About International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

Role in the Startup Ecosystem

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to support countries in their transition to renewable energy. India is a founding member. While IRENA itself is a policy and knowledge institution, it operates several finance and innovation facilities that climate-focused entrepreneurs and project developers can engage with.

Programs and Initiatives

IRENA's most relevant vehicle for entrepreneurs is the IRENA / ADFD Project Facility, run jointly with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which has committed concessional loans to renewable energy projects in developing countries across multiple funding cycles. IRENA also runs the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF) Platform, mobilising blended finance for renewable projects, and the Climate Investment Platform launched with UNDP and SEforALL. Through its Innovation and Technology Centre in Bonn, IRENA publishes technology outlooks and convenes innovation dialogues that surface emerging companies.

Who Benefits

Indian climate-tech founders and project developers working on solar, wind, green hydrogen, storage, geothermal, bioenergy, and grid-integration technologies can engage with IRENA primarily through project-finance and partnership channels rather than direct equity grants. Larger project-stage ventures and consortium-led initiatives tend to be the best fit.

Strategic Impact

IRENA is best understood as a multilateral enabler — useful for credibility, policy access, and concessional project finance — rather than a typical accelerator or seed funder. For Indian renewable-energy entrepreneurs aiming at deployments in India and other developing markets, IRENA's facilities offer a route to blended capital and government-backed visibility.
