Programmes they run

Standing programmes at Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF), NIT Srinagar, separate from the funding calls above.

GIF runs one recurring programme, the Ignition Grant, as numbered cohorts. Both of the application windows it has published are closed, so watch for the next call.

Ignition Grant

Grant scheme

Cohort-based grant support for early-stage ventures, with incubation at NIT Srinagar.

Best for: Early-stage founders, mostly in and around Kashmir, who need first grant money and a place to build

  • Idea – MVP
  • In person
  • Grant support for selected startups

With Department of Science and Technology (NIDHI i-TBI)

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

GIF's recurring programme. It opens as a numbered cohort with a call for applications and a closing date, and shuts again when the date passes — the last two calls we can see, one with a March 2026 deadline and one with a June 2026 deadline, are both closed, and an earlier round ran in 2024.

What you get

  • Grant support for the selected ventures. GIF publishes no amount, and the sums reported for its last cohort differed from startup to startup.
  • Mentoring from the foundation's advisers and from the institute.
  • Incubation space with internet at NIT Srinagar.
  • Help chasing further funding through its investor network and government schemes, plus marketing, legal and regulatory, and product development support.

Who can apply

  • Early-stage founders and idea-stage innovators.
  • GIF publishes no eligibility rules at all — nothing on incorporation, stage, geography, or being attached to NIT Srinagar. Ask before you apply, especially if you are based outside Jammu and Kashmir.

How selection works: not published. The foundation announces the selected ventures at a felicitation event after the cohort closes.

How to apply: wait for the next call for applications and complete the online form it links. While the foundation's website is down, write to gif.info@nitsri.ac.in to ask when the next cohort opens.

NIDHI i-TBI (Department of Science and Technology)

GIF describes itself as established under the DST NIDHI i-TBI scheme, and the NIT Srinagar i-TBI appears in the Department's own published list of inclusive technology business incubators as updated in January 2026. The list gives no funding period, so whether the support is still running cannot be told from it.

How to apply to Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF), NIT Srinagar

Start by checking the door is open

GIF's own website was unreachable when we last checked, and both of the application windows it published are closed. Before you write anything, email the foundation's enquiry inbox at gif.info@nitsri.ac.in or call the number it publishes, and ask two things: whether a new Ignition Grant cohort is opening, and whether you are eligible for it.

Ask about eligibility rather than assuming it

  • GIF publishes no eligibility rules — not on incorporation, not on stage, and not on where you are based.
  • Every venture named in coverage of its last cohort appears to be based in Jammu and Kashmir, and the national scheme behind GIF exists to build ecosystems in states where they are young. If you are from outside the region, ask first.
  • Nothing says you must be an NIT Srinagar student, staff member or alumnus, so do not rule yourself out on that basis either. Ask.
  • Ask whether they need an incorporated entity or will consider an idea-stage team, since the answer decides whether you apply now or later.

How applications work

  • Intake is by cohort, not rolling. A call goes up with a closing date and an online application form, and closes on that date.
  • Deadlines have moved between what the foundation posted and what has circulated elsewhere, so confirm the real date with the foundation rather than trusting a listing.
  • Watch for the next call and get on their radar early — with a team this small, an email introducing your venture before the call opens is not wasted.

What to put forward

  • The ventures GIF has backed span software and AI, agriculture, health, connected devices and automation, alongside the green and environmental focus the institute set it up for. A clear technology core matters more than picking the right label.
  • Solving a problem visible in the region is a genuine advantage here — the foundation and its institute both describe their purpose in terms of local challenges and local job creation.
  • Be ready to talk about what you can build with a modest grant and campus facilities, since that is the shape of the support on offer.

What to check before you commit

  • Ask what the grant is for, how it is paid out and what reporting it carries.
  • Ask whether GIF takes any equity — it does not state a policy either way.
  • Ask whether incubation space at the campus comes with the grant, and whether you are expected to be physically present in Srinagar.

About Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF), NIT Srinagar

Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF) is a not-for-profit Section 8 company set up by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar and based on the institute's Hazratbal campus in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It calls itself an Inclusive Technology Business Incubator, or i-TBI, established under the NIDHI i-TBI scheme of the Department of Science and Technology. Its best known activity is the Ignition Grant, a cohort in which selected early-stage ventures get grant support and a place in the incubator.

