Is this the right door?

How applications work

• Each want has its own application link into an Open Innovation portal run by an outside firm.
• When we checked in October 2026, the portal address linked from HUL's page did not load, so a submission could not be made through that link. Try again when you apply, and if it still fails, HUL's contact page is the fallback.
• The page does not state an application deadline, a review timeline or what happens after you submit.

What reviewers look for

• A practical innovation that meets the stated need. The page says HUL is looking for anyone with a practical innovation that helps it meet its challenges.
• Fit with the conditions in the want. For the natural-compounds want, that includes material free of known toxic substances, sensitisers, high heavy metals and carcinogens, with non-GMO material preferred.
• Material you can supply for testing, where the want asks for it.

• Write down which want you are answering and what you can supply or show.
• Do not assume equity, grant or pilot terms. HUL's page states none, so ask before sharing anything you want protected.

Hindustan Unilever Limited, usually called HUL, is a fast-moving consumer goods company headquartered at Unilever House in Andheri (East), Mumbai. It is not an incubator or a grant-maker. For founders, its route in is Open Innovation, a scheme run by HUL's R&D organisation that invites outside innovators, start-ups explicitly included, to submit technical solutions to problems the company has posted.

How Open Innovation works

HUL's R&D team publishes a list of challenges and wants. Each one describes a specific technical need. An outside party with a matching idea, product or material sends in a technical solution for that want through an Open Innovation portal. HUL says it will consider partnerships with established suppliers, start-ups, academics, designers and individual inventors, in its words anyone with a practical innovation that can help it meet its challenges.

This is a technology-scouting route, not a cohort. The page does not describe a fixed intake window, a mentoring track, a demo day or a funding round, and it does not say whether HUL takes equity. Treat it as a way to put a specific technical solution in front of the company's R&D team.

What HUL is looking for

The wants listed on HUL's page lean towards ingredient, formulation and packaging science. Two examples show the range.

One want asks for external suppliers that hold libraries of functional natural and botanical-derived compounds, extracts or products that HUL can test. Material with known toxicity, sensitisers, high heavy metals, carcinogens or other special handling needs is ruled out. Non-GMO material is preferred, as are high-volume, cosmetic or food-grade materials.

Another want seeks new routes to better-quality post-consumer recycled plastic.

The list changes over time, so check the Open Innovation page for the wants that are open when you apply.

Who can apply

The page sets no stage, incorporation or location condition. The only stated filter is having a practical innovation that fits a posted want. A start-up working on natural ingredients, formulation chemistry, packaging materials or recycling is a closer fit than a software or marketing-tech team, because the listed wants are about materials and products rather than software.
