Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) certification for MSMEs — unlocks credit incentives and government procurement preference
ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) Certification is a government scheme for MSMEs that assesses quality management, environmental practices, and operational efficiency. Higher ZED ratings unlock financial incentives, procurement preference, and export promotion benefits.
ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) is a national quality certification scheme launched by the Ministry of MSME for Indian MSMEs, aiming to improve manufacturing quality and environmental sustainability. The ZED Assessment Framework evaluates an MSME on over 50 parameters across quality management, process control, environmental management, financial health, and innovation. Ratings are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Platinum. Higher ratings attract: subsidy on the certification fee, collateral-free credit preference, government e-market (GeM) preferential listing, export promotion benefits under MSME schemes, and national recognition. ZED certification is voluntary but strongly encouraged for MSMEs seeking to upgrade quality standards and access institutional procurement.
MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal seeking to improve quality standards, access government procurement preferences on GeM, obtain credit benefits, or build their brand credibility in domestic and export markets.
Registration on ZED portal
MSME registers on the ZED portal (zed.msme.gov.in) and fills the self-assessment questionnaire.
ZED assessment
A trained ZED assessor visits the facility and evaluates the 50+ parameters in the assessment framework.
Rating determination
Based on the assessment score, a rating (Bronze through Platinum) is assigned. Non-conformities and improvement areas are identified.
Action plan and certification
The MSME implements the improvement plan. The final ZED rating certificate is issued.

No. ZED is a voluntary certification scheme. However, it is strongly incentivised through subsidies and procurement preferences.
The government provides a subsidy of up to 80% of the certification fee for micro enterprises, 60% for small enterprises, and 50% for medium enterprises. Enterprises in NE states, hill states, J&K, and Andaman & Nicobar receive an additional 10% subsidy.
ZED-certified MSMEs may receive preference in GeM procurement for certain product categories. The scheme's linkage with GeM is evolving — we confirm the current benefits applicable to your sector.
The assessment evaluates: Quality, Environment, Human Resource, Technology and Innovation, and Financial Health. Scores are aggregated to determine the ZED rating.
