Programmes they run
Standing programmes at Agri-Business Incubator of ICRISAT (ABI-ICRISAT), separate from the funding calls above.
Three routes, all reached through the same email address. The standing Business Incubation Services are open-ended and undated. The NIDHI Seed Support route is the funding route and has been closed since November 2022. BioNcube is the agri-biotech route, live as a unit but with nothing published about how to reach it. There is no working application form for any of them.
ICRISAT's standing incubation support for agricultural startups and agribusiness ventures, with no cohort, no deadline and no application form — you start it by email.
Best for: Agricultural startups and agribusiness ventures wanting advisory support, mentoring and network access
- MVP – Early revenue
- Not stated

What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
This is the incubator's open-ended offer, described on ICRISAT's Business Incubation page rather than run as a dated cohort. There is no intake to wait for and no form to fill: the published route is the AIP enquiry inbox.
What you get
- Business development guidance, and business planning and enterprise development frameworks
- Market research and analysis, consumer insights and value chain analysis
- Mentorship programmes, and access to the incubator's mentor and investor network
- Support with financial planning, investment readiness and access to funding opportunities
- Networking events and specialised training workshops
- Incubation facilities, scientific expertise and field facilities, as described for one portfolio company
Who can apply
- Agricultural startups, agribusiness ventures and aspiring entrepreneurs in the sector
- No incorporation requirement, geography rule or category gate is published, and nothing states whether a company registered outside India can be incubated — ask first
How selection works: not published.
How to apply: email icrisat.aip@icrisat.org, the address ICRISAT gives for incubation and entrepreneurship enquiries. The Business Incubation Portal link on ICRISAT's page does not work.
NIDHI Seed Support Programme at ABI-ICRISAT
Grant schemeThe incubator's seed support route for Indian ag-tech startups, backed by the Department of Science and Technology — two calls ran in 2022 and both are closed, with nothing newer announced.
Best for: Indian ag-tech startups at early revenue stage with product-market fit
- Early revenue
- Not stated
- No equity
With Department of Science and Technology, National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
Closed. ABI-ICRISAT opened two calls under the Department of Science and Technology's NIDHI Seed Support scheme, supported by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board. The first closed at the end of April 2022 and the second at the end of November 2022. ICRISAT has announced no call since. It is listed here because it is the only place the incubator has ever set out what it looks for, and because seed support may return.
What you get
- Seed support provided as debt at the prevailing repo rate, which ICRISAT presented as raising funds without equity dilution
- Incubation services for business development and scaling up
- Access to the incubator's mentor and investor network
- What ICRISAT called ecosystem service partner packages
Who can apply
- Indian startups working on innovative technologies or business models in the agri-food and allied sectors
- Early revenue stage, with product-market fit and a clear value proposition
How selection works: applicants were evaluated against the scheme's criteria, which ICRISAT never published.
How to apply: both calls are closed and their forms are gone. Email icrisat.aip@icrisat.org to ask whether seed support is open again before planning around it.
BioNcube of ICRISAT
IncubationA biotechnology incubation unit at ICRISAT whose establishment BIRAC supported through the Agri-Business Incubator — live as a unit, but with no page, intake or application route published.
Best for: Agri-biotech ventures working on transgenics, ag-biologicals or secondary agriculture
- Prototype – MVP
With BIRAC
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
BIRAC, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, supported the establishment of BioNcube of ICRISAT through ABI-ICRISAT and ICRISAT's Platform for Translational Research on Transgenic Crops. A current ICRISAT staff member is titled Manager of both the Agribusiness Incubator and Bio Ncube, so the unit exists today, but ICRISAT publishes nothing else about it — no page of its own, no intake and no form.
What you get
- Support described as running from developing the proof-of-concept through product development and commercialisation, using ICRISAT's technical capacities and facilities
Who can apply
- Ventures working on transgenics, ag-biologicals and secondary agriculture. No further eligibility rule is published.
How to apply: no route is published. Email icrisat.aip@icrisat.org and name BioNcube.
Labs & facilities
Equipment and space on campus.
Only an unspecified incubation centre is published. ICRISAT separately sells research services — genotyping and sequencing, phenotyping, grain quality assessment, soil and water analysis, food safety and aflatoxin testing, seed processing and a genebank — but no page says incubatees get access to them, so they are listed as the institute's services rather than the incubator's facilities.
Incubation centre
Named on ICRISAT's Business Incubation page with no size, location, equipment or access terms published.
Support services
Help offered alongside funding and space.
Business advisory
Business development guidance, business planning and enterprise development frameworks, financial planning and investment readiness, mentoring and training workshops.
Market access
Market research and analysis, consumer insights and value chain analysis, networking events and investor introductions.
Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
Every credential here rests on either an ICRISAT press release or a Department of Science and Technology list, not on a claim ICRISAT makes on its own pages. None of the sources states a funding period, so whether any of these designations is currently funded cannot be told.
DST-supported Technology Business Incubator· 2003
ICRISAT's own press releases say the incubator was established in 2003 with support from the Department of Science and Technology, and that its seed support calls were backed by DST's National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board. No ICRISAT page itself claims a TBI designation — the designation appears in DST's own list of Technology Business Incubators, which records the registered entity as 'Agri-Business Incubator of ICRISAT' at Patancheru, in the plain 'TBI' category rather than 'NIDHI-TBI'. That list carries no funding period, so whether the support is current cannot be told.
Listed by DST as an incubator with NIDHI Seed Support
ICRISAT announced two calls under DST's NIDHI Seed Support scheme, in April and November 2022, and DST's own list of incubators holding NIDHI Seed Support includes ICRISAT at Patancheru. Both calls closed in 2022 and no newer call has been announced, and neither the list nor ICRISAT states a period, so do not assume seed support is open.
BIRAC-supported BioNcube
Stated in an ICRISAT report of a webinar it hosted with BIRAC: BIRAC supported the establishment of BioNcube of ICRISAT through the Agri-Business Incubator and ICRISAT's Platform for Translational Research on Transgenic Crops. A current ICRISAT staff title confirms the unit is live. No period is stated.

How to apply to Agri-Business Incubator of ICRISAT (ABI-ICRISAT)
Start by emailing, because there is nothing else
There is no working application form for this incubator and no announced intake. The one route ICRISAT publishes is its incubation and entrepreneurship enquiry address, icrisat.aip@icrisat.org, given on both the Business Incubation page and the Agribusiness and Innovation Platform page. The Business Incubation Portal link on ICRISAT's own page is broken, and the incubator's old domain is parked, so do not waste time hunting for a portal.
Because a person reads your first email rather than a form, make it do the work of an application:
- Say what your company is registered as and where, and ask directly whether your entity type is eligible. ICRISAT publishes no eligibility rules at all.
- Say which stage you are at, with evidence. The only stage this incubator has ever named is early revenue with product-market fit.
- Say which part of agriculture you work in. If it is agri-biotech — transgenics, ag-biologicals, secondary agriculture — mention BioNcube by name, because that is a separate unit with its own manager.
- Ask what support is actually available right now, and on what terms. Nothing published states duration, fees, space or equity.
Choosing which route to ask about
Three routes exist on paper and they are not the same door.
The standing Business Incubation Services are open-ended and described in general terms — business development guidance, market research, mentorship, networking, training. Ask about these if you want advisory support and network access rather than money.
The NIDHI Seed Support route is the funding route, and it is closed. Two calls ran in 2022 and neither has been repeated in anything ICRISAT has published since. If seed support is what you need, ask whether the scheme is still active at ICRISAT before you build a plan around it — the Department of Science and Technology's own lists do not say for how long its incubators hold it.
BioNcube is the biotechnology route, backed by BIRAC. It is live as a unit but undocumented, so treat it as something to ask about, not something to apply to.
What this incubator has said it looks for
The closed 2022 calls are the only place ICRISAT has set out criteria, so they are the best guide available. The incubator said it wanted technology-driven startups in agriculture and allied sectors that fit its mission of food-secure and resilient drylands, at early revenue stage, with product-market fit and a clear value proposition, ready to accelerate commercialisation. Selection was described only as evaluation against the scheme's criteria, which were never published. Expect a conversation with scientists as much as with business staff: what one portfolio company was given is described as scientific expertise and field facilities alongside the usual incubation support.
Check before you commit
This is an incubator whose public information is thin and dated. Its startup counts come from 2022 and contradict each other. Its own website no longer exists. Confirm in writing what you will get, for how long, at what cost and on what terms before signing anything, and do not assume access to ICRISAT's research labs — those are separately sold institute services and nothing says incubatees get them.
About Agri-Business Incubator of ICRISAT (ABI-ICRISAT)
The Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) is the incubator at ICRISAT, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, at Patancheru near Hyderabad in Telangana. ICRISAT established it in 2003 with support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and it sits inside ICRISAT's Agribusiness and Innovation Platform (AIP), which the institute describes as its flagship innovation and agribusiness incubation initiative. ICRISAT itself is an international organisation and a research centre of the CGIAR consortium, not an Indian government body, and it runs no founder intake of its own — the incubator is the door.
