Track record

What Pusa Krishi, ICAR-IARI reports about its portfolio.

Every figure on Pusa Krishi's impact panel is self-reported and carries no date: 600+ startups incubated, 55+ women-led startups, 234+ funded startups, 20,972 jobs generated, 37.28 lakh farmers benefited, 144+ IP filings and 392+ products commercialised. They cover the unit's whole history across every programme, so they are much larger than any single programme's numbers — ARISE alone reports 1,243+ applications, 70+ startups incubated and 31+ funded. Only five portfolio companies are named on the site.

600Startups supportedStated as 600+ startups incubated, undated, covering the whole history of the unit across all programmes. The ARISE programme page separately reports 70+ startups incubated on that programme alone.
20,972Jobs createdStated as 20,972 employment generated, undated.
144Patent familiesStated as 144+ IP filed — filings, not grants, and undated.
392Products to marketStated as 392+ products commercialized, undated.
₹32.5 CrCapital mobilisedLabelled only as total startup funding — the site does not say whether this is grant support disbursed by Pusa Krishi or capital raised by its portfolio. Undated.

All figures self-reported — pusakrishi.in, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at Pusa Krishi, ICAR-IARI, separate from the funding calls above.

Pusa Krishi runs a ladder rather than one programme: BEEJ and Her Harvest as short online courses, ARISE for ideas and prototypes, UPJA for MVP-stage startups, SHITIJ as a separate year-long route, and ICAR SHITIJ 2.0 across the wider ICAR incubation network. MAITRI and SAMARTH are not startup intakes. Every incubation programme was between intakes when this page was written. The prior-funding eligibility rule differs on each programme page — read it before applying.

ARISE

Incubation

Pusa Krishi's entry-level incubation programme for idea and prototype-stage agri innovations, which opens into a year of incubation with grant support.

Best for: Indian citizens with an idea, innovation or early-stage startup in agriculture and allied sectors

  • Idea – Prototype
  • Online mentoring phase, then a one-year incubation programme. Pusa Krishi's own pages give the mentoring phase as both one month and two months.
  • Hybrid
  • Free
  • Grant support for selected startups
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

ARISE takes early-stage ideas and prototypes in agriculture and allied sectors and tries to turn them into businesses. It runs an online mentoring phase first, then a year of incubation at Pusa Krishi for the teams that clear the jury pitch. Registration was closed when this was written; the 2026 cycle ran from 17 April to 17 May, with results on 10 June and the cohort starting between 15 June and 15 July.

What you get

  • Mentoring and coaching from technical experts and business leaders
  • Technical validation, business assessment and IP checks on your prototype
  • A pitch to a panel of experts, and for those selected, a year of incubation with grant support released against milestones
  • Field trials and pilot opportunities
  • Access to Pusa Krishi's network of startups and founders

Who can apply

  • Indian citizens with an idea, innovation or early-stage startup in agriculture or an allied sector
  • No incorporated company is required
  • You may apply having raised funding, but not if you have already received government grant support above the stated threshold for the same product or service
  • One innovation per applicant
  • Applicants must not be blacklisted by a government body and must have no pending litigation

How selection works: A panel scores applications on need, novelty, technical feasibility, business viability, scalability, social impact, market size, team capabilities and projected financial growth. Shortlisted applicants attend a selection committee interview, then join the online mentoring cohort. At the end of it, startups pitch to a jury, and the shortlisted ones enter the year of incubation with grant support.

How to apply: Through the open call on the Pusa Krishi site when the next cycle opens. An application can be saved and finished later, but cannot be edited after submission. Applying is free.

UPJA

Incubation

Incubation programme for agri startups with a product already at minimum viable product stage, carrying Pusa Krishi's largest grant support.

