Innovation Mission Punjab (IM Punjab) is a public-private partnership initiative established in 2021 by the Government of Punjab, headquartered in Mohali. The mission serves as the primary catalyst for building and strengthening Punjab's startup and innovation ecosystem. IM Punjab operates at the intersection of government policy, private sector resources, and entrepreneurial ambition, working to position Punjab as a competitive destination for startups in northern India. The organization coordinates across multiple stakeholders including academic institutions, industry bodies, investors, and government departments to create a cohesive support framework for founders.
IM Punjab functions as the implementation arm of Punjab's startup and innovation policy. Its mandate covers the entire spectrum of ecosystem building, from fostering an entrepreneurial culture among students and young professionals to providing capital access for growth-stage startups. The mission works to address specific gaps in Punjab's ecosystem, including limited access to venture capital, insufficient incubation infrastructure outside major cities, and the need for stronger industry-academia linkages. By operating as a public-private partnership rather than a purely government body, IM Punjab brings agility and private sector expertise to the task of ecosystem development.
IM Punjab runs programs focused on several priority sectors including drone technology, cybersecurity, and manufacturing engineering, reflecting Punjab's industrial strengths and emerging technology opportunities. The mission facilitates access to seed funding and growth capital for startups, connects founders with mentors from industry and academia, and organizes events that showcase Punjab-based innovations. IM Punjab also collaborates with educational institutions across the state to introduce entrepreneurship curricula and encourage students to consider startup careers. The organization works with the Department of Industries and Commerce to streamline regulatory processes and incentives for startups registered in Punjab.
Startups registered or operating in Punjab across sectors including agriculture technology, manufacturing, cybersecurity, and drone technology are primary beneficiaries. Student entrepreneurs from Punjab's universities and colleges, as well as returning professionals who wish to build ventures in their home state, benefit from the ecosystem infrastructure that IM Punjab is developing. Industry associations and investors looking to engage with Punjab's startup community also find the mission a useful coordination point.
IM Punjab represents a strategic intervention to ensure that Punjab does not fall behind other Indian states in the startup economy. By focusing on sectors where Punjab has natural advantages, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and the defence corridor, the mission creates differentiated opportunities that complement rather than compete with ecosystems in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The public-private partnership model allows for sustained investment in ecosystem building beyond electoral cycles, providing continuity that purely government-run programs sometimes lack.
