Track record

What i-RISE — Technology Business Incubator, IISER Mohali reports about its portfolio.

i-RISE publishes no headline totals, so these counts come from counting the names on its own incubatees and mentors pages. Its INNOSTARS page separately reports that the first edition of that programme drew more than 100 applications from 12 states and 2 union territories, shortlisted 20 startups, ran 21 sessions, engaged more than 30 experts and investors, and held a demo day at IIT Delhi where the top 10 pitched.

34Startups supportedCounted from the 34 companies named on the incubatees page. i-RISE publishes no total of its own.
28Mentors on panelCounted from the mentors page: 15 business mentors and 13 technical mentors, after removing one name listed twice.

All figures computed from our data — iisermtbi.com, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at i-RISE — Technology Business Incubator, IISER Mohali, separate from the funding calls above.

The incubation programme and the seed fund route are standing. INNOSTARS and IdeaPhied are dated editions and both are currently between intakes. The site's open and closed banners contradict each other in two places, so check by email before you build an application.

The incubator's standing route: a three-week workshop, then long-term incubation on the IISER Mohali campus.

Best for: Registered science and technology companies, including start-ups with no connection to IISER Mohali

  • Idea – Early revenue
  • Nominally three years from formal approval, extendable to five, after a pre-incubation period of up to one year
  • In person
  • Takes equity
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

This is i-RISE's main programme and it runs in two phases. Phase one is a three-week workshop that trains and directs start-ups in turning an idea into a business. Teams that finish it are linked to i-RISE for long-term incubation. The incubator says registrations are open, though its home page banner contradicts that, so confirm by email before you apply.

What you get

  • Office and operational space on campus.
  • Permission to use IISER Mohali's laboratories, workshop facilities and equipment.
  • Mentoring from IISER Mohali faculty on the technical side and from an outside panel of business mentors.
  • Advice on legal and commercial IP transactions.
  • Permission to use "Incubated by IISERM" branding.
  • Help applying for grants and opportunities under partner government programmes, and introductions to investors.

Who can apply

  • Potential start-ups, existing start-ups, SMEs and investors, in new technology and new application areas.
  • You do not need to be attached to IISER Mohali. The institute's incubation policy covers both companies promoted by its own members and external start-ups promoted by people with no connection to it.
  • An external start-up has to be a registered company.

How selection works: shortlisted applicants give a screening presentation. Those who pass start phase one, then move into phase two for long-term incubation.

How to apply: download the application form and apply online, email the filled form to ceotbi@iisermohali.ac.in, or post it to CEO TBI at IISER Mohali, Knowledge City, Sector 81, SAS Nagar, Punjab 140306. A proposal by email is also accepted.

i-RISE takes applications for the central seed fund scheme and disburses it to startups it selects.

Best for: DPIIT-recognised startups incorporated within the last two years

  • Prototype – Early revenue
  • Free
  • Grant support for selected startups
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

i-RISE is one of the incubators through which the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme reaches founders, and "Apply For SISFS" sits in its main navigation. The scheme is meant to help startups prove a concept, build a prototype, run product trials, enter a market and commercialise.

What you get

  • Grant support for validating a proof of concept, prototype development or product trials.
  • Follow-on investment for market entry, commercialisation or scaling, through convertible debentures, debt or debt-linked instruments.
  • Alongside the money: co-working space, access to laboratories, mentoring, networking, and IP and legal support.

Who can apply

  • A startup recognised by DPIIT, incorporated not more than two years before it applies.
  • The business idea must have a market fit, a viable route to commercialisation and room to scale.
  • Technology must be at the core of the product, service, business model, distribution model or method.
  • The startup must not already have taken more than a modest ceiling of monetary support under any other central or state government scheme.
  • Indian promoters must hold at least 51 per cent of the shares at the time of application.

How to apply: through the Apply Now link on i-RISE's funding programme page.