Best for: Agri startups with a solution at minimum viable product stage

  • MVP – Early revenue
  • Online mentoring phase, then a one-year incubation programme. The page gives the mentoring phase as both one month and two months.
  • Hybrid
  • Free
  • Grant support for selected startups
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

UPJA is the track for startups that have got past the prototype and have something working. It offers technology validation, mentoring, pilot opportunities, go-to-market support and industry linkage, and follows the same two-phase route as ARISE into a year of incubation at Pusa Krishi. Registration was closed when this was written; the 2026 cycle ran 17 April to 17 May, results on 10 June, cohort start 15 June to 15 July.

What you get

  • Technology validation and technical, business and IP assessment
  • Mentoring and coaching from technical experts and business leaders
  • Pilot opportunities, field trials and industry linkage
  • Go-to-market support
  • For teams selected at the jury pitch, a year of incubation with grant support released in tranches

Who can apply

  • Startups with an innovative solution in agriculture or an allied sector at minimum viable product stage
  • Indian citizens
  • Applicants who have previously received grant funding under any state or central government scheme are not eligible
  • No incorporation requirement is stated on the programme page

How selection works: The same route as ARISE — panel scoring against the stated parameters, a selection committee interview, the online mentoring cohort, then a jury pitch that decides who enters the year of incubation with grant support.

How to apply: Through the open call on the Pusa Krishi site. Applications can be saved and completed later but not edited once submitted. Applying is free.

  • 14 days
  • Online
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

SAMARTH

Programme

A capacity-building programme for agri-incubators and incubation managers in the RKVY-RAFTAAR network — not a startup intake.

Best for: Agri-incubators and incubation managers, not startups

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

SAMARTH is aimed at other incubators, not at founders. It builds the capacity of incubation managers and their centres across the network of knowledge partners and R-ABIs set up under the RKVY-RAFTAAR scheme, sharing practices for managing startups, running incubation programmes and developing entrepreneurship. Pusa Krishi's own page gives the network as 31 centres in its text and 29 or more on its counters. It reports ten workshops hosted and more than 400 participants benefited. No intake was open when this was written.

What participating incubators get

  • Expert mentorship and hand-holding in running incubation programmes
  • Access to Pusa Krishi's network of mentors, institutions and investors
  • Support for operational and documentation work
  • Funding opportunities for incubators and their startups
  • Collaboration with other incubators

Who can take part: Agri-incubators in the RKVY-RAFTAAR knowledge partner and R-ABI network. Founders should look at ARISE, UPJA or SHITIJ instead.

Incubation tracks

Pusa Krishi, ICAR-IARI runs a virtual track, so you can join without relocating.

The incubation programmes share one shape: an online mentoring cohort, a jury pitch, then a year of physical incubation at Pusa Krishi for the teams selected. SHITIJ instead opens with fifteen days of in-person training before its incubation year.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

The incubation centre sits on the ICAR-IARI campus at Pusa and offers co-working space, two conference rooms and three labs — post-harvest technology, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Market access

Market linkages, industry connections, pilot opportunities and field trials for incubated startups.

Technology transfer

Pusa Krishi is ICAR-IARI's ZTM & BPD Unit and has a Technology Commercialization Lead on staff; technology validation is part of the incubation programmes.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

Pusa Krishi's credential claims are all self-stated and none carries a published order, sanction period or funding dates. It calls itself a nodal agency under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, its own history lists a NIDHI TBI launched in 2021, and its portfolio groups startups under RKVY-UPJA, RKVY-ARISE, DST-NIDHI TBI and ABIC. We could not confirm any of these against a public government registry.

Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare

Pusa Krishi describes itself as a nodal agency under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. Its SAMARTH programme is built around the RKVY-RAFTAAR network of knowledge partners and R-ABIs, and its portfolio filters label startups as RKVY-UPJA and RKVY-ARISE. No scheme order, sanction or period is published.

DST NIDHI TBI· 2021

Pusa Krishi's own history lists a NIDHI TBI launched in 2021, and its portfolio filters include a DST-NIDHI TBI group. It does not publish a sanction order or funding period, and we could not confirm it against a public DST registry — treat the current funding status as unknown.

