What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
ABIS-TBI is one of the RKVY-RAFTAAR Agribusiness Incubators, sanctioned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and running since 2019. It works in yearly cohorts, and the incubator reports 131 beneficiaries so far. MANAGE, Hyderabad is the scheme's knowledge partner, and an R-ABI Incubation Committee reviews progress.
What you get
- A two-month training-cum-internship, with hands-on exposure to startups already working at the incubator, in the Student Orientation Program or the Agripreneurship Orientation Program
- Pre-seed grant support after finishing an orientation programme, to turn an idea into a prototype or product
- Seed-stage grant support under the Startup Agribusiness Incubation Programme, for commercialisation and scaling
Who can apply
- Incubatees of the incubator, assessed on consistent performance during the programme
- A registered legal entity in India, with at least two months of residency at the incubator through its programmes
- An Indian startup as defined by the government notification — not an Indian subsidiary of a multinational or foreign company
- A startup that has already been supported once cannot apply for a later round of seed support at any agribusiness incubator in the network
How selection works: the R-ABI Incubation Committee evaluates trainees and startups and decides who receives support; the incubator runs a final screening round for each cohort.
How to apply: calls open cohort by cohort — the Cohort VIII call for the orientation tracks ran through April 2026. Write to tbi-abis@tnau.ac.in to ask when the next cohort opens.
NIDHI Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR)

What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The Department of Science and Technology approved this fellowship at ABIS-TBI from 2020-21, and the incubator reports 31 people supported so far across rounds. It is run under NSTEDB's NIDHI umbrella and is meant to take the financial risk out of starting up.
What you get

- Office and co-working space at the incubator
- Structured mentorship and entrepreneurial guidance
- Feedback on the business idea and introductions to industry networks
Who can apply
- Indian citizens with valid government-issued proof
- Either four years of full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in science or engineering, or a three-year degree or diploma in science or engineering plus two years of full-time work experience
- Founders who will work on the venture full time and take no other pay or fellowship during the period
- Founders registered under pre-incubation or incubation at the incubator for the whole fellowship
How selection works: you need a formal business plan and a business presentation including your investment proposal. The programme prefers ideas with high technology uncertainty or a long gestation, ideas built on technology or IP from publicly funded research, and ideas with social impact. Ventures with little technology innovation, or less than six months from commercialisation, are discouraged from applying.
How to apply: apply to the incubator when a round opens — rounds 3, 4 and 5 have run — and write to tbi-abis@tnau.ac.in for the current round.

