Track record

What IIT Ropar Technology Business Incubator Foundation (TBIF) reports about its portfolio.

These are TBIF's own counters, published without dates or a source report. The home page reports more than three hundred startups incubated; the achievements page adds one hundred and twenty startups that have raised external capital, seventy-five given direct seed support, fifty-five graduated, and sixty-seven intellectual property filings with twenty-eight granted. The startup directory itself names roughly one hundred and ninety companies, which is the firmest number available. Treat the rest as claims.

300Startups supported"300+" on TBIF's own home-page counter, undated. Its startup directory names roughly one hundred and ninety companies.
180Mentors on panel"180+", described on one page as mentors, on another as faculty domain experts and on a third as a combined industry and faculty network, so what it counts is unclear.
28Patent familiesGranted intellectual property across the portfolio, with sixty-seven more reported as filed. Undated.

All figures self-reported — iitrpr.ac.in, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at IIT Ropar Technology Business Incubator Foundation (TBIF), separate from the funding calls above.

Incubation is the only route with a permanently open application, and it is documented thinly — no eligibility rules, selection steps, timeline or fee policy are published. The School of Entrepreneurship runs as dated course editions, and TBIF's named funding calls, PropelX and PropelX 2.0, are both closed. The home page also carries announcement links to open calls with no pages behind them; email the office to check whether one is still live before you spend time on it.

Rolling-intake incubation for deep-tech startups on the IIT Ropar campus, with lab and co-working space, mentorship, compliance support and introductions to government funding routes and investors.

Best for: Deep-tech founders, researchers and innovators building in manufacturing, defence, IoT, AI or healthcare, with no published restriction on who may apply

  • Not published; acceleration is described as a three-month cohort track
  • In person
  • Grant support for selected startups

With IIT Ropar, Zoho

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

TBIF's core offer is on-campus incubation for deep-tech teams working in manufacturing, defence, IoT, AI and healthcare. There is no published cohort calendar: an "Apply for Incubation" button runs across the site all year and opens an online application form, so applications are effectively rolling. Inside incubation the site names an acceleration track described as structured three-month cohort programmes, but publishes no separate dates or entry criteria for it.

What you get

  • Co-working desks, private cabins and conference rooms on the IIT Ropar campus, plus satellite office access at the PAN IIT Alumni Centre in Bangalore.
  • A design lab for hardware prototyping and testing, and use of IIT Ropar's research equipment at the institute's internal rates.
  • Access to the Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security at IIT Ropar for industry-academia projects and defence procurement work.
  • Mentorship from IIT faculty and industry experts, including industry veterans and senior army veterans.
  • IP, legal, compliance and chartered-accountant support, and computing and cloud infrastructure.
  • Introductions to government funding routes including the Startup Punjab seed fund and MSME schemes, and investor matching with venture funds and angel networks. Grant support is available to selected startups.
  • Help hiring interns and researchers from IIT Ropar, and Zoho for Startups software credits through a portal reserved for TBIF startups.

Who can apply

  • TBIF publishes no eligibility criteria for incubation. There is no stated incorporation, company-age, stage, domicile or DPIIT-recognition requirement.
  • Nothing on the site limits it to IIT Ropar students or staff; the incubator describes itself as serving founders, researchers and innovators locally and nationally.
  • Deep-tech work in manufacturing, defence, IoT, AI or healthcare is the stated focus, and the published portfolio leans towards defence, aerospace and hardware.

How selection works: not published. No screening steps, panel, timeline or decision criteria appear anywhere on the site, and no fee or equity policy is stated. Ask before you apply.

How to apply: open the "Apply for Incubation" button on the TBIF home page or portfolio page and complete the application form; you will need a Google account to open it. Questions go to the office inbox, tbioffice@iitrpr.ac.in.

Short certificate courses in entrepreneurship run by TBIF as dated editions, including a programme with EDC India and EmpowerHer for women leaders.

Best for: Aspiring founders and early-venture builders who want structured entrepreneurship teaching, and women leaders for the EmpowerHer edition

  • Idea – Prototype
  • Ten days and twelve sessions for the certificate programme; five days for EmpowerHer
  • In person
  • No equity

With EDC India

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

The School of Entrepreneurship is TBIF's teaching arm: short, structured courses for people building an entrepreneurial foundation rather than a funded startup. It is organised around three stages — learn, covering ideation and validation; build, covering execution and mentorship; and scale, covering growth and leadership. It runs as dated editions rather than a permanent open intake, and the editions listed so far have now passed, so check the page for the next one.