How to apply to Pusa Krishi, ICAR-IARI

Pick the right programme

  • You have an idea or a prototype in agriculture: ARISE is the entry route.
  • You already have a working product or MVP: UPJA is the track built for that stage, and carries the larger grant support.
  • You want a year of incubation with an in-person training block first: SHITIJ runs fifteen days of training and mentoring, then a year of incubation that can be extended if you do well.
  • You are happy to go in through any ICAR agribusiness incubation centre: ICAR SHITIJ 2.0 runs hub-and-spoke across the network, so you apply through a designated hub or spoke centre.
  • You are a student or a first-time founder still shaping the idea: BEEJ is the fourteen-day online pre-incubation course. It will not get you into incubation by itself.
  • You run an incubator, not a startup: SAMARTH is the capacity-building programme for agri-incubators.

Check the prior-funding rule before you apply

This is the rule that catches people out, and it is different on each page.

  • ARISE: you may apply having raised money, but not if you have already received government grant support above its stated threshold for the same product or service.
  • UPJA: anyone who has previously received grant funding under any state or central government scheme is not eligible.
  • SHITIJ: you may apply if you have raised funding, with no restriction stated.

How applications work

  • Apply directly. Pusa Krishi has published a notice saying it accepts applications only from startups themselves, authorises no agent, consultant or third party, and charges nothing to apply. If someone offers to file your application or arrange mentor access for a fee, they do not represent Pusa Krishi.
  • You may submit one innovation. Multiple applications for different ideas are not accepted on the incubation programmes.
  • You can save an application and come back to it, but once you submit it you cannot edit it.
  • Applications go through Pusa Krishi's own portal, linked from the call on its site.
  • For queries write to connect@pusakrishi.in. To report anyone claiming to represent Pusa Krishi, write to communication@pusakrishi.in.

How selection works

The incubation programmes describe the same sequence. A panel scores your application, you are shortlisted for a selection committee interview, and if you clear it you join the online mentoring cohort. At the end of the cohort you pitch to a jury, and the jury decides who enters the year of incubation with grant support. Reaching the cohort is therefore not the same as being funded.

What reviewers look for

The stated evaluation parameters are need, novelty, technical feasibility, business viability, scalability, social impact, market size, team capabilities and projected financial growth. Write the application against that list. Two points are worth spending effort on: the technical validation your prototype will have to survive, since selected teams are put through technical, business and IP checks, and the milestones you commit to, because grant support is released against milestones rather than in one go.

Timing

The 2026 ARISE and UPJA cycle opened on 17 April and closed on 17 May, with results on 10 June and cohorts starting between 15 June and 15 July. ICAR SHITIJ 2.0 ran a separate window, open 3 July and closed 31 July 2026, with its online programme from 20 August to 19 October. If you are reading this between intakes, watch the programme pages and the Latest News page for the next call. Pusa Krishi's short agripreneurship trainings at the Pusa campus run through the year and are a way to use the campus and its scientists in the meantime.

About Pusa Krishi, ICAR-IARI

Pusa Krishi is the agri-business incubator run by ICAR-IARI in New Delhi, operating as the institute's ZTM & BPD Unit on the Pusa campus at 110012. It says it was set up as an incubator under ICAR-IARI in 2014, and describes itself as a nodal agency under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. It backs founders working on agriculture, food and rural problems, from students with an untested idea through to startups already selling a product.

How programmes work

Most of the incubation programmes follow the same two-step shape. You apply during an open call, a panel scores the application, shortlisted applicants sit a selection committee interview, and those who get through join an online mentoring cohort. At the end of that cohort you pitch to a jury, and the startups the jury picks move into a year of incubation at Pusa Krishi with grant support.