Best for: Revenue-generating deep tech startups at MVP stage or beyond

  • MVP – Growth
  • 2 months
  • In person

With AngelBlue

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

INNOSTARS 2.0 was a two-month acceleration programme for early-stage deep tech startups, run by i-RISE with AngelBlue. It is between intakes: the 2025 cohort ran its application window in August, accelerated from October to the end of November, and finished with a demo day in the first week of December. The cohort was capped at fifteen startups. The page still carries both a closed and an open banner, so treat the dates as the reliable part.

The themes it covered were AI and machine learning, biotech, advanced manufacturing and advanced materials, sustainable energy and clean technologies, logistics, mobility and blockchain, electronics and communication, and supply chain.

What you get

  • Access to investors for equity, debt and grant funding through the programme's network.
  • Consulting on business planning, go-to-market and financial modelling.
  • Mentoring from industry experts, and networking with founders and investors.
  • A demo day in front of investors and industry.

Who can apply

  • Deep tech startups with a novel, technology-led idea.
  • Already generating revenue, at MVP stage or beyond.
  • A clear value proposition and evidence of market fit, a capable team, and room to scale.

How to apply: through the Apply Now link on the programme page when the next intake opens.

IdeaPhied

Competition

A student idea competition with a pre-incubation workshop, prizes and a route into incubation; the fourth edition closed in February 2026.

Best for: Student teams of two to four with an early idea

  • Idea
  • In person
  • No equity
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

IdeaPhied is i-RISE's idea competition for students. The fourth edition launched on 23 January 2026, closed registration in the second week of February, ran mentoring workshops from 16 to 18 February and held its final round at IISER Mohali on 28 February 2026. It is between editions now.

What you get

  • A place in a pre-incubation workshop.
  • Prizes and certificates for winners.
  • A route into incubation at the technology business incubator.
  • Introductions across the startup ecosystem.

Who can apply

  • Students at graduate, postgraduate, diploma, PhD or research-scholar level.
  • Teams of at least two and at most four members.
  • A pitch deck submitted by the published deadline. The page gives two slightly different closing dates, so submit by the earlier one.

How selection works: entries are judged on how original the idea is, whether it is feasible, how inventive it is, how clearly and relevantly it is pitched, and how seriously the team means to pursue entrepreneurship. Finalists get a three-minute slot, one minute to present and two for questions, with a limit of three slides.

How to apply: through the registration form on the programme page, with the deck uploaded as a pptx file.

Incubation tracks

The routes into i-RISE — Technology Business Incubator, IISER Mohali, and what each one includes.

Durations come from IISER Mohali's entrepreneurship guideline and incubation policy of 2021, which the incubator publishes. Incubation there is not equity-free.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

Some of what is on offer is the institute's, not the incubator's: the incubation policy grants an incubated company permission to use IISER Mohali's laboratories, workshops and equipment. The incubator's own space is described as office and laboratory infrastructure without a machine list.

Co-working space

Listed as part of the incubation support a seed fund startup receives.

Office space

i-RISE describes dedicated office space for incubated startups, and its home page gallery has a set of office facility photographs.

Incubator laboratory

Described only as equipped laboratory infrastructure, with a laboratory manager on the operational team and a gallery of laboratory photographs. The pages do not say what the benches are fitted for.

IISER Mohali research laboratories and equipment

Access via IISER Mohali

The institute's incubation policy gives an incubated company permission to use IISER Mohali's laboratories, workshop facilities and equipment. These belong to the institute, not to the incubator.

Support services

Help offered alongside funding and space.

Drawn from the incubator's own descriptions of what incubated companies receive and from the support listed alongside the seed fund scheme.

IP & patents

IP and legal support is listed among the incubation benefits, and the incubator advises on legal and commercial IP transactions.

Business advisory

A panel of outside business mentors alongside IISER Mohali faculty acting as technical mentors.

