Track record

What Vel Tech Technology Business Incubator (Vel Tech TBI) reports about its portfolio.

Treat the incubator's homepage counters with care. They render as zeros in the page and their real values sit in the markup, and the startups number there is more than ten times the number of incubatees the incubator lists on its own page. Only the itemised figures are used here.

38Startups supportedCounted from the incubator's own published incubatee list. Its homepage counter gives a far larger number that none of its other pages support.

All figures computed from our data — veltechtbi.com, as of May 2025.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at Vel Tech Technology Business Incubator (Vel Tech TBI), separate from the funding calls above.

Five government schemes and one Tamil Nadu voucher scheme run through this incubator, each with its own page, manager and inbox. Not all are open at once: the NIDHI PRAYAS Year 5 call is marked closed, and the Innovation Voucher Programme page was written for the 2024-25 round. Check the status before applying.

The incubator's main route in, giving startups space, mentoring, training and access to its workshops, with no incubation charge stated.

Best for: Technology startups and individual innovators, from inside or outside the campus

  • Idea – Early revenue
  • In person
  • Free

With Department of Science & Technology (NSTEDB)

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

Incubation is the base programme every funding route here sits on top of. The incubator names two stages, pre-incubation and post-incubation, and describes eight ways to engage with it, of which the first is joining as a startup incubatee. Its homepage states there are no charges for incubation. Machine time in the thrust-area facilities is described separately as available at subsidised rates.

What you get

  • Space, mentoring, networking and training
  • Access to the e-waste and plastic waste recycling facility, the Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, the electronics manufacturing line, 3D printing, the non-destructive testing facility and the AI centre, at subsidised rates
  • Training covering technology, innovation, GST, finance, e-commerce, digital transformation, bio-incubation and product management
  • Partner offers including Google Cloud and AWS credits, Zoho apps, an Effitrac mini-ERP, Paytm, RBL Bank, IDFC First Bank and Bank of Baroda, YNOS Venture Engine, MathWorks and a Stanford Seed Spark cohort place
  • A route into the five funding schemes the incubator runs

Who can apply

  • Technology startups and innovators; the published incubatee list includes companies registered outside Tamil Nadu, and nothing on the incubator's pages limits intake to Vel Tech students, staff or alumni

How selection works: through the incubator's own selection process. Its NIDHI PRAYAS terms state that a grantee must be registered on the pre-incubation or incubation programme for the whole duration of the grant, after going through that process.

How to apply: fill the incubation application form on the incubator's site, or write to incubation@veltechtbi.com. The form asks for the promoter's details, the founder's PAN, the company name, registration number and date, type of company, sector, domain expertise and work experience, and says to mark anything not yet applicable as NA.

NIDHI PRAYAS

Grant scheme

DST's idea-to-prototype grant, run here as a PRAYAS centre with its own fab lab. The Year 5 call is closed.

Best for: Individual innovators and very early startups with a hardware or deep-tech idea to prototype

  • Idea – Prototype
  • In person
  • Free, no equity
  • Grant support for selected startups

With Department of Science & Technology (NSTEDB)

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

NIDHI PRAYAS exists to turn an idea into a working prototype, and Vel Tech TBI has run it as a PRAYAS centre since 2018. The incubator's page marks the Year 5 call as closed and publishes no next date, so treat this as between intakes and check before applying. Selected innovators get grant support, keep their own IP, and use the Vel Tech DST PRAYAS Shala fab lab.

