ART और FIST क्या देखते हैं

UG-PG Fellowship के लिए आवेदन से पहले

BITS BioCyTiH Foundation (BBF) is a Section 8 non-profit company hosted by BITS Pilani and funded under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. It is a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) focused on Bio-Cyber Physical Systems (Bio-CPS), an interdisciplinary field combining biology, electronics and computer science, and it operates across all three BITS Pilani campuses — Pilani in Rajasthan, Goa, and Hyderabad.

What they support

BBF's programmes are built around four sectors: healthcare, agriculture, water and environment. Its own pages give examples such as biosensors, precision agriculture, water purification, digital medtech and IoT. Founders it supports range from student innovators and faculty researchers through to startups and MSMEs with a market-ready product, with different programmes pitched at each stage. This is BITS Pilani's Bio-CPS-focused hub — a separate body from PIEDS, BITS Pilani's other campus incubator.

Programmes

Physical Incubation is BBF's on-campus track, open to Indian startups and MSMEs across its Goa, Pilani and Hyderabad facilities. It gives a dedicated working space, meeting room access, laboratory facilities, IPR support, networking and marketing support, mentoring, and access to grant support.

The Virtual Incubation Program (VIP) is the remote equivalent, open to individual entrepreneurs and startups anywhere in India working in Bio-CPS. It connects incubatees to mentorship, business advisory, industry contacts, investment and fundraising opportunities, and BBF's R&D infrastructure, along with seminars, webinars and workshops — all without needing to relocate.

Faculty Startup Incubation (FSI) is for deep-tech faculty startups that incubate at one of BBF's own facilities. It comes with no incubation charges for the first three months and a 50% subsidy from the fourth to twelfth month, along with support for company formation, interns, and prototype refinement.

The BioCyTiH Advanced Startup Equity (BASE) Program is aimed at startups and MSMEs whose product is ready for market or has recently launched, addressing short-term cash-flow needs. It covers areas such as medtech and wearable devices, CPS security, sensor platforms, robotics, AI and quantum technologies in healthcare, sustainability technologies and precision agriculture.

The Advanced Research Translation (ART) Program funds translational research by faculty, scientists and researchers at academic institutions or government research establishments, moving work from technology readiness level 5 upward toward a market-validated product. Selected projects share IP ownership with BBF, and if a startup emerges from the work, BBF is offered equity and facilitates any technology transfer. Five calls under ART have run and closed to date.

Faculty Innovation & Startup Traction (FIST) is a related call aimed at faculty and scientists commercialising technology from TRL 7 onward, combining grant funding with investment-style capital to build long-term traction.

The Bio-CPS Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) programme is a six-month fellowship for early-stage Bio-CPS innovators, with a monthly fellowship to de-risk the journey and a cash prize on successful completion. Two cohorts ran in 2023.

The Prof. G.N. Ramachandran Student Fellowship is a rolling UG and PG fellowship for final-year undergraduates and postgraduate students working on Bio-CPS prototypes, with monthly assistance and access to BBF's labs and mentoring, alongside guidance on IP and regulatory questions.

An Acceleration Program is also listed, offering tailored resources and guidance to help a startup move faster toward market entry, though BBF's page does not yet detail its eligibility or process.

Facilities

BBF runs four named labs. The Incubation Lab and Biosensor Lab, both in Goa, carry instruments including Surface Plasmon Resonance, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, a Zeta-sizer, Real Time PCR, Preparative HPLC and Quartz Crystal Microbalance systems. The Device Lab, also in Goa, is built for hardware and sensor prototyping, with maskless lithography, RF-DC sputtering, a wire bonder and a semiconductor parameter analyzer. The Omics Lab in Pilani is built for genomic, proteomic and metabolomic work, with Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, a peptide synthesizer, a Q-TOF system, and Next Generation Sequencing on a PromethION 24. Startups can book instrument time across these labs, and BBF also offers IP management and technology transfer support — handling invention disclosures, novelty searches and patent filing in-house before outsourcing the actual filing to IP law firms — plus a mentor network connecting founders with experienced mentors through panels and one-on-one sessions.

Track record

BBF reports 6,316 participants engaged across its workshops, masterclasses, conferences, EIR programmes and incubation activities to date. Its portfolio page names 54 startups it has worked with, spanning healthcare, agritech, water and cleantech ventures. BBF also runs a hub-and-spoke research model with two partner institutions: IIT Dharwad on agriculture-focused projects (sensors, drones, imaging and energy harvesting under a "Farms of Future" theme) and SASTRA Deemed University on healthcare-focused projects in AI and electrochemical biosensors. Internationally, it has a World Lab Network collaboration with Shimadzu Asia Pacific and Spinco Biotech.

Who runs it

BBF is led by CEO Dr Anil Wali. Its board is chaired by Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, alongside the directors of BITS Pilani's Hyderabad, Goa and Pilani campuses, and external members including the Executive Director and CTO of a Bengaluru research organisation and the MD & CEO of the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone.

Locations

BBF's registered office is at BITS Pilani's Pilani campus in Rajasthan, its CEO's office is at the BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus, and it also operates through the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus — giving founders three physical locations to apply through depending on which is closest.
