What you get
- Office space, ICT support and use of a thrust-area lab
- A fabrication and prototype workshop with 3D printers, a 3D scanner and a laser engraver and cutter
- Mentoring from ten empanelled mentors, and in-house soft-skills and design-thinking coaching
- Help with incorporation, HR and legal matters, publicity and promotion
- Research and development with the host university, exposure and study trips, skill-set development and library access
- The centre also lists seed capital funding and acceleration among its services, without naming a scheme
Who can apply
- Founders affiliated with Mizoram University and founders with no connection to it — the centre states both may be assisted
- Ventures in agriculture and allied, manufacturing and engineering, energy or ICT
- No incorporation requirement, geography restriction or category gate is stated
How selection works: the centre does not publish its selection process, how long incubation runs, what it charges or whether it takes any stake. Ask the office for those terms in writing before you commit.
How to apply: fill the Apply Incubatee Online form on the centre's site, choose your thrust area and upload your application as a PDF or Word document. There is no deadline. Enquiries go to office@incubemzu.com or director@incubemzu.com, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
A student innovation challenge for Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges; no new edition is announced.
Best for: Students of Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges
- Idea
- In person
With MZU Entrepreneurship Development Centre, Mizoram University Institution's Innovation Council
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
An innovation challenge for students of Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges, run to surface ideas that address local and regional problems. It is between editions: the last finale was held in February 2025 with twelve finalist teams, and nothing is currently open.
What you get
- Mentoring from outside experts for shortlisted teams, ahead of the final
- Prizes in undergraduate and postgraduate categories, and a special category for social impact
- Entries judged viable as businesses may be taken forward for incubation at the centre, where they can use its research and prototyping facilities
Who can apply
- Students of Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges only
- Individuals or teams of up to five people
How selection works: teams submit a written project proposal; proposals are assessed and a shortlist goes through to the next round; shortlisted teams get mentoring to sharpen the idea; the final is a presentation to a panel of judges followed by questions. Judges weigh originality, how practical and feasible the solution is, how clearly it is presented, and whether it could scale.
How to apply: entries open when an edition is announced, through a downloadable application form on the challenge page with a named coordinator. Watch the centre's news page, or ask the office.

Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
The centre's own about page states it is a NIDHI TBI powered by DST, and DST's programme-wise incubator list records it under that category with Mizoram University as host institute. No funding period is published on either side, so whether the support is still running cannot be told.
NIDHI TBI (DST, Government of India)· 2017
The centre states on its own about page that it is a NIDHI TBI powered by DST, and DST's own programme-wise incubator list records it as a NIDHI-TBI with Mizoram University as host institute. It says first-year sanction was received in June 2017. Neither the centre nor DST's list states a funding period, so whether that support is still running cannot be told from published pages.
How to apply to MZU Incubation Centre
Which route is yours
If you are building a business, apply for incubation through the Apply Incubatee Online form. If you are a student at Mizoram University or one of its affiliated colleges, watch for Innovia, the university's innovation challenge — the last edition took shortlisted teams through mentoring and a judged final, and entries judged viable could be put forward for incubation afterwards.
Before you fill the form
Decide which of the four thrust areas your venture sits in — agriculture and allied, manufacturing and engineering, ICT, or energy — because the form asks you to choose one before anything else. If your idea straddles two, pick the one your first product sells into and say so in the document.
The form takes a single uploaded file, in PDF or Word, so that document carries your whole case. Write it as a short business plan rather than a covering note: the problem, who has it, what you will make, where you are now, what you need from the centre, and who is on the team. The centre's own objectives are creating technology-based enterprises, moving technology out of the lab, and getting research output to market quickly, so make clear what is new in what you are doing.
Ask about the terms first
The centre does not publish how long incubation lasts, what it charges, whether it takes any stake, or how it picks applicants. Email the office on office@incubemzu.com or director@incubemzu.com, or call during office hours, and get those answers in writing before you sign anything or move in. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm; the office is closed at weekends.
What to ask about
Ask which of the listed facilities you would actually get access to and on what terms — office space, the fabrication and prototyping lab, the thrust-area lab. Ask which mentors would be matched to your sector; the empanelled list is short and public, so you can name the one you want. Ask what the centre means by seed capital funding, where it comes from and what it requires of you, because no scheme is named on the site.
Be realistic about fit
Look at who is already incubated: food and meat processing, agri inputs, livestock and dairy, soap, footwear, chemicals, textiles, design and services, most of them small Mizoram businesses. A venture of that kind is on home ground here. Something that needs deep software engineering hires or a national investor network is a harder fit, and you should ask directly how the centre would help before you apply.
If you are outside the university
You are eligible. The centre says explicitly that people not affiliated with the host university may be assisted, and it sets no other gate. Say plainly in your application that you are applying from outside, so nobody has to guess.
About MZU Incubation Centre
MZU Incubation Centre is the technology business incubator of Mizoram University, on the university campus at Tanhril in Aizawl. It works in four thrust areas — agriculture and allied, manufacturing and engineering, energy, and ICT — and it is open to founders who have no connection to the university as well as to people on campus. The centre describes itself as a NIDHI TBI powered by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and as the first of its kind hosted by a Central University in the Indian eastern region.