What you get

  • Grant support to build a prototype from an idea
  • IP stays with the innovator or the startup
  • Access to the PRAYAS Shala fab lab and the incubator's workshops
  • A place on the incubator's pre-incubation or incubation programme for the length of the grant

Who can apply

  • An Indian citizen with government-approved proof of nationality, at least 18 on the date of application
  • An individual innovator, or a team that agrees who the lead innovator is
  • A startup founder or co-founder, where the startup is incorporated in India, at least 51 per cent held by Indian citizens, not more than seven years from incorporation, and under a stated turnover cap in every year since inception
  • Someone in employment or study at an R&D organisation or academic institution, with an NOC giving permission to apply, time to do the work, and IP vesting with the innovator
  • Priority areas are manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, clean-tech, energy, water and IoT. Pure software development, e-commerce, service solutions and app-based solutions are excluded, as is funding research or a student internship inside an institution.
  • Not open to anyone already supported once under NIDHI PRAYAS, anyone supported under NIDHI-EIR in parallel, anyone employed with another incubator or PRAYAS centre, mentors active with the PRAYAS centre, the faculty in charge of the centre, or members of its programme management committee

How selection works: applicants must own the know-how and the IP, and show a roadmap towards commercialisation. Preference goes to innovators who have bootstrapped or hold a co-investment commitment, to women innovators and to young innovators. Selected grantees then go through the incubator's own selection process for the incubation place.

How to apply: contact the NIDHI PRAYAS manager at nidhiprayas@veltech.edu.in.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

The workshops are the reason to come here. Everything below is the incubator's own except the Centre for Autonomous Systems Research, which belongs to the host institute and states its own startup access. Incubation carries no charge, but equipment time in the thrust-area facilities is described as subsidised rather than free.

Vel Tech TBI incubation facility

Incubation runs in two stages the incubator calls pre-incubation and post-incubation.

Co-working space

Listed first among the incubator's services and named again in its TIDE 2.0 support list.

Training covers GST and finance; the seed routes include help with day-to-day operations and professional consultancy.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

The incubator names NSTEDB, DST, MeitY and DPIIT relationships on its own pages, and is the knowledge partner to EDII-TN for one Tamil Nadu scheme. None of these pages publishes a sanction or funding period, so whether a given grant is still running cannot be told from the site.

NIDHI Centre of Excellence, NSTEDB, DST· 2017

The incubator states this in its site title and in the footer of every page. It also runs NIDHI PRAYAS and the NIDHI Seed Support System as a centre. Note this is a NIDHI Centre of Excellence, not a NIDHI-TBI. No funding period is published, so whether the grant is current cannot be told from the incubator's pages.

Technology Business Incubator established with NSTEDB, DST support· 2010

The incubator's history page says the TBI was established in 2010 with NSTEDB-DST support, with the institute providing land and building, and that DST seed support to incubatees followed in 2015.

Approved TIDE 2.0 Centre, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology· 2020

Stated on the incubator's own MeitY page: it is an approved TIDE 2.0 centre, and runs both the Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Grant routes with a named manager. No scheme period is published.

Startup India Seed Fund Scheme incubator· 2021

The incubator runs SISFS, which only incubators selected by DPIIT may do, with a senior manager, its own inbox and an application guide. Worth confirming against the official SISFS incubator list, which could not be queried when this page was checked. This is about the incubator's role, not about DPIIT recognition of a startup.

Knowledge Partner, Innovation Voucher Programme (EDII-TN, Government of Tamil Nadu)

A role on one Tamil Nadu scheme, not a state accreditation of the incubator.

How to apply to Vel Tech Technology Business Incubator (Vel Tech TBI)

Choosing the right route

Vel Tech TBI runs five government-funded routes and one state voucher scheme, and they are not interchangeable. Match the route to where your product actually is.

  • Only an idea, nothing built yet: NIDHI PRAYAS, which exists to get an idea to a prototype. It takes individuals and teams, not just incorporated companies.
  • An idea and you want to work on it full time inside the incubator: the MeitY TIDE 2.0 Entrepreneur-in-Residence route, if you are under 35 and will register a company within three months of accepting it.
  • A proof of concept that needs to become an MVP: the MeitY TIDE 2.0 Grant route.
  • A DPIIT-recognised company under two years old: the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme route.
  • Already incubated here for three months or more, with customer validation: the NIDHI Seed Support route.
  • A Tamil Nadu manufacturing MSME with a product close to market: the Innovation Voucher Programme, where Vel Tech TBI is the knowledge partner to EDII-TN.

