The Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is the University of Chicago's central resource for entrepreneurship education, new venture creation, and technology commercialization. Established in 1996, it operates at the intersection of academic research and market-ready innovation. The center provides founders, researchers, and students with the tools, mentorship, and capital connections needed to translate ideas into viable businesses. It is housed within the Booth School of Business but serves the entire university community.
The Polsky Center functions as both an incubator and an accelerator within the University of Chicago ecosystem. It bridges the gap between academic research and the startup world by offering structured programs, physical workspace, legal and IP support, and connections to a broad investor network. Its role extends to licensing university-owned intellectual property to startups and established companies alike, ensuring that research conducted at UChicago reaches commercial markets.
The center runs several flagship programs. The Polsky Accelerator provides workspace, mentoring, and funding connections for early-stage ventures. The New Venture Challenge (NVC) is a nationally ranked accelerator program and business competition that has produced multiple high-profile exits. The Edward L. Kaplan New Frontier Fund provides direct investment into university-affiliated startups. The center also operates the Polsky Exchange, a 34,000-square-foot co-working and event space in Hyde Park that hosts workshops, pitch events, and networking sessions throughout the year.
Polsky Center alumni include GrubHub (acquired by Just Eat Takeaway for $7.3 billion), Braintree (acquired by PayPal for $800 million), Simple Mills (acquired by Flower Foods for $795 million), and Cubii (acquired by Gridiron Capital for over $100 million). These exits demonstrate the center's strength in producing commercially successful ventures across technology, consumer products, and fintech.
The Polsky Center serves University of Chicago students, faculty, researchers, and alumni. It is particularly valuable for founders working on deep tech, life sciences, and data-driven ventures who benefit from close ties to UChicago's research infrastructure. Indian founders with a UChicago affiliation can access the center's resources to build globally scalable companies.
With over 160 startups supported and multiple billion-dollar exits, the Polsky Center is among the top university-affiliated innovation hubs in the United States. Its strength lies in combining rigorous academic thinking with practical venture-building support, creating a pipeline from research lab to market.
