Lok Capital is an India-focused investment firm, established in 2004, that backs tech-enabled businesses addressing social and environmental challenges. Its website says it is investing from its fourth fund and has a proven track record across funds of three vintages (2006, 2011, 2016). It is a SEBI-registered Category II alternative investment fund, with Lok Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd as fund manager.

What Lok Capital invests in

The firm states three focus areas: financial services, food and agriculture, and climate and sustainability. On its About page it describes investing in early to growth stage, fast growing, high impact and tech-enabled business models in India. It says it likes fundamentally driven models that make commercial sense and does not shy away from physical or phygital businesses. Its portfolio page groups companies under financial services, food and agriculture, climate and healthcare, and includes lenders, a wealth platform, a drone company, an aquaculture company and a consumer brand.

Stage and what it expects

Lok Capital says it typically comes in at Series A to C, and in most investments plays the role of the first PE-style growth investor on the cap table. It says it invests once product market fit has been established, there is proven revenue traction with some scale, and a clear path to profitability. On a selective basis it also looks at seed and pre-Series A stage investments. So this is a firm for founders who already have revenue, not for an idea-stage team.

What it looks for

The site lists high quality entrepreneurs with execution experience who want to build enduring businesses in a sustainable manner, business models with an embedded impact outcome, good governance systems with a focus on risk management, and a strong technological backbone in operations and delivery. It says it spends significant time before investing to assess founder intent and impact alignment, and that it takes a relationship-driven approach with significant field visits.

Support after investing

Beyond capital, Lok Capital says it designs and shares the cost of capacity building projects for portfolio companies, called technical assistance, covering tech, marketing, strategy, operations, sustainability and R&D. It also runs a fellowship that places talent from diverse backgrounds on focus projects agreed with portfolio companies.

Impact and climate commitments

Lok Capital states that its fourth fund is SFDR Article 9 compliant, uses a Climate Framework to screen and manage investments, and is a 2x qualified fund with a 40% women investment committee. It also says it is committed to developing a portfolio of at least 30% gender focussed investments.