Technology transfer

One of its stated objectives is helping commercialise technologies developed by research institutes through the IISER platform.

Market access

Networking, industry partner introductions, and investor connects including pitching to venture funds.

Legal & finance

Help applying for grants and opportunities under partner government programmes, including the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

The Department of Science and Technology backing is stated on the incubator's own pages and corroborated by the department's incubator list. The incubator also says it operates within the Ministry of Education's National Innovation and Startup Policy initiative. Its role as a Startup India Seed Fund Scheme incubator rests on its own pages only; we could not confirm it against a public registry.

Technology Business Incubator supported by the Department of Science and Technology· 2018

The incubator says it works with support from the Department of Science and Technology, and the department's own incubator list records it as a TBI in Punjab under the registered name Society for Technology Business Incubator, Mohali, with IISER Mohali as host institute. That list classifies it as a TBI rather than a NIDHI-TBI. Neither the incubator nor the department publishes the funding period, so whether support is current cannot be told from either.

How to apply to i-RISE — Technology Business Incubator, IISER Mohali

Choosing the right route

There are effectively three doors here, and they want different things from you.

  • If you have a registered company and want space, labs and mentoring, apply to the IISER Startup Incubation Program. That is the standing route and it is open on a rolling basis.
  • If you are a DPIIT-recognised company under two years old and want seed funding, apply through the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme page instead. i-RISE is the incubator you apply through, so the scheme's rules decide your eligibility, not the incubator's.
  • If you are a student with an idea and no company, watch for IdeaPhied. It is the only route that takes teams rather than companies, and winning it can lead to incubation.

How applications work

The incubation programme takes a downloadable form. You can submit it online, email it to the CEO inbox at ceotbi@iisermohali.ac.in, or post a printed copy to CEO TBI at the campus. A proposal by email is also accepted. There is no portal to log into, so keep your own copy of what you sent and follow up by email.

Check the status banners before you spend time on a form. The site is inconsistent about whether applications are open: the home page carries a closed banner in its hero while the same page says registrations are open, and the INNOSTARS page shows a closed and an open banner together. Email the incubator and ask rather than guessing from the banner.

How selection works

For the incubation programme, shortlisted applicants give a screening presentation. Get through that and you start the three-week phase one workshop, then move into long-term incubation.

For IdeaPhied, the published judging criteria are the originality of the idea, whether it is feasible, how inventive it is, how clearly and relevantly you pitch it, and how seriously the team intends to pursue entrepreneurship. The format is tight: three slides, one minute to present and two minutes of questions, so build the pitch around one claim.

INNOSTARS looked for innovation potential in deep tech, a clear value proposition and market fit, a strong team, room to scale, revenue already coming in, and an MVP or better.

What to settle before you sign

Read IISER Mohali's entrepreneurship guideline and incubation policy first. It sets out that an incubated company allots shares to the incubator in return for support, caps the institute's holding at 9.5 per cent, and describes how faculty and student involvement is handled. It also sets the clock: nominally three years of support, up to five in some cases, with up to a year of pre-incubation before that. Ask what share is being asked of you and what it is being valued against before you commit.

Be clear about which laboratory you are being given. Some of the equipment reaches you as permission to use the institute's labs and workshops rather than as the incubator's own kit, and the terms follow the institute's rules.

About i-RISE — Technology Business Incubator, IISER Mohali

i-RISE is the technology business incubator at IISER Mohali, in Knowledge City, Sector 81, SAS Nagar, Punjab. The name stands for Raising Innovative & Sustainable Enterprises, and the incubator was set up in 2018 as TBI IISER Mohali before it was renamed. It says it works with support from the Department of Science and Technology and operates within the Ministry of Education's National Innovation and Startup Policy initiative. In the Department of Science and Technology's own list of technology business incubators, the registered entity behind it is named as the Society for Technology Business Incubator, Mohali (TBI-IISERM), with IISER Mohali as the host institute. Our own listing used to carry the host institute's name and website instead of the incubator's.