One thing to know before you read further. GIF's own website, greenovator.org.in, did not load when we checked it in September 2026; the domain resolves but the site behind it is unreachable, and the last working copy we can see dates from April 2026. Everything below comes from that last working copy, from NIT Srinagar's own published note about the foundation, from the Department of Science and Technology's published list of i-TBIs, and from Kashmir news coverage of GIF's most recent grant ceremony. Treat the details as a starting point and confirm them with the foundation by email or phone before you plan around them.

Where it came from

NIT Srinagar has run an Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre, IIEDC, since May 2015, doing skill development, entrepreneurship support and incubation of student and grassroots ideas. Greenovator was created as the institute's separate, full-fledged incubation company on top of that centre, incorporated under the Companies Act as a Section 8 company, which means any surplus goes back into its objects rather than to members. NIT Srinagar's own note on the foundation describes Greenovator as India's first green technologies incubation centre and says the decision to form the company was taken in December 2018. The same note says it expects to draw project funding from agencies such as DST and CSIR and from alumni and donations.

How the programmes work

GIF runs the Ignition Grant in numbered cohorts rather than accepting applications all year. When a cohort opens, the foundation posts a call for applications with a closing date and an online form; when it closes, the form stops taking entries. The call GIF itself last published carried a deadline of 1 March 2026. We hold a separate Cohort 3.0 call with a June 2026 deadline, which came from a different form, and both of those windows are shut today. Its events page also records an Ignition Grant round in 2024, so this is a recurring cycle rather than a one-off.

Selected startups receive grant support. GIF publishes no amount anywhere on its own pages, and the per-venture sums reported in the press for its last cohort varied from one startup to the next, so treat any figure you see quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed. Alongside the money, the foundation describes mentoring from its advisers, incubation space with internet at NIT Srinagar, help finding further funding through its investor network and through government schemes, marketing and branding help, legal and regulatory support, and product development help. It also groups its mentoring under three themes: upskilling and education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and employability and engagement.

Who can apply

This is the honest answer: GIF does not say. Its pages carry no eligibility criteria at all. There is no stated requirement to be an incorporated company, no stage gate, no stated age limit, and — importantly — no published rule about geography or about being connected to NIT Srinagar. So we cannot tell you that a founder from outside Jammu and Kashmir may apply, and we cannot tell you that they may not. Equally, nothing says the cohort is limited to NIT Srinagar students or staff, and the ventures it has backed do not look like a student-only list.

What can be said is the direction of travel. The DST i-TBI scheme exists to build startup ecosystems in states where they are young, and every venture named in coverage of GIF's last cohort appears to be based in Jammu and Kashmir. If you are outside the region, ask the foundation directly whether you are in scope before you spend time on an application. That one email is worth more than any inference from this page.

Recognition

The NIDHI i-TBI status checks out against the government's own records, not just the foundation's word for it. The Department of Science and Technology's published list of NIDHI inclusive technology business incubators, updated in January 2026, includes the NIT Srinagar i-TBI, with GIF's principal investigator as the listed contact. The list gives no funding period, so whether that support is still running cannot be told from it. Nothing on GIF's pages claims an Atal Innovation Mission or NITI Aayog designation, and nothing claims it hosts NIDHI PRAYAS, NIDHI EiR or seed support — its homepage merely linked out to the national PRAYAS scheme page.

Who runs it

The core team is small: a chief executive, an incubation manager, a principal investigator who also heads the institute's IIEDC, and an office assistant. The board is chaired by the Director of NIT Srinagar and made up of institute deans. Its wider general body has included the head of NSTEDB at the Department of Science and Technology, the chief executive of IIT Kanpur's incubator, a former in-charge of the Jammu and Kashmir startup policy at EDI, and the chairman of Kashmir Angels, the local angel network GIF has announced a partnership with.

Track record and where to find it

GIF names Curve Electric among its success stories. Coverage of its Ignition Grant Cohort 2.0 ceremony in April 2026 put the number of startups supported at ten in the headline while naming nine in the body, so we do not publish a count. The foundation sits on the NIT Srinagar campus at Hazratbal and publishes an enquiry inbox and a phone number, which are the most reliable way to reach it while its website is down. It has also advertised jobs of its own, including an incubation manager post.
