Patent Reimbursement (International) is a benefit under the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy 2020, administered by U.P. Electronics Corporation Limited (UPLC) via the StartinUP portal. It reimburses up to ₹10 lakh of the cost incurred by a UP-registered, StartinUP-recognised startup in securing a granted patent outside India — typically via a PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application or direct national-phase filing in a foreign jurisdiction.
As with the Indian patent scheme, reimbursement applies only to successful ("granted") patents — the application must clear examination and be formally awarded in the target country before UPLC processes the claim; costs incurred while a filing is only pending are not reimbursed.
International patent protection is significantly more expensive than domestic filing — translation, foreign attorney and national-phase fees can run into several lakhs per jurisdiction — so this benefit is aimed at startups building deep-tech, hardware, or globally-exportable IP that need protection beyond India to raise capital, license, or expand internationally with confidence that their invention can't be freely copied abroad.
This benefit sits alongside the parallel Patent Reimbursement (Indian) scheme (up to ₹2 lakh) — a startup holding both a domestic and an international patent on the same invention can claim reimbursement under both.
