Track record

What VJTI TBI Foundation reports about its portfolio.

VJTI TBI is one of the few incubators here that reports outcomes rather than just scale: 49 startups, 30+ products actually developed, Rs 10 Cr+ in portfolio revenue and 80+ jobs. Reporting products shipped and revenue generated, rather than only a startup headcount, is a harder and more honest measure.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at VJTI TBI Foundation, separate from the funding calls above.

The offer is described but never priced: no fee, tenure, equity term or funding amount appears anywhere. The partner list is the concrete part.

Incubation programme

Incubation

Mentorship, investor connect, lab access, training, recruitment, legal/IP and marketing support.

VJTI TBI publishes what incubation includes but not what it costs, how long it runs, or whether it takes equity. Applications go through a form on its site.

Platform

Credits and tooling via LTI Avishkar, AWS Activate, MathWorks, SOLIDWORKS, MyOperator, IEEMA and IET.

For a hardware or simulation-heavy team, MathWorks and SOLIDWORKS licences are a material saving — commercial seats for both run into lakhs annually.

Deliberately narrow. The testing infrastructure is scoped to energy, clean-tech, cyber security and industrial IoT, which matches where VJTI TBI concentrates rather than trying to serve every sector.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

Just the one, and it is the foundational one: a DST-supported TBI hosted by VJTI. Fewer scheme empanelments than most peers here, which is part of why the funding routes are thin.

DST-supported Technology Business Incubator

Small, focused, and unusually honest about outcomes

VJTI TBI Foundation is the technology business incubator at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Matunga, Mumbai — one of India's oldest engineering colleges — with Department of Science and Technology support.

It reports the harder metrics. 49 startups is a smaller number than the largest incubators publish, but the figures alongside it are the kind most avoid: 30+ products actually developed, Rs 10 Cr+ in revenue generated by portfolio startups, 80+ jobs. Counting products shipped and revenue earned is a stronger claim than counting startups touched.

The focus is genuinely narrow, and that is the point. Testing infrastructure for energy, clean-tech, cyber security and industrial IoT. If you are building industrial or energy hardware in Mumbai, that specificity is a feature rather than a limitation.

Underrated: the partner stack. MathWorks and SOLIDWORKS licences alone are worth lakhs a year at commercial rates, alongside LTI Avishkar, AWS Activate, MyOperator, IEEMA and IET. For a simulation-heavy hardware team that can matter more than a small grant.

Best fit: energy, clean-tech and industrial IoT hardware founders who want deep facilities, a focused peer group and a central Mumbai campus. Incubation terms are quoted on application — info@vjti-tbi.in.

About VJTI TBI Foundation

VJTI TBI Foundation is a technology business incubator established in 2017 at the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was set up with support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the NIDHI (National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations) program. VJTI is one of India's oldest engineering colleges, founded in 1887, and the TBI leverages this institutional legacy to support technology-driven startups in cleantech, IoT, cybersecurity, and allied sectors.

Role

VJTI TBI acts as a bridge between academic research at VJTI and the startup ecosystem. It provides early-stage technology ventures with infrastructure, mentorship, technical resources, and connections to funding. The incubator draws on VJTI's engineering faculty and research labs to help startups solve technical challenges and develop market-ready products. It also serves as a gateway for government grants and seed funding programs available through DST-NIDHI and other central government schemes.

Programs

The incubator runs structured incubation programs that typically span 18 to 24 months. Startups accepted into the program receive access to co-working space on the VJTI campus, mentorship from faculty and industry experts, seed funding support through NIDHI Prayas and other DST schemes, and help with intellectual property filing. VJTI TBI also conducts pre-incubation workshops and hackathons to identify promising student-led ventures. The incubator has partnerships with industry bodies and corporate partners to provide startups with pilot opportunities, testing facilities, and market access.

Who Benefits

VJTI TBI primarily serves early-stage technology startups, with a focus on founders working in clean technology, energy, industrial IoT, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Student entrepreneurs from VJTI and other Mumbai-based engineering colleges benefit from the incubator's campus location and academic resources. The incubator is well-suited for hardware and deep tech startups that require lab access and prototyping facilities.

Strategic Impact

With 49 startups supported to date, VJTI TBI is building a credible track record in Mumbai's incubation landscape. Its DST-NIDHI backing provides startups with access to non-dilutive government funding, which is a significant advantage for early-stage founders. The incubator's strength lies in its deep technical roots and its ability to draw on VJTI's 135-year legacy of engineering education. For founders in Mumbai working on hardware, cleantech, or industrial technology, VJTI TBI offers a combination of academic expertise, physical infrastructure, and government funding access that few private incubators can match.
