What should a FinTech founder check before writing to an investor?
Check that the investor names your sector and your stage on its profile, then look at what it has backed before and whether it has put money into a direct competitor. Confirm the current focus on the investor's own site, since a sector label on a directory is only a starting point.
Does an investor that names several sectors take them equally seriously?
Not always. A generalist may name many sectors and decide on the team and the market, while a specialist names few and knows them well. A specialist is more useful when you need help beyond money, and a generalist when your business crosses sectors.
Can I approach an investor that does not list my sector?
You can, but the odds are lower and the note has to explain why your company fits what the investor has backed. Lead with the investors that name your sector and stage.
