What is GST Registration?

GST registration gives your business a GSTIN, a 15-character number that lets you charge GST, issue tax invoices and claim credit for GST paid on your purchases. It is done on the GST portal, gst.gov.in, and the government charges nothing for it.

You are not always required to register. Whether you must depends on your turnover, what you sell, where you sell it and how you sell it. Registering when you do not need to can add monthly filings you could have avoided. Not registering when you must can lead to penalties.

This guide helps you work out which side of that line you are on, and then walks through the application.

Who needs it

A supplier of goods whose aggregate turnover in a financial year goes above 40 lakh rupees, and a supplier of services whose turnover goes above 20 lakh rupees. Lower limits apply in some special category states.

Certain businesses must register whatever their turnover, including those who supply goods from one state to another, casual taxable persons, those who must pay tax under reverse charge, and e-commerce operators. Sellers on e-commerce platforms often need a GSTIN as well.

Anyone who wants to register voluntarily, for example to give business customers input tax credit or to open marketplace and enterprise accounts that ask for a GSTIN.

Aggregate turnover is calculated across India, for the same PAN, so a business with units in several states adds them together.

Eligibility

  • A PAN for the business or the proprietor is the starting point; GST registration is PAN-based, state by state.
  • A registered or intended business address in the state where you register.
  • A bank account in the business name (or the proprietor's name for a proprietorship).
  • A mobile number and email for OTP verification. Use a number you control for the long term.
  • An authorised signatory with Aadhaar, who can authenticate the application.

Step-by-step process

  1. 1

Check that you need to register

Compare your expected turnover with the limits above, and check the cases where registration is compulsory regardless of turnover. If you are unsure, ask before applying.

  2. 2

Part A: get a Temporary Reference Number

On the GST portal choose Register Now, enter the PAN, email and mobile number, and verify each by OTP. The portal issues a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).

  3. 3

Part B: fill in the application (Form REG-01)

Log in with the TRN. Enter business details, promoters or partners, the principal place of business, goods and services with their HSN or SAC codes, and bank details.

  4. 4

    Upload documents

Add the proofs from the checklist below. Use clear scans and make names and addresses match across documents.

  5. 5

    Authenticate and sign

Verify the application with Aadhaar authentication where it is offered, and sign with a digital signature certificate (companies and LLPs) or an e-signature or EVC (others).

  6. 6

Note the ARN and respond to any query

On submission the portal gives an Application Reference Number (ARN). Track it on the portal. If the officer needs clarification they raise it online; reply within the time given.

  7. 7

    Receive the GSTIN and certificate

When approved you receive the registration certificate and GSTIN. Display the certificate at your place of business and add the GSTIN to your invoices.

The rules set short windows for the officer to act, and they are shorter when Aadhaar authentication is completed. We do not promise a number of days because the officer can ask for clarification, and every query restarts part of the clock. A clean application with matching documents and a verifiable address is the best way to avoid queries.

Common mistakes and rejections

  • Registering in the wrong state, or at an address you cannot prove. The portal can reject or the officer can later cancel it.
  • Business name that differs from PAN. Names must match.
  • Choosing the wrong HSN or SAC codes. They drive the tax rate on your invoices.
  • Using a rent agreement without the owner's consent or without a recent utility bill.
  • Forgetting that e-commerce selling and inter-state supply of goods can force registration below the turnover limit.
  • Ignoring a notice from the officer. Unanswered queries lead to rejection.
  • Registering and then not filing. Registered businesses must file returns on time, even with nil sales.
  • Opting for the composition scheme and then discovering you need input tax credit for your customers.

After you are done

  • Start issuing GST-compliant tax invoices with your GSTIN.
  • Set up your return filings and know your due dates. Late filing has fees.
  • Keep the registration certificate displayed at your place of business.
  • Update the portal when you add a place of business, change a partner or change your bank account.
  • Link your GSTIN on your Udyam registration if you are an MSME.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a government fee for GST registration?

No. Registration on the GST portal is free. Third parties may charge to prepare your application.

What is the turnover limit for GST registration?

A supplier of goods must register once aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds 40 lakh rupees, and a supplier of services once it exceeds 20 lakh rupees. Lower limits apply in some special category states. Confirm the current figures on gst.gov.in.

Do I need GST registration if I sell on Amazon or Flipkart?

Sellers who supply through e-commerce operators may have to register even below the turnover limit, and platforms usually ask for a GSTIN. The exact rule depends on what you sell and where, so check the current notification for your case.

Can I register without a business address?

No. You need a principal place of business, with proof of the right to use it. Home addresses can work if you have the owner's consent and a recent utility bill.

How long does GST registration take?

The rules fix short windows for the officer to act, and the timing is faster when Aadhaar authentication is done. A query from the officer resets part of the process, so the answer depends on your application.

What is a GSTIN?

A 15-character number that identifies your business for GST in a given state. It includes your PAN.

Do I need a GSTIN in every state I sell to?

You need a registration in each state from which you supply, or where you have a place of business. Selling into a state does not by itself require a registration there.

What is the composition scheme?

An optional scheme with simpler returns for small suppliers, in exchange for giving up input tax credit and the ability to charge GST. Eligibility depends on turnover and other conditions; check the portal.
