Premji Invest is an evergreen investment firm backed by Azim Premji's capital, with offices in Bangalore and Menlo Park, California. It describes itself as a venture capital firm that backs technology, healthcare, consumer and fintech companies from the earliest stages, and it also runs growth-equity and public-market practices. It was set up in 2006, and a significant majority of its returns go to the philanthropic corpus that supports the Azim Premji Foundation. The firm says it is a for-profit investor, not an impact fund, and that investment decisions are made on commercial merit.

Capital and structure

Premji Invest says it invests permanent capital rather than money raised from external limited partners. There is no fund end date, so it states that it can add to a position over later rounds, stay through a difficult period, and remain a shareholder after an IPO. In India its funds are alternative investment funds registered with SEBI, and PI Investment Advisory LLP is the investment manager for all of them. The firm says it is deliberately flexible on cheque size and does not publish a figure.

The India site names early stage, growth equity and public markets as its three approaches. Its list of partner companies is dominated by growth-stage businesses, so founders who are pre-revenue should treat this as a later-stage door than a seed fund. Premji Invest says it is built to lead rounds at both early and growth stages, will co-lead or co-invest, and takes board or observer roles where that helps the founder.

The firm also warns that people have impersonated its staff, often through WhatsApp groups, to give fake investment advice. It says it offers no advisory services to retail or institutional investors and that its only social presence is LinkedIn.