Two courses have been published. The Certificate of Entrepreneurship Program, run with EDC India, ran across ten days and twelve sessions with a three-day immersive block on the IIT Ropar campus. EmpowerHer, described as a programme for women leaders, ran as a five-day immersive course at the Global Skill Park campus in Bhopal.

What you get

  • Certificate of Entrepreneurship Program: sessions with mentors and angel investors, an investor-ready pitch deck and a finance module, legal and compliance frameworks, mock pitching with expert feedback, and an incubation opportunity at TBIF.
  • EmpowerHer: revenue-focused business models, branding and digital visibility, pricing and strategic finance, leadership and negotiation skills, and a guided final pitch showcase.

Who can apply

  • No eligibility rules are published beyond EmpowerHer being aimed at women leaders.
  • The courses suit people at idea stage or running an early venture who want structured teaching rather than incubation.

How selection works: not published — both courses link straight to a registration form rather than to a selection process.

How to apply: register through the link on the School of Entrepreneurship page for the edition you want. The certificate programme registers through EDC India's own site; EmpowerHer registers through its own form. Questions go to tbioffice@iitrpr.ac.in.

PropelX

Grant scheme

TBIF's named incubation and funding call, which has run twice and is currently closed between editions.

Best for: Startups looking for TBIF's named funding call rather than rolling incubation

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

PropelX is the name TBIF has used for its funding calls for startups. Two editions are in our catalogue — the first closed in November 2025 and PropelX 2.0 closed in February 2026 — and the second edition's application form no longer accepts responses. Nothing about PropelX appears on TBIF's current site, so there is no published eligibility list, selection process or timeline for a future edition.

How to apply: there is no open edition. Our listing for the last round shows what it asked for. In the meantime the standing incubation route stays open all year, and TBIF's office inbox, tbioffice@iitrpr.ac.in, is the place to ask whether another edition is planned.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

TBIF describes around twenty thousand square feet of labs, co-working and prototyping space on the IIT Ropar campus, plus satellite access in Bangalore. Two of the most useful items belong to the institute rather than the incubator and are reached through it: IIT Ropar's research equipment at internal rates, and the Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security.

Co-working space

Open desks on the IIT Ropar campus, part of a facility TBIF describes as around twenty thousand square feet of labs, co-working and prototyping space. Satellite office access is also offered at the PAN IIT Alumni Centre in Bangalore.

Private cabins and conference rooms

Dedicated office space for scaling teams, plus meeting rooms with large displays and AV systems for pitching, a printing station and a round-the-clock pantry.

Design Lab

Prototyping lab for hardware building and testing.

IIT Ropar research equipment

Access via IIT Ropar

Incubatees can use the institute's advanced equipment at IIT Ropar's internal rates. TBIF also offers access to the Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security at IIT Ropar for industry-academia projects and defence procurement work. Both belong to the institute and are reached through the incubator.

Support services

Help offered alongside funding and space.

IP & patents

IP support alongside legal, compliance and chartered-accountant help, listed as a standing benefit of incubation. Twenty-eight granted and sixty-seven filed intellectual property items are reported across the portfolio.

Legal & finance

Support with legal and financial compliance for incubated startups.

Business advisory

Mentorship from IIT Ropar faculty and industry experts, described as including industry veterans and senior army veterans. Computing and cloud infrastructure and Zoho for Startups software credits come with incubation.

Market access

Introductions to government funding routes including the Startup Punjab seed fund and MSME schemes, investor matching with venture funds and angel networks, and help hiring interns and researchers from IIT Ropar.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

TBIF claims one credential and states it clearly: a Section 8 non-profit set up under the Department of Science and Technology's NIDHI-TBI scheme, hosted at IIT Ropar. It claims no Atal Incubation Centre status, no DPIIT recognition for itself, and no BIRAC, MeitY or state recognition. The Ministry of MSME and Startup Punjab appear on its partner wall and as funding routes it can point startups at, not as recognitions it holds.

DST NIDHI-TBI technology business incubator

TBIF states on its own about page that it is a Section 8 not-for-profit set up under the NIDHI-TBI scheme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and the same claim appears on an institute-hosted recruitment notice on TBIF letterhead. The site does not publish the funding period of that grant, so whether the support is current cannot be told from it. No Atal Incubation Centre, DPIIT, BIRAC, MeitY or state-government recognition is claimed for TBIF itself.

