The Idea Grant, offered by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), is an early-stage funding scheme designed to bolster innovative startups. It specifically targets ventures in their Ideation, Design, Proof of Concept (PoC), and early Minimum Viable Prototype (MVP) stages, assisting aspiring entrepreneurs in transforming promising concepts into tangible solutions.

The program provides financial assistance of up to ₹3 lakhs, intended to cover essential expenses for crucial product development activities. This includes costs associated with prototyping, rigorous testing, technology validation, and overall refinement of the solution. By supporting these critical early activities, the Idea Grant enables founders to mitigate technical and market risks, enhance their offerings, and strategically prepare for market entry or securing subsequent funding rounds. The scheme explicitly prioritizes the development of technology-driven and highly innovative solutions that demonstrate strong commercialization potential within the startup ecosystem.

Eligibility

Startups at Ideation, Designing, or Proof of Concept (PoC) stages are eligible to apply, supporting foundational development before significant market presence. Applicants are not eligible to reapply for this specific grant scheme if they have already submitted an application or received support within the preceding three months from the date of the previous application. Company incorporation as a Private Limited Company or Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) is a mandatory requirement that must be fulfilled before the official disbursal of any grant funds. The startup's core product or service must be an innovative, technology-based solution, emphasizing advancements in technology. Innovators and startups applying for the grant must be based out of Kerala, establishing a geographical nexus for the program. Possession of a KSUM Unique ID certification is mandatory, and this requirement must be met prior to the fund disbursal process.

Application Process

Applications undergo initial screening by KSUM officials. Shortlisted applicants present their idea and fund utilisation plan to an Expert Committee. The Expert Committee evaluates based on the team, product innovation, marketing, financials, and grant utilisation plan. Approved recommendations are submitted for final approval by the CEO/Chairman of KSUM. Grant funds are disbursed in milestone-based tranches, typically with a 50% first tranche, and the balance released after a progress review and utilisation certificate submission.
