About BIIC incubation (under the BIIC Incubation Policy)

This is BIIC's one standing offer, and it runs off a published Incubation Policy rather than a cohort. There is no call, no intake window and no online form — applications go to the BIIC Executive Committee whenever you are ready, in a prescribed format the centre has to send you.

Who can apply

  • Students on Mahatma Gandhi University's regular graduate and undergraduate courses.
  • Research scholars of Mahatma Gandhi University.
  • Grass-root level innovators, including farmers and other individuals.
  • Nobody else. The policy names these three groups and no other, and there is no route published for a founder from outside the university.

What you get

  • Office space, computers, printers, an internet connection, and basic electricity and water.
  • Facilitated access to Mahatma Gandhi University's infrastructure and laboratories, on the university's own norms — in-house student rates for MGU students and PhD scholars, external rates for grass-root innovators.
  • A faculty advisor as your mentor on technology, plus professionals, faculty and industry people BIIC has empanelled.
  • A strategy review with the head of BIIC once in two months.
  • Financial support is possible but discretionary: the policy says it depends on funds being available, is decided case by case, and that an applicant has no right to claim any of it.

The terms

  • Three years, after which you vacate the premises.
  • Space is charged monthly, at a lower rate for MGU students than for grass-root innovators, minimum three years.
  • No equity is taken. Instead you share five per cent of profit with BIIC for the ten years after incubation, into a fund it uses to run the incubator.
  • You need BIIC's prior approval to raise capital from outside, and for any substantial change in your shareholding.
  • Regular PG, MPhil and PhD norms are unchanged for a student who uses the incubator, including course completion, the degree and fellowships.

How selection works: you file the application with a detailed project report — the business, your core team and promoters, three-year profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow projections, your funding requirement and how you would raise it, and the support you want from BIIC. You then present the project to the Executive Committee, which evaluates the documents and the presentation and decides. The committee is the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, the Finance Officer, the Director of the IQAC, the directors of the Schools of Biosciences, Pure and Applied Physics, Computer Sciences and Chemical Sciences, and BIIC's Director.

How to apply: there is no online form. Write to biic@mgu.ac.in or phone the centre during office hours and ask for the prescribed application format and who is handling admissions. The "Get a Support" links on BIIC's website do not lead anywhere.
