Track record

What BITS BIRAC BioNEST, BITS Pilani Goa reports about its portfolio.

These are the startups the incubator names on its own undated pages. Its three lists do not agree: five resident incubatees, eleven startups funded through the seed fund scheme, and a separate achievements list naming two more. There is no cumulative total of startups supported anywhere on the site.

5Startups supportedResident incubatees currently listed. The page is undated. A separate page lists 11 startups funded through the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme here, only one of which is also on the resident list, so there is no single total.

All figures self-reported — bits-pilani.ac.in, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at BITS BIRAC BioNEST, BITS Pilani Goa, separate from the funding calls above.

Incubation and virtual incubation are charged and run without deadlines. EnvironXcel and the seed fund scheme are the routes that carry support towards grants. New Venture Creation is a BITS course for students, not an open programme. Nothing here is shared with PIEDS at Pilani or the Hyderabad campus incubator — those are separate bodies with their own intakes.

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

This is the incubator's main offer. You take an enclosed office of about 120 sq ft, a wet-lab bench, or both together, and pay monthly. There is no published cohort or deadline, so it reads as a rolling intake.

What you get

  • An enclosed office, a wet-lab bench, or both
  • Laboratories and experimental facilities, conference rooms and library access
  • Help commercialising the technology, and institute-industry introductions
  • Basic business services and help raising finance
  • Handholding alongside mentors through the early steps
  • After incubation: advanced business plan and market research support, help with administrative and legal problems, and access to angel investors and venture capital

Who can apply

  • Early-stage startups working on health or environment products — drugs, diagnostics, medical instruments, water treatment and related areas
  • No student, incorporation or geography rule is published. The startups already in residence are incorporated companies and LLPs

How selection works: not published. The incubator asks for a filled application form, a presentation in its own format and a business plan on its template, which is the best guide to what it reviews.

How to apply: use the incubatee form on the Join Us page, and fill the application form, presentation format and business plan template from the Incubation page.

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

Virtual incubation is charged once a year rather than monthly, and is meant for startups that want to be attached to the incubator without taking a desk or a bench in Goa.

Who can apply

  • No eligibility rule is published for this track

How to apply: same route as residential incubation — the incubatee form on the Join Us page, or the application pack on the Incubation page.

The site does not say what virtual incubation includes beyond the charge, so ask what you actually get before committing.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

The bio-incubator is about 3,500 sq ft including 1,500 sq ft of office space, and publishes a list of roughly forty instruments in its lab. Charge sheets exist for incubatees and for outside users, so the lab is bookable even if you are not incubated.

Bio-incubator wet lab

Bench space taken monthly, inside a 3,500 sq ft facility of which 1,500 sq ft is office space. Equipment includes a BSL II B2 biosafety cabinet, laminar air flow, CO2 incubator, incubator shaker, fume hood, autoclave and a minus-80 deep freezer.

Enclosed offices (about 120 sq ft)

Taken monthly on their own or together with a wet-lab bench.

Analytical and diagnostics instruments

PCR and RT-PCR, gel documentation and electrophoresis, fluorescence and compound microscopes, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, autotitrator, Kjeldahl setup, COD, TOC and OXYTOP BOD analysers, high-speed centrifuge, rotary evaporator, MilliQ system. Usage charges are published separately for incubatees and outside users, and booking is through an online form.

Bioprocessing equipment

Fermenter, lyophilizer, spray dryer, muffle furnace, hot air oven and precision dry bath.

Support services

Help offered alongside funding and space.

The incubator sets out support in three stages — before, during and after incubation. No contact inbox is published, so the intake forms on its Join Us page are the way to ask.

IP & patents

Innovation assessment, IP and legal support at the pre-incubation stage, plus training in technical and IP management.

Business advisory

Feasibility analysis and expert feedback on the idea, training in proposal and business plan writing and presentation skills, mentoring, and handholding with mentors through the early steps. After incubation, advanced business plan and market research support.

Technology transfer

Help commercialising technologies and speeding up the move from R&D to a product, with institute-industry collaboration facilitated by the incubator.

Market access

Introductions to industry, researchers, funding agencies and government bodies, and access to angel investors and venture capital after incubation. The incubator points to the Verna industrial area nearby and to its partner network.

Legal & finance

Basic business services, help obtaining finance for growth, and support with administrative and legal problems after incubation.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

Both of these come from the incubator's own pages. The BioNEST designation is clear; how current its BIRAC funding is cannot be told, because no sanction period is published.

BIRAC BioNEST bio-incubator

The incubator says BioNEST Goa was initially supported by BIRAC, under the Department of Biotechnology, and BIRAC's head of entrepreneurship development sits on its board. No funding period is published and the wording is in the past tense, so whether that support is current cannot be told from its pages.

Approved incubator under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme

It runs a seed fund page, invites applications through the national portal, names a seed fund management committee and lists 11 startups already funded. We could not confirm this against the Startup India public incubator list, which does not load without scripts.

How to apply to BITS BIRAC BioNEST, BITS Pilani Goa

Pick the right route in

  • You need a wet-lab bench or an office in Goa: apply for residential incubation. It is charged monthly and you can take an enclosed office, a lab bench, or both.
  • You want to be attached to the incubator without moving to Goa: ask about virtual incubation, which is charged once a year.
  • You are still at the idea stage: look at EnvironXcel, the twelve-week accelerated pre-incubation programme. Strong participants get a wild-card entry into incubation.
  • You want grant support for a proof of concept or prototype: apply under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme with this incubator picked as your incubator.
  • You are a BITS Pilani student: take the New Venture Creation course, whose top teams get seed support and a route into incubation.

