• The WE-ESCALATE announcement does not state a closing date, so check the announcement page before you apply.

• Most programme pages do not state an intake window, so confirm the current call on the page before you apply.

The Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) is a Government of Karnataka undertaking that supports biotech and life-sciences startups from idea stage to market. It is based on the IBAB campus at Helix Biotech Park in Electronic City, Bengaluru, and runs pre-incubation, incubation and accelerator programmes alongside several grant schemes. It also offers a co-working space and internship placements.

How the programmes work

The centre's programmes follow the stage a company is at. The Pre-Incubation Program is for early-stage innovators and students who have a promising idea that needs validating, and it gives mentorship, resources and initial support to take a raw concept to a proof of concept. The Incubation Program is for startups ready to build their products. It offers fully furnished wet labs suited to research and development, helps startups secure grants such as BIG and SBIRI, and connects them with venture capital and angel investors. The Accelerator Program is for growth-stage startups with a product ready for the market, and it runs valuation workshops and investor introductions to prepare startups for Series A and Series B funding.

Several schemes sit alongside these programmes. ELEVATE 100 / Idea2PoC is a Government of Karnataka initiative to identify and nurture innovative startups, and selected startups receive grants, mentorship, labs and market-readiness support from the centre. Grass Root Innovation gives grants to artisans, farmers and technicians to commercialise ideas that address rural challenges. The Rajiv Gandhi Entrepreneurship Program gives young graduates a monthly stipend for 12 months to develop a proof of concept. WE-ESCALATE is an acceleration programme for women-led life-sciences startups in Karnataka, and its top three applicants receive a deployment grant.

Who can apply

Eligibility depends on the programme. The Pre-Incubation Program is open to early-stage innovators and students with a promising idea. The Incubation Program is for startups ready to build their products, and the Accelerator Program is for growth-stage startups with a product ready for the market. The pages for these two programmes do not state further eligibility criteria.

WE-ESCALATE asks for women founders or co-founders, DPIIT-registered or life-sciences startups, and innovators ready to scale from lab to market, and it is limited to startups based in Karnataka. Grass Root Innovation is for artisans, farmers and technicians commercialising their ideas. The Rajiv Gandhi Entrepreneurship Program is for young graduates pursuing innovation-driven ventures. The ELEVATE 100 / Idea2PoC scheme applies to startups selected under the Government of Karnataka initiative, and the centre's page points to the state's mission website for its criteria.

Facilities

The main lab facility is a set of fully furnished, modular wet labs with gas, water and power utilities, suited to research and development work. The Incubation Program lists these labs as part of its offer.

The co-working space offers high-speed internet and reliable power backup, and the centre describes it as physical space for early-stage businesses, food innovators and rural entrepreneurs with a breakthrough idea.

The centre also set up a MedTech facility, which its funding page says was anchored by a BIRAC BioNEST grant. The page says the facility provides regulatory guidance and seed funding, and that it has supported more than 50 startups. The funding page also describes an Agri/Farm Innovation Centre being established at the centre with support from NABARD and KITS.

Scale

The centre's cohort page says it has supported more than 100 startups, and it features String Bio, Yostra, Indoor Biotech, Aindra, Terra Blue, Pandorum, Atrimed and VNIR. These are the centre's own figures, and the cohort page gives no date for its total. The ELEVATE 100 / Idea2PoC scheme supported 10 startups in 2024, and Grass Root Innovation facilitated five startups in the same year.

The centre describes Pandorum Technologies, a regenerative medicine company, and 4baseCare, a precision oncology company, as BBC-incubated startups. Pandorum has raised a Series B funding round, and 4baseCare has raised the first close of its Series B. Those rounds were raised by the startups, not by the centre.

Who runs it

The centre is a Government of Karnataka undertaking. Its own wording says it was jointly established by the Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology, and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The centre has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with NABL, the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, which is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India. It has also formalised its collaboration with ICMR.

The centre's team and news pages give its director's role in different terms, so this page does not name a title.