How to apply to IIT Ropar Technology Business Incubator Foundation (TBIF)

Pick the right route in

  • You want incubation: use the "Apply for Incubation" button on the TBIF site. It is live all year and is the only standing route in. You will need a Google account to open the form.
  • You are not ready to apply yet: watch the School of Entrepreneurship courses. The certificate programme run with EDC India names an incubation opportunity at TBIF among its outcomes, and the EmpowerHer course is aimed at women leaders. Both run as dated editions, so check when the next one opens.
  • You are building in defence or deep hardware: this is where TBIF's published portfolio and its own write-ups concentrate, and the incubator points startups at the Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security at IIT Ropar. A defence call has also run with DRIF.
  • You are looking for a specific past call: PropelX and PropelX 2.0 were TBIF funding calls and both are closed. Check our listing pages for what they asked for, and watch for a next edition rather than submitting to an old form.

Before you apply

TBIF does not publish eligibility rules, selection steps, timelines or fees for incubation. That means two things. First, do not assume you are ineligible — there is no published incorporation, stage, sector, age or state requirement, and nothing limits it to IIT Ropar students or staff. Second, do not assume anything is settled: ask the office what stage they take, what the incubation agreement involves, whether any equity or fee applies, and how long selection takes. The office inbox is tbioffice@iitrpr.ac.in, and a second address, tbif@iitrpr.ac.in, sits behind the same contact link. Marketing and CSR queries go to pr.tbif@iitrpr.ac.in.

What to put in front of them

The incubator describes itself as bridging academic research and commercial markets, and its stated focus areas are manufacturing, defence, IoT, AI and healthcare. Its own success write-ups emphasise working products, contracts won and patents. So lead with the technology and its evidence — what you have built, what has been tested, any IP filed or granted, any pilot or procurement interest — rather than with market size. Sector-fit matters here more than polish.

Make the most of what comes with it

If you are accepted, several benefits are only worth something if you ask for them: IIT Ropar equipment at the institute's internal rates, access to the defence and security centre, interns and researchers from the campus talent pool, introductions to government funding routes such as the Startup Punjab seed fund and MSME schemes, investor matching, and Zoho for Startups software credits through a portal whose password is shared with TBIF startups. Raise these in your first weeks rather than at the end.

Practical notes

  • An older standalone web address for TBIF no longer works. Use the TBIF section of the IIT Ropar institute site.
  • Announcements on the home page link straight to forms with no dates or criteria behind them. If you find one relevant to you, apply and email the office to confirm it is still open.
  • The site's counters are self-reported and undated, and its mentor figure is described three different ways. Do not plan around them.
  • If you want to visit, TBIF is on the top floor, east wing, of the M. Visvesvaraya Block at IIT Ropar, Rupnagar.

About IIT Ropar Technology Business Incubator Foundation (TBIF)

IIT Ropar Technology Business Incubator Foundation (TBIF) is the technology business incubator hosted at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar in Rupnagar, Punjab. It describes itself as a Section 8 not-for-profit company set up under the NIDHI-TBI scheme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and it sits on the top floor of the M. Visvesvaraya Block on the IIT Ropar campus. It backs deep-tech founders, researchers and innovators, with stated focus areas of manufacturing, defence, IoT, AI and healthcare.

If you have been pointed at "the IIT Ropar incubator", check which body you mean. IIT Ropar hosts more than one. TBIF is the technology business incubator described here. iHub AWaDH — the IIT Ropar Technology and Innovation Foundation, the DST technology innovation hub for agriculture and water — is a separate organisation on the same campus, and TBIF lists AWaDH on its own partners page alongside outside bodies such as ICMR, NIELIT and TiE Chandigarh. The two run their own programmes, their own application routes and their own portfolios, so an application to one is not an application to the other.

One practical note before anything else: TBIF's old standalone web address no longer resolves, and archived captures of it show an unrelated commercial site, so the domain appears to have been lost some time ago. The live TBIF site now sits under the institute's own domain as a section of iitrpr.ac.in. If you find an older link in a directory or a news article, treat it as dead rather than as a different programme.