How to apply to ABIS-TBI, TNAU Coimbatore
Check the two hard filters first
ABIS-TBI supports agriculture and allied ventures only, and it extends services only to members who pay the membership fee. If your venture is not agri, or you are looking for free ad-hoc help without joining, this is not the right incubator. If it is agri, work out which of the four membership categories you fall into — individuals and students, firms and LLPs and FPOs and NGOs and SHGs, private and public limited companies, or multinational and foreign companies — because the registration form and the fees differ by category.
Pick the programme that matches your stage
- Only an idea, still studying or just out: the RKVY-RAFTAAR orientation tracks (SOP for students, AOP for others) are two-month training-cum-internship programmes at the incubator, and finishing one opens the door to pre-seed grant support.
- An idea but no working product: NIDHI-PRAYAS is the prototype route, and it comes with fab lab access rather than just money.
- Ready to work on your venture full time: the NIDHI Entrepreneur-in-Residence fellowship runs a year and expects you to drop other work and other fellowships.
- You already have an MVP: the Startup Agribusiness Incubation Programme is the seed track, and the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme is the other route if you are DPIIT recognised.
- Spice processing or value addition: the Spices Incubation Centre takes a small number of startups per round.
How applications work
Membership starts with the category-wise registration form from the incubator's members page. The RKVY-RAFTAAR programmes open cohort by cohort with dated calls — the Cohort VIII orientation call ran through April 2026, so watch for the next one rather than applying at random. For the seed fund scheme you apply on the national Startup India seed fund portal and name ABIS-TBI, TNAU as your preferred incubator; for the spices programme you submit directly to the incubator. Questions can go to tbi-abis@tnau.ac.in, and the office keeps normal working hours with a half day on Saturday.
How selection works
Every funded programme here ends in a committee. RKVY-RAFTAAR support is decided by the R-ABI Incubation Committee on the basis of consistent performance during the programme, not on the application alone. Seed fund applicants pitch to the Incubator Seed Management Committee. Spice startups are screened technically and then pitch to the Incubation Appraisal Committee. The residence fellowship expects a formal business plan and a business presentation including your investment proposal.
What reviewers look for
The fellowship page is the most explicit: it prefers ideas with real technology uncertainty or a long gestation, ideas built on technology or IP from publicly funded research, and ideas with social impact, and it openly discourages ventures with little technology innovation or that are less than six months from commercialisation. Across programmes, expect to show that the venture is registered in India, that the innovation is yours, and that you can be present at the incubator — residency at the incubator is an eligibility condition for the seed track, not a formality.
Use what membership actually unlocks
Beyond grants, membership gets you testing and validation at TNAU laboratories at concessional rates, licensing of TNAU technologies through a signed agreement, patent, trademark and branding support, in-house office space, and shelf space in the incubatee product promotion centre. Founders who plan for those from day one get more out of a year here than founders who only chase the grant.
About ABIS-TBI, TNAU Coimbatore
ABIS-Technology Business Incubator is the agribusiness incubator of the Agribusiness Incubation Society, run from the Directorate of Agribusiness Development at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. The society has been working there since 2011 with funding from the Department of Science and Technology, and it supports agripreneurs, farmers, student entrepreneurs and agri companies. It is usually written as ABIS-TBI, TNAU, and it keeps its own site separate from the university's.
The incubator is narrow by design. It states plainly that it supports only agriculture and allied ventures, and that a non-agri venture will not get incubation here. The ventures it names are food processing, bio-inputs such as bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides, agri-biotech and tissue culture, AI and IoT work including vertical farming and agricultural drones, waste-to-wealth, mushroom, farm mechanization, eco-friendly and bio-degradable products, and renewable energy.
How programmes work
Five programmes run under ABIS. The RKVY-RAFTAAR Agribusiness Incubator, sanctioned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and operational since 2019, is the largest. It runs in yearly cohorts with three tracks: a Student Orientation Program and an Agripreneurship Orientation Program, both two-month training-cum-internship programmes with hands-on exposure to startups already at the incubator, and the Startup Agribusiness Incubation Programme for ventures that already have a minimum viable product. Trainees who finish the orientation programmes can go on to pre-seed grant support, and SAIP startups to seed-stage grant support. The incubator has run cohorts from 2019-20 onwards; the Cohort VIII call for the orientation tracks was open through April 2026.
The DST NIDHI Entrepreneur-in-Residence programme has run here since 2020-21. It is a one-year fellowship for graduating students and early professionals who want to work on a business idea full time, with mentorship, office and co-working space and monthly fellowship support. Rounds 3, 4 and 5 are listed on its page.
NIDHI-PRAYAS has run since 2023, funded by NSTEDB at the Department of Science and Technology. It backs innovators who have an idea but no working product yet, with prototype funding and a fabrication lab to build in.
ABIS-TBI is also an approved incubator under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, which means it screens and selects startups, disburses the seed fund and monitors milestones. And since 2024-25 it has been recognised as a Spices Incubation Centre funded by the Spices Board of India, which supports a small number of spice-processing and value-addition startups each round.
Alongside its own programmes, the incubator acts as a programme or knowledge partner for other government schemes: PMFME with One District One Product, the EDII-TN Innovation Voucher Programme, the Ambedkar Social Innovation and Incubation Mission, StartupTN's TANSEED, TN-AGRISNET and the World Bank supported TN IAM irrigated agriculture project. For TANSEED 6.0 it was a programme management partner and evaluated 143 applications, of which 36 reached the finale in June 2024.
Who can apply
You do not have to be a TNAU student. Anyone with an innovative agri idea, or a product at R&D stage, can apply for membership, and membership runs in four categories: individuals without a registered company and students; firms, LLPs, FPOs and FPCs, NGOs and SHGs; private and public limited companies; and multinational or foreign companies. Each category has its own registration form, a one-time registration and membership fee and an annual renewal fee.
Two conditions matter before you start. The venture has to be in agriculture or an allied sector. And services go only to members who have paid the membership fee — the incubator says so directly, and it applies to office space, testing, licensing and the rest.
Individual programmes add their own rules. The seed fund scheme needs DPIIT recognition, incorporation within two years, an innovative technology-driven solution and at least 51 per cent Indian promoter shareholding. The residence fellowship needs Indian citizenship and either a four-year science or engineering degree or a three-year degree or diploma with two years of work experience, full-time commitment, no other fellowship at the same time, and registration at the incubator for the whole period. The RKVY-RAFTAAR seed track needs a registered Indian legal entity with at least two months of residency at the incubator, and a startup supported once cannot come back for another round at any agribusiness incubator in the network.
Facilities
The incubator gives members in-house office space at TNAU Coimbatore for an infrastructure usage fee, with broadband and Wi-Fi, and a co-working space attached to the fellowship programme. It has a food packaging laboratory, which it says is for packaging and not testing, and a dhal processing facility. The NIDHI-PRAYAS fab lab is the build space: a welding machine, digital multimeter, sensor and IoT kits, a quadcopter assembly kit, 3D printer, 3D scanner, bio printer, PCB milling and prototyping machines, a retort pouch packaging machine and a workstation, with a slot booking option. The Spices Incubation Centre has a UV-visible spectrophotometer for analysing spice extracts. There is a training hall, a conference hall and a video conferencing room, a techno park space for programmes, and an exhibition hall at the Directorate of Agri Business Development. Incubatees can also use TNAU's own laboratories for testing and validation at concessional rates, and can license TNAU technologies after signing an agreement.
Opened on 20 May 2024, the TBI Incubatee Product Promotional Centre is a retail-style space where incubatees keep their products on permanent display for visitors and buyers.
Scale
The incubator's own pages disagree on how many startups it has worked with: the home page says over 650, the about page over 620, and the members page counter says 300 startups among 600 members. The same counter block reports 80 individual entrepreneurs, more than 60 DPIIT-recognised startups among its members, 11 farmer producer organisations, 8 educational institutions and 7 banks enrolled. Programme-level numbers are firmer: 131 beneficiaries under RKVY-RAFTAAR and 31 under the residence fellowship. Its members list for 2025-26 names ventures in supply chain software, plant disease prediction with AI and IoT, agricultural drones, seaweed multiplication, bio-inputs, millet and coconut value addition, apiculture and testing labs.
Who runs it
A. V. Gnanasambandam is Managing Director and CEO. The incubator posts a running events feed — startup showcases at university events, class sessions for agriculture and agribusiness students, and pitch bootcamps in Coimbatore — which was still being updated in September 2026.