How programmes work

The main route in is the IISER Startup Incubation Program. It runs in two phases. Phase one is a three-week workshop that helps a team turn an idea into a business. Teams that finish it are then linked to i-RISE for long-term incubation. The published steps are: send the application, attend a screening presentation if you are shortlisted, start phase one, then move into phase two.

i-RISE is also the route to the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme for startups it takes on. Its funding page sets out what the scheme covers, which is proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialisation, alongside co-working space, laboratory access, mentoring, networking and IP and legal help. The scheme's own eligibility rules apply, and they are strict: your company must be recognised by DPIIT, incorporated no more than two years before you apply, and built on technology at the core of its product, service, business model, distribution model or method. Indian promoters must hold at least 51 per cent of the shares.

Two named programmes run on their own schedules and are both between intakes. INNOSTARS 2.0 was a two-month acceleration programme for deep tech startups, run with AngelBlue, with a cohort of up to fifteen and a demo day at the end. It asked for startups already generating revenue and at MVP stage or beyond, across AI and machine learning, biotech, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, green mobility, logistics, blockchain, electronics and advanced materials. IdeaPhied 4.0 is the student idea competition, which ran from January to a final round on campus in February 2026, with a pre-incubation workshop, prizes and a route into incubation at the incubator for winners.

Who can apply

You do not have to be an IISER Mohali student or staff member. IISER Mohali's entrepreneurship guideline and incubation policy of 2021 covers two kinds of venture: companies promoted by its own faculty, staff, research scholars and students, and external start-ups promoted by people with no connection to the institute. Either way the policy is written around a registered company, so an idea on its own is not enough for the incubation route. The one programme aimed squarely at people without a company is IdeaPhied, which is open to students at graduate, postgraduate, diploma, PhD and research-scholar level, in teams of two to four.

Incubation here is not equity-free. Under the same policy, an incubated company agrees to allot shares to the incubator in return for the support it receives, and the institute's total holding is capped at 9.5 per cent of the company's shares. The exact share is negotiated against the value of the help given. Support runs nominally for three years from formal approval and can be stretched to five, with a pre-incubation period of up to one year before that.

Facilities

i-RISE describes its own space as dedicated office space and equipped laboratory infrastructure, and it has a laboratory manager on its operational team. Its co-working space and laboratory access are also listed as part of what a seed fund startup gets. Separately, the institute's incubation policy gives an incubated company permission to use IISER Mohali's laboratories, workshop facilities and equipment, so a lot of the heavier equipment a science startup would want here belongs to the institute rather than to the incubator, and reaches you as access through it.

Who it backs

Its incubatees page names startups in six groups: health tech, diagnostics and medical devices; biotech and bioprocessing; agri tech, food tech and farming; IT, IoT, AI, machine learning and deep tech; waste management and sustainability; and mobility and logistics. The Department of Science and Technology's list records narrower thrust areas for the incubator, which are biotechnology covering healthcare, therapeutic and industrial biomolecules and bioenergy, and new materials and devices including nanomaterials from the chemical, physical, biological and material sciences.

Who runs it

The director of IISER Mohali, Prof. Anil K. Tripathi, chairs it. Satyendra S. Choudhary is the chief executive officer. The executive board is drawn almost entirely from the institute and includes the Dean of Research and Development as vice chairperson, the registrar, and faculty from the mathematical, physical, biological and earth and environmental sciences. Mentoring is split between a panel of business mentors from outside the institute and technical mentors who are IISER Mohali faculty.

How to apply and where to find them

There are three ways in for the incubation programme: download the application form and apply online, email the completed form to the incubator's CEO inbox, or post it to CEO TBI at the campus address. The incubator also posts its own jobs on a careers page, and it publishes the institute's entrepreneurship guideline and incubation policy and a conflict of interest policy, both worth reading before you apply.