How programmes work

There is one standing route in: an "Apply for Incubation" button that appears across the site and opens an online application form. It has no published intake window, deadline or cohort calendar, so applications appear to be taken on a rolling basis. Inside incubation, the site names acceleration as a structured three-month cohort track, but does not publish separate cohort dates for it.

Alongside incubation, TBIF runs a School of Entrepreneurship: short, structured certificate courses rather than funding programmes. Two have been listed with dates — a Certificate of Entrepreneurship Program run with EDC India across ten days and twelve sessions, including an immersive block on the IIT Ropar campus, and EmpowerHer, a five-day programme for women leaders run at the Global Skill Park campus in Bhopal. Both listed dates have passed, so the courses look like recurring editions rather than a permanent open intake. The certificate course names an incubation opportunity at TBIF as one of its outcomes, which makes it a possible side door into the incubator for someone who is not yet ready to apply directly.

TBIF has also run named funding calls in the past, including PropelX and PropelX 2.0, both of which are in our own catalogue and both now closed. Its home page also carries a rotating announcement bar with open calls — a social innovation call around clean water and sanitation, and a defence startup call run with DRIF — but these are announcements linking straight to forms, with no programme pages, dates or eligibility rules behind them, so read them as leads to chase rather than documented programmes.

Who can apply

This is the weakest part of the published material, and it is worth knowing before you spend time on an application. TBIF publishes no eligibility criteria at all for incubation: no incorporation requirement, no domicile or Punjab-residency rule, no company age limit, no DPIIT-recognition requirement and no stage gate. Nothing on the site restricts incubation to IIT Ropar students or staff, and the incubator describes itself as strengthening the startup ecosystem locally and nationally. The selection process is not published either. If any of this matters to your plans, ask the office directly before applying rather than inferring it.

Facilities

The site describes around twenty thousand square feet of labs, co-working space and prototyping facilities. Named items are open co-working desks, private cabins for scaling teams, a design lab for hardware prototyping and testing, conference rooms with display and AV kit, a round-the-clock pantry and a printing station. There is also satellite office access at the PAN IIT Alumni Centre in Bangalore for startups that need a presence there.

Two of the more useful facilities belong to the host institute rather than to TBIF, and are reached through it: incubatees can use IIT Ropar's research equipment at the institute's internal rates, and can access the Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security at IIT Ropar for industry-academia projects and defence procurement work. Beyond space and equipment, TBIF lists mentorship from faculty and industry experts, IP, legal, compliance and chartered-accountant support, computing and cloud infrastructure, help hiring interns and researchers from IIT Ropar, introductions to government funding routes including the Startup Punjab seed fund and MSME schemes, investor matching with venture funds, and software credits through a Zoho for Startups partnership whose portal is password-protected for TBIF startups.

Scale and track record

TBIF publishes counters rather than dated reports, so treat the numbers as its own claims. Its home page reports more than three hundred startups incubated. Its achievements page adds one hundred and twenty startups that have raised external capital, seventy-five given direct seed support, fifty-five graduated, sixty-seven intellectual property filings and twenty-eight granted. A mentor figure of one hundred and eighty appears three times across the site, described once as mentors, once as faculty domain experts and once as a combined industry and faculty network, so it is not clear what it counts. None of these figures carries a date.

The startup directory names roughly one hundred and ninety companies. The ones TBIF writes about in its own words lean heavily towards defence, aerospace and hardware — precision electro-optics and surveillance, unmanned logistics, drones and robotics, armour and ballistic composites, specialised defence materials — alongside HR tech, consumer IoT and construction materials. If you are building in defence or deep hardware, this is the clearest signal on the site about where its attention goes.

Who runs it

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, chairs TBIF, and the team page lists Ms. Karuna Kanwar as Chief Executive Officer and Dr. Shray Pathak as Faculty In-Charge, with a small operating team covering partnerships, projects, marketing and startup support. The board of directors is drawn from IIT Ropar faculty. Worth noting: while the team page lists a serving CEO, the careers page has also advertised the Chief Executive Officer post with a March 2026 deadline, so leadership may be in transition.

Locations and events

TBIF operates from the IIT Ropar campus at Rupnagar, Punjab, with satellite access in Bangalore. It runs an annual E-Summit on campus alongside recurring pitch days, founder meetups, deep-tech symposiums, mentorship clinics, investor connects, a hackathon, a defence showcase and a women-founder event. It also keeps a careers page for its own hiring.
