About UNICEF Venture Fund

Role in the Startup Ecosystem

The UNICEF Venture Fund is a financial vehicle established by UNICEF to identify and invest in early-stage technology companies in countries where UNICEF operates. It provides equity-free funding to startups working on open-source solutions and frontier technologies that benefit children and underserved communities. India is among the eligible markets, and several Indian startups have received Venture Fund investments.

Programs and Initiatives

The Fund typically issues calls for applications around specific technology cohorts — including blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, drones, virtual and augmented reality, and digital public goods. Selected startups receive up to USD 100,000 in equity-free funding along with product, technical, and business mentorship over a 12-month engagement. All funded technology must be released under open-source licenses. The Fund operates alongside UNICEF's broader Office of Innovation, which runs additional programs such as the Giga initiative for school connectivity.

Who Benefits

Indian founders building open-source frontier technology with a clear social or developmental application — particularly in education, health, climate, child protection, or financial inclusion — are well suited to the Fund. Applicants must be registered in a UNICEF programme country, have a working open-source prototype, and be willing to commit to the open-source requirement.

Strategic Impact

The Venture Fund offers non-dilutive capital, UN-system credibility, and a route into pilots with UNICEF country offices. For Indian deeptech and tech-for-good founders, it functions as a validation and growth signal that can attract follow-on impact and commercial investors.