A founder searching for this incubator will meet a confusing web trail, so it is worth being blunt about it. The only pages that work today are on the parent institute's site: a Business Incubation page under ICRISAT's services, and the Agribusiness Innovations and Nutrition theme pages that AIP belongs to. The incubator's own former domain has lapsed and now shows a domain-parking screen. The Business Incubation Portal that ICRISAT's own page links to returns a database error. The website that the Department of Science and Technology records for this incubator in its own incubator list no longer exists. There is no working application form anywhere. The one route in that ICRISAT publishes is an email address for incubation and entrepreneurship enquiries, given on both the Business Incubation page and the AIP theme page.
How programmes work
ICRISAT describes a standing set of Business Incubation Services rather than dated cohorts. The published suite is business development guidance, market research and analysis, access to funding opportunities, mentorship programmes, networking events and specialised training workshops. The AIP theme pages add business planning and enterprise development frameworks, consumer insight and value chain analysis, financial planning and investment readiness support, and capacity strengthening through training and mentoring. A press release about one portfolio company describes what the platform gives an entrepreneur as incubation facilities, scientific expertise, field facilities and networking capabilities.
No duration, no residency terms, no fee policy and no equity policy are published for that standing service, and no intake date is announced. Treat it as a conversation you start by email rather than an application you submit.
The incubator has run dated calls in the past. In 2022 it opened two calls under the Department of Science and Technology's NIDHI Seed Support scheme, supported by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board. Both closed — the first at the end of April 2022, the second at the end of November 2022 — and nothing newer has been announced on ICRISAT's own AIP news list, whose most recent item is from December 2025. Those calls are the clearest statement on record of what this incubator looks for, so they are worth reading even though they are shut. Selected startups were to get incubation services for business development and scaling up, access to the incubator's mentor and investor network, and what ICRISAT called ecosystem service partner packages. The seed support itself was debt-based at the prevailing repo rate, which ICRISAT presented as a way to raise funds without equity dilution.
There is also BioNcube, a biotechnology incubation unit at ICRISAT. BIRAC, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, supported its establishment through ABI-ICRISAT and ICRISAT's Platform for Translational Research on Transgenic Crops. A current staff member is titled Manager of both the Agribusiness Incubator and Bio Ncube, so the unit is live, but ICRISAT publishes no page, intake or application route for it.
Who can apply
ICRISAT publishes no general eligibility rules for its incubation services. There is no stated incorporation requirement, no geography rule and no category gate. Whether a company registered outside India can be incubated here cannot be answered from ICRISAT's pages, and we will not guess: the host is an international organisation, but the startup support on record was co-funded by Indian government schemes that carry their own conditions. Ask on the enquiry email before you invest time.
The only eligibility line anywhere is scheme-specific and belongs to the closed 2022 seed support calls: Indian startups working on innovative technologies or business models in the agri-food and allied sectors. Those calls also named a stage — early revenue, with product-market fit and clarity on the value proposition. For BioNcube, the sectors named are transgenics, ag-biologicals and secondary agriculture, and the stated span is proof-of-concept through product development and commercialisation.
Facilities
ICRISAT's Business Incubation page names an incubation centre but gives no size, location, equipment list or access terms. Nothing more is published. This matters because ICRISAT itself operates a long list of research service labs — genotyping and sequencing, phenotyping, grain quality assessment, soil and water analysis, food safety and aflatoxin testing, seed processing, and a genebank — each sold as a separate ICRISAT service with its own page. No page says incubatees get access to any of them, so they are the institute's facilities, not the incubator's.
Scale
The incubator's track record is documented only in press releases from 2022, and they disagree with each other. One names 106 startups supported and the other, seven months later, 118 startups of which 98 had graduated. One reports more than 3,200 direct jobs created by portfolio companies, the later one more than 3,000 — a cumulative count that fell. Both report substantial follow-on funding raised by portfolio companies, at two different figures. Nothing on ICRISAT's live site gives a current count, so we publish none.
One portfolio company is named on ICRISAT's own pages: XMachines, the brand of Flic Farm Pvt Ltd, an agricultural robotics and AI company that has been in ICRISAT's incubation programme since July 2019 and appeared on Shark Tank India in 2024.
Who runs it
ICRISAT's AIP staff page names Dr Dinesh Kumar Chauhan as Head of the Agribusiness and Innovation Platform and Dr Srinivas Bollam as Manager of the Agribusiness Incubator and Bio Ncube. The head named in the 2022 seed support calls is no longer on that list, so treat older contact details found elsewhere — including in the Department of Science and Technology's incubator list — as stale.
Locations
One site: ICRISAT's headquarters campus at Patancheru 502324, Telangana, which ICRISAT labels as Hyderabad. ICRISAT keeps a liaison office in New Delhi and regional offices in Kenya, Mali, Ethiopia and elsewhere, but none of those is stated to host the incubator. ICRISAT runs an institute-wide careers page and events calendar; both cover the whole research institute rather than the incubator.
