About Luminate

Luminate is an accelerator and investment fund for startups building optics, photonics, imaging and laser-enabled technology. It is based at Sibley Square in downtown Rochester, New York, and the programme is administered by NextCorps. Its funding comes from Empire State Development's Finger Lakes Forward Initiative.

The programme is cohort-based and hybrid. Most of the work happens remotely, with one in-person week a month for meetings in Rochester and for investor pitches.

How the programme works

Accepted companies receive an investment at acceptance, structured as a convertible note, and become eligible for follow-on investment. The pages do not say whether the note converts into equity, so read the terms before you accept.

The programme covers business instruction, mentoring and investor access. Teams work through more than 50 workshops over the course of the cohort, covering topics such as design for manufacturing, bills of materials, import and export, government contracting, intellectual property, pitch coaching and valuations. Advisers from the programme's advisory board mentor teams one to one. Companies also get introductions to customers and to the supplier network in the Rochester region. The team also helps companies identify customers and manufacturing partners, so the programme is as much about commercial introductions as it is about investment.

Companies pitch to investors throughout the programme. The site lists over 30 pitch opportunities, and names corporate and investor audiences including Samsung, Sony, Corning, J&J and Launchpad Ventures Boston.

At the end of the programme, participants pitch at Luminate Finals and compete for a share of follow-on funding. Finals is free to attend in person or online. Finals also names a Company of the Year, which the site describes as a separate award.

The pages give different lengths for the programme. The apply and resources pages say six months, and the about page says seven months. Check the length with the programme team before you plan around it.

Who can apply

Luminate takes startups with optics, photonics, imaging or laser-enabled technology that is working to solve industry challenges. To qualify, a company must be incorporated, must have proven its technology at least at lab scale, must have a team of at least two people working on the business full-time, and must have C-level team members able to travel to Rochester.

The pages do not restrict applicants by country, and they do not mention India. The programme describes its founders as coming from around the world. The in-person requirement in Rochester applies to every cohort member, so factor the travel into your plans.

Facilities

Cohort members who can attend in person get working space in Sibley Square. They also get access to the NextCorps Prototyping Lab and to equipment and labs through local partners. The programme also names a Luminate Optical Lab.

Scale

The portfolio page lists 96 companies, of which 76 are shown as active investments. The page gives no date for these counts.

The region itself has a large optics base. The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, the American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics, and the Rochester Institute of Technology's imaging science programme are all in or around the city.