ARISE is the entry point for an idea or a prototype. UPJA is for startups that already have a working product, and carries the larger grant. SHITIJ is a separate year-long incubation route that opens with a fifteen-day in-person training block before the incubation year, and can be extended beyond the year for teams doing well. ICAR SHITIJ 2.0 is a different animal: it is run across the ICAR Agribusiness Incubation Centre network on a hub-and-spoke basis, so applications go in through the designated hub and spoke centres rather than to Pusa Krishi alone, and it is a two-month online programme with optional physical incubation afterwards at a spoke centre.

Below the incubation ladder sit two short courses. BEEJ is a fourteen-day online masterclass series for students and first-time founders, ending in a certificate; Pusa Krishi is explicit that finishing BEEJ does not guarantee a place in an incubation programme. Her Harvest is a five-day online workshop series built around women entrepreneurs, charged as a one-time fee, and Pusa Krishi says it has no direct link to the incubation programmes either.

Two more programmes are not startup intakes at all. MAITRI is an international collaboration programme — its India-Brazil editions ran in 2019, virtually in 2021, and again over ten days from 22 September 2025 with six days at ICAR-IARI in New Delhi and four at ICAR-NIVEDI in Bengaluru. SAMARTH is a capacity-building programme for other agri-incubators in the RKVY-RAFTAAR network of knowledge partners and R-ABIs, not for founders.

Separately from all of this, Pusa Krishi runs short, paid, hands-on agripreneurship courses at the Pusa campus with ICAR-IARI's own subject divisions — recent editions have covered food processing, mushroom cultivation, bioinformatics, millet-based snacks, biofertilizers, protected horticulture and microgreens. These are the one thing on the site with an open registration at the time of writing.

Who can apply

For ARISE and SHITIJ the stated bar is simple: be an Indian citizen with an idea, innovation or early-stage startup in agriculture or an allied sector. Neither page asks for an incorporated company. UPJA describes itself as being for solutions at minimum viable product stage, though its own eligibility answer repeats the same idea-stage wording used elsewhere on the site.

The prior-funding rules differ by programme and are worth reading before you apply. ARISE lets you apply even if you have raised money, but bars anyone who has already taken government grant support above a threshold for the same product or service. UPJA is stricter and says applicants who have previously received grant funding under any state or central government scheme cannot apply. SHITIJ simply says you may apply if you have raised funding. Across the incubation programmes you may submit only one innovation, and an application can be saved and finished later but not edited once submitted.

ICAR SHITIJ 2.0 is open to Indian citizens with an innovation, idea, product or solution relevant to agriculture, with no stage or geography gate published. BEEJ is aimed at students, first-time entrepreneurs and early-stage founders. Her Harvest is presented as a series for women entrepreneurs, though its own eligibility answer says all entrepreneurs are welcome.

Facilities

The incubation centre offers co-working space taken per seat, as a half room or as a full room, two fully equipped conference rooms with more arranged on request, and a shared reception and lounge. Three labs sit alongside it: a Post-Harvest Technology lab with proofers, sealing machines and baking ovens for shelf-life and processing work; a Biotechnology lab with gel documentation units, spectrophotometers and real-time PCR machines; and a Bioinformatics lab with high-performance computing for genomics and proteomics analysis.

Scale

Pusa Krishi's own impact panel reports more than 600 startups incubated, 55 women-led startups among them, 234 funded startups, 20,972 jobs generated, 37.28 lakh farmers benefited, 144 intellectual property filings and 392 products commercialised. All of these are self-reported and undated, and they cover the whole history of the unit rather than any one programme — the ARISE page, for instance, separately reports more than 1,243 applications received and more than 70 startups incubated on that programme alone. The site names five portfolio companies and lists fifteen startup mentors.

Who runs it

Dr. Akriti Sharma is Chief Executive Officer and Dr. Amarjeet Singh is Chief Operating Officer. The team page also lists an Innovation Lead, an Incubation Manager, an Intellectual Property Lead, a Technology Commercialization Lead and a marketing and communications manager, plus administrative, technical and research staff.