It grew out of the Mizoram University Innovation Club, which began operating in February 2015. In June 2016 the club sent a proposal to DST's National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board to start a technology business incubator at the university, presented it at IIM Ahmedabad in September 2016 and was told the proposal had been accepted. First-year sanction came in June 2017 and the centre was formally inaugurated on 3 July 2018 by the Governor of Mizoram.
Who can apply
The centre states that it exists to serve the entrepreneurial needs of both formal and informal institutions, and that people affiliated and not affiliated with the host university may be helped to take an idea to a working business. That is the only eligibility line the centre publishes. It sets no incorporation requirement, no district or state restriction and no category gate, so a founder in Aizawl who has never studied at Mizoram University can apply on the same terms as a research scholar on campus.
Its student competitions are a separate matter. Innovia, the Mizoram University Innovation Challenge, has been open only to students of Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges, entering alone or in teams of up to five. An earlier business idea competition, Entreprendre, was open to all MZU students. If you are not a student, the incubation route is the one to use.
How to apply
There is one route in: the Apply Incubatee Online form on the centre's site. You pick one of the four thrust areas — Agriculture & Allied, Manufacturing & Engineering, ICT or Energy — and upload your application as a PDF or Word document. There is no cohort window and no deadline, so applications appear to be taken as they come.
The centre does not publish the terms of incubation. It does not say how long incubation runs, what it costs, whether it takes equity, or how applications are assessed. The two pages that would normally carry that — the incubation plan page linked in the top menu, and the frequently asked questions page — are missing and empty respectively. Ask before you commit anything. The office answers on office@incubemzu.com and director@incubemzu.com, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
What the centre offers
The centre lists incorporation help, HR and legal support, publicity and promotion, help with technology, seed capital funding and acceleration among its services. On the knowledge side it lists mentoring, research and development with the host institute, exposure and study trips, skill-set development, and library access.
Ten mentors are empanelled, among them the chief executive of IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, a scientist heading the National Innovation Foundation's Guwahati cell for the north-east, the managing director of MIZOFED, an economic adviser at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and a mentor from the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship in Guwahati. Coaching is also run in house: a soft-skills coach from Mizoram Consultancy Group, and two design-thinking coaches who trained as junior coaches under a Training of Trainers programme run by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship with Lufthansa, and who have run design thinking camps across districts of Mizoram.
Facilities
The centre says it is housed in a building with 3D rooms and a fabrication and prototype lab. Its equipment list names a 3D scanner and two 3D printers, a laser engraver and cutting machine, a laminar air flow cabinet, an autoclave, a hot air oven and a power analyser. Alongside the workshop it lists office space, ICT support and a thrust-area lab.
Partners
Mentoring runs in partnership with IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, the section 8 company IIM Calcutta set up for entrepreneurship and innovation; the centre says DST itself recommended that arrangement. It is a partner institute of the Mizoram Entrepreneurship Development Monitoring Committee, the Government of Mizoram's nodal body for entrepreneurship development under the New Economic Development Policy. It has an institutional partnership with Zoram Mega Food Park, an initiative of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, an innovation network link with the National Innovation Foundation, and a financing link with Mizoram Rural Bank. It also lists associations with Indigram Labs in New Delhi for AgriPulse, the Europe India Innovation Network, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India on bamboo under the National Mission for Himalayan Studies, and NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore for a women's startup programme. Membership of the Indian STEP and Business Incubators Association is described as being processed rather than held; membership of UBI Global's corporate matching programme is described as received.
Scale
The home page counter says 37 incubatees. The centre's own list of incubatees names 23 entries, so the two numbers do not agree and neither is dated. The named ventures run to food processing, meat processing, agri inputs, piggery and dairy, soap, baby shoes, chemicals, textiles, design, online services and a law firm, which is a fair picture of what the centre actually backs — small manufacturing and agri businesses in Mizoram rather than software startups.
Who runs it
Day to day the centre is run by an incubation team: Er. KC Zorammuana as chief executive officer, Brian Laldinsanga as incubation manager, Ms. Lalhmingchhuangi as accounts administrator and Mr. David Vanlalpeka as support staff. Dr Laldinliana is director and coordinator. A steering committee of Mizoram University faculty drawn from management, architecture, physical and life sciences, humanities and IT sits above them, and a governing body chaired by the Vice Chancellor, with the Registrar, the Finance Officer, the chief executive, three steering committee members and representatives from DST, financial institutions, incubatees and government bodies, is the apex body.
Events and news
The centre ran Innovia, the Mizoram University Innovation Challenge, with a finale in February 2025, and before that a toys and games design competition, Pawnto Pheichham, and a business idea competition for MZU students. Its events page currently shows nothing upcoming, and the most recent news post on the site dates from February 2025.
Note on the other incubator at Mizoram University
Mizoram University also hosts a separate DBT BioNEST incubator with its own site. The two are different bodies. If your venture is life sciences or biotechnology, check which of the two you mean before you apply.
