About Kerala Startup Mission

Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is the nodal agency of the Government of Kerala for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state. Established in 2014 under the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, KSUM works to build a sustainable startup ecosystem by connecting entrepreneurs with mentors, investors, and markets. The agency operates from Thiruvananthapuram and maintains a presence across the state through its network of technology incubators and innovation centres.

KSUM has supported over 4,000 startups and facilitated the registration of more than 6,500 startups in the state. Its programs cover everything from student entrepreneurship through Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres (IEDCs) in colleges to growth-stage support through technology parks and co-working spaces.

Role in the Startup Ecosystem

KSUM serves as the single-window interface between the Kerala government and the startup community. It implements the Kerala Technology Startup Policy and coordinates with national programs like Startup India. The agency plays a unique role by embedding entrepreneurship awareness deep into the education system through its network of 400+ IEDCs in engineering and arts colleges across Kerala, making it one of the most grassroots-level startup promotion agencies in India.

Programs and Initiatives

KSUM runs several flagship programs including LEAP Coworks (a chain of co-working spaces across Kerala), the Kerala Startup Mission Seed Fund, Innovation Grants, and technology-specific incubation programs. It operates specialized facilities like the Maker Village for hardware startups in Kochi, the BioNest incubator for life sciences ventures, and the BRINC accelerator for drone startups. The agency also hosts the KSUM Seeding Kerala initiative, which provides early-stage funding, and the Scale-Up program for growth-stage companies.

Notable Alumni

KSUM-backed startups include Genrobotics (robotic manhole cleaning), SurveySparrow (experience management platform), Entri App (vernacular learning platform), Fin Robotics (wearable tech), EyeROV (marine robotics), and Navalt Solar Boats (India's first solar ferry). These ventures span hardware, SaaS, and deeptech domains.

Who Benefits

First-time founders in Kerala, student entrepreneurs at IEDCs, hardware startups needing prototyping labs, and growth-stage companies looking for co-working infrastructure and investor connections. The programs are particularly useful for founders based in Tier 2-3 cities across Kerala.

Strategic Impact

KSUM has transformed Kerala from a state known primarily for its service-sector economy into a recognized startup hub. Its grassroots approach through college-level IEDCs has created a pipeline of young entrepreneurs, while its infrastructure investments have ensured founders do not need to migrate to metros to build their ventures.
