Every newspaper and periodical published in India must be registered with the Press Registrar General of India (PRGI) — the office formerly called the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) — under the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023. The Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023 came into force on 1 March 2024 and replaced the colonial-era Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. Under it, the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) was renamed the Press Registrar General of India (PRGI), and title allotment and registration became a single online process on the Press Sewa Portal, without the physical interface the old regime required. Every newspaper, magazine, journal and periodical published in India must be registered with the PRGI. The publisher declares the publication's title, language, frequency and management details. The Act provides for title verification so two publications cannot be registered under the same name, and requires annual statements of circulation and ownership.
