About Bio-NEST NIPER Guwahati
Bio-NEST NIPER Guwahati is a bio-incubator at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Guwahati (NIPER-G), in Sila Katamur, Changsari, Kamrup, Assam. It is funded by BIRAC, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, under the BioNEST scheme, and is operated and managed by NIPER-Guwahati. The full name is BioNEST NIPER-Guwahati, short for North-Eastern Societal aspect for Translational Phytopharmaceutical/ Herbal Research.
Who it is for
The centre says it expects to benefit students and alumni of NIPER-G and other educational and research organisations of North East India, startup companies, and qualified citizens who want to turn ideas into products and products into business. A second focus is traditional healers of North East India, who get a platform to commercialise their products with proper scientific validation and regulatory compliance. The centre does not publish a separate application form for general incubation on its pages, so write to the team to ask how to join.
What it offers
Incubatees get laboratory space and advanced equipment for use, plus mentorship and hand-holding on the technical, legal, financial and commercial sides of technology incubation. The pages list four kinds of support. Technical advisory comes from experts at NIPER, BIRAC and collaborating institutes, with access to equipment at NIPER and other R&D organisations in the network. Legal advisory covers company formation and IPR protection and transfer, with regulatory compliance for therapeutic products. Commercial support covers pre-incubation commercial assessment, test marketing, branding and building vendor and distribution channels. Financial support means help arranging seed funds from BIRAC, NSTEDB and MSME schemes, and later investment from angel investors, NEDFi, SIDBI and NABARD.
The Ideathon
The best-documented way in is the Ideathon, a bio-innovation challenge the centre has run in several editions. Edition 4.0 took applications from 19 June 2023 to 03 July 2023, and edition 5.0 ran from 25 March 2025 to 6 April 2025. It is open to anyone regardless of qualification, affiliation, gender, location or background, and to individuals, teams, business entities or societies. Ideas must be in life sciences, nano science, health care, pharmaceutics, medical biotechnology or other biotechnology fields including food and agriculture, and must meet a market or wider societal need. It is not for basic research.
The top three ideas win prizes and six months of pre-incubation support to build a proof of concept. Winners must be willing to work physically at the centre, and sign a separate agreement with NIPER Guwahati as incubatees of Bio-NEST. The centre does not claim ownership of the intellectual property in submitted ideas. A later flyer on the site is headed Call For Incubation, but no guidelines for it were published when we checked, so confirm the current call with the team.
The BioNEST scheme
BIRAC launched Bio-NEST to build the biotech innovation ecosystem. Biotech ventures need a landing space to test ideas, run operations and use high-end instruments, and the scheme supports bio-incubators either on their own or inside academic institutions. The centre's pages state that BIRAC has supported 60 bioincubators through the scheme.
Who runs it
The centre's pages list Dr. USN Murty as Chairman, Dr. Amit Alexander as Project Coordinator, Dr. Krishna Undela as Scientific Coordinator, Mr. Ankur Adhikary as Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Bethsheba Basaiawmoit as Incubation Manager and Dr. Indrani Baruah as Technical Officer. NIPER-G describes itself as the only National Institute in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the North Eastern Region, established in 2008.
