Pick the right route in

• You want space, labs and a team around you: apply for incubation at BITS BIRAC BioNEST. Residency is charged monthly; virtual incubation is charged yearly if you only want the network and services.
• You are still at the idea stage: ask about EnvironXcel, the twelve-week pre-incubation programme. Doing well there can earn a wild-card entry into incubation.
• You want seed funding: apply under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme through the national portal and name this incubator.

How applications work

• Incubation applications go through the online form on the incubator's Join Us page. The same page has separate routes for mentors, partners and interns.
• Download the three documents from the incubation page before you start: the application form, the presentation format and the business plan template. All three are asked for in the formats the incubator publishes, so use them rather than your own deck.
• Seed-fund applications are not made to the incubator. They are made on the national Startup India seed fund portal, where you pick your incubator.
• Nothing on either site gives a deadline or a cohort calendar, so treat incubation as rolling and write in to check before you wait.

What to check before you apply

• Fit. The declared focus is health and environment. The seed-fund page opens that up to deeptech, waste and water, education, agriculture, food processing, energy and mobility. The society's about page calls itself sector agnostic. If you are outside health and environment, ask directly rather than assuming.
• Eligibility. Neither site publishes one. There is no stated incorporation requirement, no students-only rule and no geography gate. Ask, and get the answer in writing.
• Equity and costs. The society's objects allow it to take equity in startups in return for facilities, services and funding, and residency is charged monthly. Neither site says what it takes in practice, so settle both before you commit.

What the incubator seems to look for

• A business plan and a pitch in its own formats, which points to a written review followed by a presentation.
• Something that can be tested in the lab. Most of the named portfolio is physical or deep-tech: diagnostics, dental implants, EV chargers, food-waste processing, a bone densitometer.
• Readiness to use what it offers — wet-lab bench time, the instrument list, mentor introductions and the partner programmes from AWS, GitHub and HubSpot.

BGIIES is the BITS Goa Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship Society, a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, in February 2020 at BITS Pilani K. K. Birla Goa Campus in Zuarinagar, Goa. Its stated purpose is to set up and run business incubators anywhere in India and to support innovation-based startups. Today it supports one incubator: BITS BIRAC BioNEST, the bio-incubator on the BITS Goa campus, which works with startups in health and environment.

Both names matter when you look for the right page. BGIIES is the society; BITS BIRAC BioNEST is the incubator it administers, and most of what a founder needs — the incubation offer, the charges, the application pack, the seed-fund page — sits in the BITS BIRAC BioNEST section of the BITS Pilani site, not on the society's own site.

What they support

The incubator's declared focus areas are health and environment: novel drugs, diagnostic devices, medical instruments and water treatment technology, alongside bio-remediation, biosensors, low-cost diagnostics, materials for removing fluoride and heavy metals from groundwater, and catalysts for wastewater treatment. Its seed-fund page lists a wider set of domains — deeptech, healthcare, waste management, water management, education, agriculture, food processing, energy and mobility. The society's own about page calls BGIIES sector agnostic, which does not match the focus areas every operational page states, so treat health and environment as the real centre of gravity and ask if you sit outside it.

Neither site states an eligibility bar. There is no published requirement to be incorporated, no restriction to BITS students, staff or alumni, and no geography or category gate. The society's objects are open — it exists to run incubators anywhere in India — and its IIT Goa partnership covers co-incubation of IIT Goa students, which is an addition rather than a limit. Because none of this is written down, confirm your eligibility before you spend time on the application pack.

How incubation works

The incubator describes its support in three stages. Pre-incubation covers validating the idea: prototyping and testing in the market, innovation assessment, IP and legal support, preparing a proposal and a business plan, and introductions to mentors, experts and advisors. Incubation covers the working years: office and rental space, laboratories, conference rooms and library access, help commercialising the technology, basic business services, help raising finance, handholding alongside mentors, and institute-industry collaboration. Post-incubation covers graduation: advanced business plan and market research support, help with administrative and legal problems, and access to angel investors and venture capital.

Residency is charged. A startup can take an enclosed office of about 120 sq ft, a wet-lab bench, or both, each at a published monthly rate, and there is a virtual option billed yearly for founders who want the network without a desk.

Alongside residency the incubator runs EnvironXcel, a twelve-week pre-incubation programme for idea-stage founders: intensive business training, start-up toolkits, one-to-one coaching, business model refinement, expert support, mentoring and investor connects, plus access to the innovation lab and R&D prototype support. Candidates who do well can be given a wild-card entry into incubation. The page carries no dates and no way to apply, so ask about the next intake.

The third route is the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme. BITS BIRAC BioNEST is a seed-fund incubator and has a page inviting applications, which are made on the national Startup India seed fund portal rather than to the incubator directly. The scheme supports proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialisation, and the incubator names eleven companies it has backed through it.

Facilities and equipment

The bio-incubator is about 3,500 sq ft in total, roughly 1,500 sq ft of it office space. Its published equipment list is a working wet-lab inventory: a BSL-II B2 biosafety cabinet with full exhaust and no recirculation, a CO2 incubator, a fermenter with control of temperature, pH and agitation, an inverted fluorescence microscope, a gel documentation system, a real-time PCR machine, a lyophilizer, a spray dryer, a TOC analyser, a UV-VIS spectrophotometer, an autotitrator and a minus-80 deep freezer. A conference room with a smart board is bookable alongside the equipment. Incubatees also sit on the BITS Goa campus, whose laboratory, library and auditorium the incubator lists as infrastructure available to them — those belong to the host institute, not the incubator.

Partners and networks

Portfolio startups get access to third-party programmes the incubator has signed up for: Amazon Web Services as an Activate provider, GitHub, whose Accelerate programme gives startups under five years old twenty GitHub Enterprise seats for a year, and HubSpot's partner programme. Beyond tooling, the incubator is an incubator partner in the India Finland Startup Hub through the Headstart Network Foundation, has a partnership with iHub at IIT Roorkee meant to give its startups market access and funding, and runs joint programmes with IIT Goa including co-incubation of IIT Goa students. Its advisory board includes the chairman of the Goa State Innovation Council and directors of Molbio Diagnostics and bigtec. The incubator also points to its location near the Verna industrial area, which it says houses forty to fifty pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and biomedical companies.

Scale

The numbers here are the organisation's own, undated, and they do not agree with each other. The society's homepage counters report 31 startups incubated, 72 per cent of them funded, more than 200 jobs created, 21 collaborations, 24 investors, 30 mentors and advisors and 120 outreach and training events. The incubation page on the same site shows twenty incubatee logos, one of them unfilled. The seed-fund page names eleven companies supported under the national scheme, among them Dirac Electric, Greengrahi Solutions, Intellicon Technologies, Accessibility Redefined and Amcas Innovations. The incubator separately says two of its startups won BIRAC BIG awards in 2021 and that it placed in the top five private bio-incubators in an industry survey, without giving the year.

Who runs it

Prof. Suman Kundu is the society's president and Prof. D. M. Kulkarni its secretary, with Ian F Sardinha as treasurer. The two sites disagree on the other office bearers: the society's site names Prof. Sachin Arya as vice president and Prof. Anirban Roy as joint secretary, while the BITS executive committee table names Prof. Sunil Bhand and Prof. Mridula Goel in those seats. Prof. Mridula Goel is faculty in charge of BITS BIRAC BioNEST. Day to day the incubator team is Tarun Krishnakumar as general manager, Sahita Desai as manager and Eesha Desai as senior technician. Dr. Manish Diwan of BIRAC sits on the incubator's board with Prof. Sunil Bhand and Prof. Srikanth Mutnuri.