How applications work

  • The Join Us page has four separate forms — incubatee, mentor, partner and intern. Use the incubatee form.
  • The Incubation page also carries a downloadable application form, a presentation format and two business plan templates. Fill those, because they are what the incubator has told you it wants to read.
  • No deadline is published for incubation or for EnvironXcel, so treat it as a rolling intake and follow up.
  • Seed fund applications do not go through the incubator's own site. They go through the national Startup India seed fund portal, where you choose this incubator.
  • No contact email or phone number is published for the incubator, which makes the forms the only reliable way in.

How selection works

The incubator does not publish its selection process, a committee or a review calendar. What it asks for tells you what it weighs: a written application, a presentation, and a business plan on its own template. For the seed fund there is an incubator seed fund management committee, but its members are not readable on the page.

What to put in front of them

  • Make the health or environment angle the first thing they read. The incubator's own list is narrow: drugs, diagnostic devices, medical instruments, water and waste-water treatment, bio-remediation, biosensors. If your product does not sit in that list, say which part of it you touch.
  • Name the equipment you need. The lab list is published, so point at the specific instruments your work depends on and say roughly how much bench time you need. That is a concrete, answerable ask.
  • Show that the idea has been tested outside the lab. Pre-incubation support is described as market validation through prototyping and testing in the market, so bring whatever evidence of that you already have.
  • Be clear on your legal status. The resident startups are incorporated companies and LLPs. Nothing says you must be incorporated, so state where you are and ask.
  • Ask about equity and about what virtual incubation actually includes. Neither is spelled out on the site, and both are worth settling before you sign anything.

A caution on the site

The incubator's pages are undated and some are unfinished, with unwritten sections and a dead brochure link. The newest event listed is from 2023. Nothing there tells you whether a given programme is running right now, so confirm status before you plan around it.

About BITS BIRAC BioNEST, BITS Pilani Goa

BITS BIRAC BioNEST is the incubator on BITS Pilani's K K Birla Goa Campus at Zuarinagar, south Goa. It is run by the BITS Goa Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Society (BGIIES), a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in February 2020, whose office is on the campus. The incubator works on health and environment, and was set up with initial support from BIRAC, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council under the Department of Biotechnology.

This is one of three separate incubators inside BITS Pilani, and they do not share programmes. PIEDS is at the Pilani campus in Rajasthan and TBI@BITS Hyderabad is at the Hyderabad campus. If you are looking at a scheme you saw under one of those names, apply to that campus, not to Goa.

What it works on

The Goa bio-incubator's stated focus is novel drugs, diagnostic devices, medical instruments and water treatment technology. The areas it names include diagnostics and environmental technology, bio-remediation, enzymes from agricultural waste, grey water recycling for domestic appliances, low-cost materials for biomedical diagnostics, biosensor materials, catalysts for waste water treatment, nanomaterials for removing fluoride and heavy metals from ground water, and cheaper detection kits in fertility regulation. Its vision line is enabling innovation in healthcare and environment.

How programmes work

There are two ways to sit with the incubator and one accelerated route in.

Residential incubation gives you an enclosed office of about 120 sq ft, a wet-lab bench, or both together, charged monthly. Virtual incubation is charged once a year for startups that do not need space in Goa. Neither track publishes a cohort date, so both read as rolling.

Around the space the incubator describes support in three stages. Before incubation it helps validate the idea through prototyping and market testing, assesses the innovation, supports IP and legal work, helps write the proposal and business plan, and connects you to mentors, experts and advisors. During incubation you get the office and lab, conference rooms and library access, help commercialising the technology, basic business services, help raising finance, handholding alongside mentors, and introductions into industry. After incubation it offers advanced business plan and market research support, help with administrative and legal problems, and access to angel investors and venture capital.

EnvironXcel is a twelve-week accelerated pre-incubation programme for idea-stage founders, built around intensive business training, one-to-one coaching, business model refinement, mentor engagement and investor connects, with access to the incubator's lab and prototype support. Strong candidates get a wild-card route straight into incubation. An earlier health-side equivalent, HealthXcel, ran at least two cohorts, the second closing with a demo day in March 2023.

BITS BIRAC BioNEST is also an approved incubator under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme and invites applications through the national seed fund portal, covering proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialisation. The domains it accepts under that scheme are wider than the incubator's own remit: deeptech, healthcare, waste management, water management, education, agriculture, food processing, energy and mobility.

Separately, New Venture Creation is a one-semester BITS Pilani course rather than an open programme. It is taught across all BITS Pilani campuses over a telepresence classroom, teams are each assigned an entrepreneur as mentor, and the top teams are awarded seed support to take the idea into incubation. Only enrolled BITS students can take it.

Who can apply

Nothing on the incubator's pages restricts incubation to BITS students, staff or Goa-registered companies, and nothing states an incorporation requirement either. The startups it lists as residents are incorporated companies and LLPs. The intake form is open to anyone, and separate forms exist for mentors, partners and interns. Read that as open but undefined: because no eligibility rules are published, ask before you spend time on an application.

Facilities

The incubator is about 3,500 sq ft, of which 1,500 sq ft is office space. It publishes a list of roughly forty pieces of equipment in its lab, including a fermenter, a lyophilizer, a spray dryer, RT-PCR and PCR, a minus-80 deep freezer, a BSL II B2 biosafety cabinet, a CO2 incubator, an incubator shaker, laminar air flow, a fume hood, fluorescence and compound microscopes, gel documentation and electrophoresis, a high-speed centrifuge, COD, TOC and BOD analysers, a Kjeldahl setup, a UV-VIS spectrophotometer, a rotary evaporator, an autotitrator and a MilliQ system. Usage charge sheets are published separately for incubatees and for outside users, and instruments are booked through an online form.