How applications work

There is an incubation application form on the incubator's site, but it is not in the main menu, so most people never find it. It asks for the promoter's name and contact details, the founder's PAN, the company name, registration number and registration date, the type of company, your sector, educational qualification, address, what is innovative about the startup, your domain expertise, work experience and website. Every field is marked required, and a note at the end says to write NA where something does not apply yet — so an unincorporated innovator can still submit it. Each funding scheme also names a manager with a phone number and an inbox and asks you to write in. The general enquiry route is the incubation inbox at incubation@veltechtbi.com. For the Innovation Voucher Programme you also register on EDII-TN's own portal.

Calls are not always open. The NIDHI PRAYAS Year 5 call is marked closed on the incubator's own page, and no next date is published, so check before you spend time on an application. The Innovation Voucher Programme page was written for the 2024-25 round.

What reviewers look for

Read the exclusions before the eligibility. NIDHI PRAYAS will not fund pure software development, e-commerce, service solutions or app-based solutions, and will not fund research or a student internship inside an institution. If you are in a job or studying, you need an NOC from your employer or institute that both gives you time to work on the project and confirms the IP will vest with you, not with them. IP ownership is the single condition PRAYAS repeats most.

Across the routes, three things recur:

  • Ownership. Indian promoters holding at least 51 per cent, and the know-how and IP sitting with you.
  • A commercialisation path. PRAYAS says outright that it will not back an innovator with no roadmap or intent towards commercialisation, and the seed routes ask for a USP validated with real customers.
  • Prior support. Several routes ask whether you have already taken government money for the same idea, and PRAYAS can be availed only once.

Stated preferences worth knowing: women innovators, young innovators, bootstrapped or co-invested teams, and ideas with a granted, published or provisional patent.

Practical points

Incubation is stated as carrying no charges, but machine time in the thrust-area facilities is described as subsidised rather than free, so budget for it if your build depends on the workshops.

If your product is physical, say so plainly and name the facility you need. This incubator's strengths are recycling, manufacturing, PCB assembly, testing and drones, and an application that shows you know which bench you would be standing at reads better than one that does not.

About Vel Tech Technology Business Incubator (Vel Tech TBI)

Vel Tech Technology Business Incubator, usually written Vel Tech TBI, is a technology business incubator in Avadi, Chennai. It was set up in 2010 with support from NSTEDB at the Department of Science & Technology, and is hosted by Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, which provided the land and building. It is recognised as a NIDHI Centre of Excellence by NSTEDB, DST, and its own site states there are no charges for incubation.

It began with e-waste and plastic waste management as its thrust area and built a recycling facility for both, then added a bio incubator, 3D printing, a manufacturing centre of excellence, an electronics manufacturing line and an AI centre. Five government schemes run through it, and it is the knowledge partner for a Tamil Nadu state voucher scheme.

Who can apply

This is the point most founders get wrong about a campus incubator: Vel Tech TBI's published eligibility lists are national, and none of them asks you to be a Vel Tech student, employee or alumnus. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme route asks for a DPIIT-recognised startup incorporated not more than two years ago, using technology in its core product, service, business model, distribution model or methodology, with Indian promoters holding at least 51 per cent. NIDHI PRAYAS asks for an Indian citizen aged 18 or over, and accepts individual innovators, teams, startup founders, and people in employment or study who can get an NOC from their organisation. MeitY TIDE 2.0 asks for an Indian citizen under 35, either an individual innovator or a startup less than two years old. The NIDHI Seed Support route asks for a registered Indian company, preferably DPIIT-recognised, that has already spent at least three months with the incubator. The Innovation Voucher Programme is the one geography-gated route: it is for Tamil Nadu-based manufacturing MSMEs.

