incubatees get internet and office utilities, meeting and conference rooms, software and machine tools, an analytics database, and access to COEP's labs and resources.
Scale
The institute's April to June 2026 newsletter reports 403 startups supported, 76 currently incubated, 248 graduated and 113 startups funded, along with 1500+ jobs generated. These are the institute's own self-reported figures. Its startup portfolio page uses a different headline count of 350 or more, so read the numbers as orders of magnitude.
Who runs it
The institute works with angel and venture investors and industry partners. It is recognised as a Maharashtra-supported technology business incubator.
Locations
