About HearstLab
HearstLab is a strategic corporate venture fund backed by Hearst, one of the largest information, services and media companies in the world. It invests in early-stage, women-led technology startups, with partner teams in several countries. Its listed application routes are the US, Europe, Japan and the GCC. India is not among them, so founders based in India should check the criteria before they apply.
How the fund works
HearstLab invests in Seed and Series A-stage companies across enterprise technology, data and analytics, fintech, healthcare, media and transportation. It describes itself as mission-focused, with the aim of closing the gap in venture capital funding for women. Unlike a traditional venture firm or incubator, it takes a founder-first, long-term view of helping founders build sustainable and profitable businesses.
Support and access
The in-house team supports founders across business development, marketing, data and operations, product and engineering, finance and fundraising, and legal. Business development covers warm introductions and go-to-market planning. Finance covers financial modelling, unit economics and warm investor introductions. Legal draws on Hearst's own legal team. The full support list is limited to US-based companies, and international companies receive support adapted to their location.
The founder community connects women founders, with mentorship and workshops from industry experts. Founders also get in-person access to office space around the world, including the Hearst Tower in New York. The scout network brings women executives from across Hearst businesses into founders' work.
Who can apply
A company must be women-led. The criteria page sets the test as a female founder who is a decision maker with equal or majority of founder equity. The portfolio page describes its companies as exclusively women-owned and led. Both are stated, so read the criteria before applying.
The company must also be tech-enabled, meaning primarily B2B or B2B2C business models with a working product and demonstrated market validation. It must be strategically connected to Hearst, solving a problem that fits Hearst's core expertise.
HearstLab does not invest in companies that manufacture or sell a physical product, or in companies developing therapeutics, medical devices or Software as a Medical Device.
