The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) operates under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. Originally formed in 1999 under the Ministry of Rural Development, it became the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2011 before being merged into the newly created Ministry of Jal Shakti in May 2019.
The department drives two flagship national missions: Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), which aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all rural households in India, and Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G), which works to maintain universal sanitation coverage across rural India. These programs represent some of the largest infrastructure development initiatives in the country.
The department is headquartered at Pandit Deendayal Antyodaya Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