The incubator's own history page counts student entrepreneurs as a minority of the startups it has backed, and its published incubatee list includes companies registered in Haryana, Karnataka and Kerala.

How programmes work

There is an incubation application form on the incubator's site, though it is not linked from the main menu. It asks for the promoter's details, the founder's PAN, the company name, registration number and registration date, the type of company, your sector, domain expertise and work experience, and what is innovative about the startup, with a note that anything not yet applicable can be marked NA. Beyond that, each funding scheme has its own page, its own named manager, a phone number and an inbox, and applicants are asked to write in. The Innovation Voucher Programme registers through EDII-TN's own portal.

Incubation itself runs in two stages the incubator names as pre-incubation and post-incubation. A NIDHI PRAYAS grantee has to be registered on the pre-incubation or incubation programme for the whole duration of the grant, after going through the incubator's selection process, so the grant and the incubation place come together rather than separately.

Sectors

The thrust areas are practical rather than broad: e-waste and plastic waste management, core manufacturing and additive manufacturing, electronics and printed circuit boards, AI and machine learning, drones and autonomous systems, biotechnology, automobile technology, renewable energy, and agriculture with unmanned aerial technology. NIDHI PRAYAS here names manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, clean-tech, energy, water and IoT as priority areas, and rules out pure software development, e-commerce, service solutions and app-based solutions. The Innovation Voucher Programme names agritech, healthtech, deep tech, waste management, engineering, energy and nano-tech. If you are building software with no hardware in it, most routes here are closed to you.

Facilities

The e-waste and plastic waste recycling facility is the oldest part and is described as a national facility, with cabinet and hard-disc shredders, eddy current, magnetic and electrostatic separators, a single shaft shredder and a plastic baler.

The Manufacturing Centre of Excellence covers additive manufacturing, CNC precision machining, welding, CNC and NC control heavy fabrication, non-destructive testing and metrology, and plastic injection moulding with HDPE welding.

The Electronic Manufacturing Services facility does prototype, low-volume, high-volume and turnkey PCB assembly, single and double-sided, surface mount, through-hole and mixed, with conformal coating and BGA down to 0.35 mm pitch. Named machines include a wave soldering machine, a reflow oven, a semi-automatic screen printer and a Yamaha S10 pick-and-place.

The Non-Destructive Testing Facility runs eddy current, ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle and radiography testing. There is also a 3D printing facility, a Centre for AI Research & Business Solutions built around an NVIDIA DGX system, a PRAYAS Shala fab lab, and co-working space.

The Centre for Autonomous Systems Research sits under the host institute rather than the incubator, and says on its own page that it supports early-stage ventures with mentorship, prototyping and system integration help, lab and testbed access, fabrication including 3D printing, PCB design and sensor kits, robotics simulation environments, and support for pilot testing and field trials.

Who runs it

Dr. P. Chandrakumar is the Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Rajaram Venkataraman is the NIDHI CoE Strategic Advisor. Each scheme has its own manager, and there is a Board of Governors chaired by the institute's Founder-President with the TBI CEO as its manager and a Bank of Baroda representative as a member. An advisory panel brings in people from L&T Technology Services, Mahindra & Mahindra, NITTTR Chennai, IIITD&M Kanchipuram, NITIE Mumbai and The Campus Angels Network.

Partner offers and where it is

Incubatees get partner offers including Google Cloud and AWS credits, Zoho apps, an Effitrac mini-ERP, Paytm payments, banking from RBL Bank, IDFC First Bank and Bank of Baroda, YNOS Venture Engine database access, MathWorks training credits, a Stanford Seed Spark cohort place, and 3D printing work with Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre.

The incubator is at 42 Avadi-Vel Tech Road, Chennai 600062, on the Vel Tech campus in Avadi. Its events page lists what it is running, and enquiries go to the incubation inbox.
